What do nutritionists do in Indonesia?

Nutritionists assess nutritional status, plan menus and diets, oversee food quality and safety, and teach nutrition in hospitals, community health centres, catering, the food industry and SPPG kitchens. Law 17/2023 on Health, Article 199(8), classes nutritionists and dietitians as health workers in the nutrition group. Nutritionists usually work alongside a health team or a kitchen team.

  • Assess the nutritional status of patients or target groups and record the results.
  • Plan menus and diets to nutrition standards and special needs.
  • Oversee portions, quality and food safety in the kitchen or nutrition unit.
  • Give nutrition counselling and education to patients, families or communities.
  • At an SPPG: plan menus, oversee food preparation and write programme reports.
  • Work with doctors, nurses, cooks and catering managers.

What do you need to become a nutritionist in Indonesia?

Nutritionists study nutrition, for example a D3 or bachelor's degree in nutrition. Law 17/2023 Article 260 requires health workers who practise to hold an STR, issued by the Council on the Minister's behalf once the diploma or professional certificate and competency certificate requirements are met, and valid for life. For certain types, practice also needs an SIP from the regency or city government, valid for five years.

What does a typical nutritionist job description look like?

Nutritionist vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for a D3 or bachelor's degree in nutrition, an active STR for patient care, menu planning skills, food safety knowledge and counselling ability. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any hospital, caterer or SPPG, so there is no apply button.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • A D3, D4 or bachelor's (S1) degree in nutrition, depending on the level required.
  • An active STR for patient-facing roles.
  • Knowledge of nutrition standards, food safety and menu planning.
  • Able to explain nutrition simply to patients and the public.
  • For SPPG: willing to go through official selection, including the CAT test for PPPK posts.

Skills

Nutritional assessment, Menu planning, Food safety, Nutrition counselling, Recording and reporting, Teamwork, Public communication.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a nutritionist earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a nutritionist-specific pay figure yet, for SPPG kitchens or hospitals, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample or an official pay scale. SPPG nutritionists appointed as PPPK are paid under PPPK rules, which we have not loaded yet. As a floor in the private sector, PP 36/2021 Article 24 applies the minimum wage, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city, to service under one year.

Which education routes lead to becoming a nutritionist?

The usual route is a D3 in nutrition at vocational level or a bachelor's degree in nutrition, followed by a competency certificate. Law 17/2023 Article 260(3) makes a health diploma or professional certificate plus a competency certificate the conditions for an STR. Because nutritionists and dietitians are different types of health worker, check the education level required in the post announcement or job ad.

What are working conditions and rights like for nutritionists?

Hospital nutritionists may work rotas that follow patient services, while catering and SPPG nutritionists follow the kitchen's production schedule. Contracts may be fixed-term, permanent or PPPK. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register workers with BPJS social security, and the minimum wage is the floor for workers with under one year of service.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What does a nutritionist career path look like?

Nutritionists can start as staff in a hospital nutrition unit or kitchen, then become coordinators, heads of the nutrition unit or independent nutrition consultants. Law 17/2023 distinguishes nutritionists from dietitians as two types of nutrition worker, so check the qualification required for clinical roles. In the Free Nutritious Meals programme, experience as an SPPG nutritionist prepares you for programme supervision roles.

What does a nutritionist do in an SPPG kitchen?

A nutritionist is one of three core staff in every Nutrition Fulfilment Service Unit (SPPG), alongside the SPPG head and the accountant, according to the head of the National Nutrition Agency in January 2026. Most long-serving core staff were appointed as PPPK from 1 February 2026, while newer staff wait for later tests. Volunteers are not part of the PPPK appointment scheme.

What interview questions might you be asked for nutritionist jobs?

Interview questions for nutritionist jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

Which job scams target nutritionist applicants in Indonesia?

Tricks to watch for as a nutritionist are fake SPPG recruitment and offers of a fast track into PPPK posts at the National Nutrition Agency. In January 2026 the head of the agency said SPPG core staff must pass the CAT test, so paid offers without a test are suspect. Also watch for civil-service posters with links outside official domains, which BKN says risk stealing personal data.

Where can you find safe nutritionist vacancies and how should you apply?

PPPK and civil-service posts, including those at the National Nutrition Agency, open only through the SSCASN portal and are announced on agency websites ending in go.id. For private hospitals, caterers and the food industry, look on official careers pages and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. Never pay to be hired, and do not send bank details before a written employment agreement exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian in Indonesia?

Law 17/2023 Article 199(8) names nutritionists (nutrisionis) and dietitians (dietisien) as two types of health worker in the nutrition group. Both work in nutrition, but their scope of practice and education levels are set by implementing regulations and professional standards. Before applying, match your qualification to the job title in the ad, then check your STR status with the Indonesian Health Council.

Do nutritionists in Indonesia need an STR?

Yes, if they practise. Law 17/2023 Article 260 requires every health worker who practises to hold an STR registration. The Council issues it on the Minister's behalf once the diploma or professional certificate and the competency certificate requirements are met, and it is valid for life. For certain types of health worker, practice also needs an SIP licence from the regency or city government (Article 263).

How do you become an SPPG (MBG) nutritionist?

Follow only official announcements from the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) and PPPK posts on the SSCASN portal. In January 2026 the head of BGN said SPPG core staff, meaning the head, nutritionist and accountant, must pass the CAT test to be appointed as PPPK. Never trust anyone who offers an SPPG nutritionist post for money or without a test.

Can a hospital, caterer or SPPG charge me a fee when I apply?

It should not. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process is almost certainly a scam. For government posts, the State Civil Service Agency (BKN) says official information comes only through government channels and the SSCASN portal. If you are asked to pay a registration, training or uniform fee before being hired, stop and check the vacancy on the institution's official website.

Where can nutritionists work in Indonesia?

Nutritionists work in hospitals, community health centres (puskesmas), clinics, institutional catering such as dormitories and company canteens, the food industry, schools and SPPG kitchens in the Free Nutritious Meals programme. Some also work as independent nutrition consultants or in public health programmes. Workplaces that serve patients usually ask for an active STR from day one.
