Pharmacy technicians (TTK or pharmacist assistants) in Indonesia: duties, STR and pay
Indonesia's pharmacy technicians (TTK) are now called vocational pharmacy workers under Law 17/2023: a diploma, a lifetime STR and work with pharmacists.
Summary
- Law 17/2023 Article 199(5) groups pharmacy workers into vocational pharmacy workers, pharmacists and specialist pharmacists; job ads still often say TTK.
- Health workers need at least a three-year diploma (Article 210), so the main route is a D3 pharmacy diploma followed by the national competency exam.
- To practise, a vocational pharmacy worker must hold an STR from the Indonesian Health Council, valid for life.
- Under Government Regulation 28/2024, prescription-only drugs, narcotics and psychotropics may be handed over only by a pharmacist on prescription.
- Government Regulation 51/2009 on pharmacy work has been revoked by Government Regulation 28/2024.

How much do pharmacy technicians earn in Indonesia?
We do not show a figure specific to pharmacy technicians, in pharmacies or hospitals, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official role-level pay scale. As a floor, PP 36/2021 says workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city.

Which education routes lead to pharmacy technician work?
The main route is a D3 pharmacy diploma, then the national competency exam at the end of the programme to obtain a competency certificate (Law 17/2023 Article 213). Pharmacy vocational school (SMK) graduates do not yet qualify as health workers because Article 210 sets a three-year diploma as the minimum; they can work as support staff (Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 428). To become a pharmacist, continue to a pharmacy degree and the professional programme.
Which workplace rights should pharmacy technicians check?
Law 17/2023 Article 273 gives health workers the right to fair pay, health and employment social security, and occupational safety protection. Employers must register their workers with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15), and Government Regulation 35/2021 requires overtime pay when you work beyond the applicable hours. Ask for a written employment agreement that states the contract type, pay and shift pattern.

What does a pharmacy technician's career path look like?
Vocational pharmacy workers usually start in pharmacy service or a pharmacy store, then can become stock or procurement coordinators. In the pharmaceutical industry and distribution, the path can lead to production, quality control, distribution warehouses or medical representative work. To become a pharmacist with full authority, continue to an S1 in pharmacy and the pharmacist professional programme; medical laboratory work is a different route.
What interview questions might you be asked for pharmacy technician jobs?
Interview questions for pharmacy technician jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Which job scams target pharmacy technicians?
The most common trick is asking for money before you are hired, for registration, training or a uniform; the Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam. The Ministry of Health has also warned about fake competency training for health workers that uses its logo. Watch too for employers who want your original diploma as a guarantee, which Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 prohibits.

Frequently asked questions
Is a TTK the same as a vocational pharmacy worker?
Under Law 17/2023, the pharmacy workforce consists of vocational pharmacy workers, pharmacists and specialist pharmacists (Article 199(5)). Job ads still often use the older terms TTK (tenaga teknis kefarmasian) or pharmacist assistant for this position. What matters is that you hold the right diploma, competency certificate and STR before you practise.
Can SMK pharmacy graduates work as pharmacy technicians?
Not as a health worker yet. Law 17/2023 Article 210(2) sets a three-year diploma as the minimum for health workers. Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 428 allows pharmacy workers to be assisted by health support staff, so SMK graduates can work in a support role while studying for a D3 pharmacy diploma.
Can a pharmacy technician hand over prescription-only drugs without a pharmacist?
No. Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 922(1) says prescription-only drugs, narcotics and psychotropics may be handed over only by a pharmacist or specialist pharmacist, on prescription, at a pharmacy service facility. If your workplace asks you to do it, record what happened and raise it with the pharmacist in charge.
Does a vocational pharmacy worker's STR need renewing?
No. Law 17/2023 Article 260(4) says the STR is valid for life unless it is suspended or revoked. If your place of practice requires an SIP, it is valid for five years and must be renewed (Article 264). According to the KKI website, registration moves to SATUSEHAT SDMK from 12 October 2026.
Can a pharmacy keep my original diploma?
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents, including competency certificates, as a guarantee for work. Hand over copies only and keep your originals.
