What does quality control staff do?

Quality control (QC) staff make sure raw materials and products meet specifications before they reach customers. QC staff inspect samples, measure dimensions or test product properties, record defects and set aside items that fail. In food and beverage plants, QC also monitors process hygiene and temperature records. Production teams use QC findings to fix their processes.

  • Inspect incoming raw materials before production uses them.
  • Measure and test work-in-progress and finished products against specifications.
  • Record defects and separate non-conforming products.
  • Write daily or weekly quality reports for production.
  • Help find the root cause of quality problems with the production team.
  • Keep measuring tools calibrated and logged.
  • Support internal and customer audits.

What do you need to work in quality control?

Quality control vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for an SMK, D3 or S1 qualification that matches the product, such as mechanical engineering, chemistry or food technology. Experience with measuring tools and a grasp of quality management systems help. QC ads rarely ask for a specific licence. A competency certificate from a professional certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP can strengthen your application.

What does a typical quality control job description look like?

Quality control ads usually ask for attention to detail, the ability to record results and write reports, experience with measuring tools and willingness to work rotating shifts. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns in manufacturing and food plants. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

How much does quality control staff earn in Indonesia?

Quality control staff in factories may not be paid below the minimum wage of the regency or city where they work, at least those with less than one year of service (PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24). We do not show a QC-specific figure yet because there is no verified vacancy data with a large enough sample or an official pay scale. Advertised ranges rarely state the sample size, so compare them with the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) where you work.

Which education routes lead to quality control jobs?

Common routes into quality control are an SMK or D3 in engineering, chemistry or food, then an S1 for analyst or quality supervisor roles. Kemnaker's vocational training on Skillhub is free for SMA or SMK graduates with a SIAPkerja account. D1 to S1 graduates can gain experience through Kemnaker's National Apprenticeship Programme. A competency test with a BNSP-licensed LSP helps prove your skills.

What contracts, shifts and social security apply to quality control staff?

Quality control staff in factories often work rotating shifts that follow production hours. Government Regulation 35/2021 sets a 40-hour working week, caps overtime at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, and bars probation in a fixed-term PKWT contract. Employers must register workers with BPJS (Law 24/2011, Article 15). The Government and the DPR are finalising a new labour law, so check the workers' rights pages for updates.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What is the career path in quality control?

Careful quality control staff can move up to senior QC, quality supervisor and then quality assurance manager, who designs the quality system and handles customer audits. Other paths lead to laboratory analyst, process improvement or internal audit roles. Knowledge of quality and food safety management standards, plus a competency certificate from a BNSP-licensed LSP, helps you progress.

How do QC staff, QA staff and laboratory analysts differ in a factory?

QC staff check products on the production line, while QA staff write the procedures and quality systems that prevent defects. Chemical or industrial laboratory analysts test samples of materials, products or waste water in a factory or mine laboratory, and usually come from a chemical analysis track at a vocational school (SMK) or a D3 in chemistry. Project QC in construction checks the quality of site work. Medical laboratory analysts who test patient samples are different: they are STR-licensed health workers; see our medical laboratory guide.

How do you check a quality control vacancy before applying?

  1. Find the same vacancy on the company's official website or on Kemnaker's Karirhub.
  2. Check the company's full legal name on AHU through the service below. Do not rely on a business identification number (NIB) printed in an ad, because we found no public NIB search on OSS.
  3. Make sure the recruiter's e-mail uses the company domain and that tests take place at the office or plant.
  4. Refuse any request for money, your original diploma or bank details before you sign an employment agreement.
  5. Keep the ad and messages, then check the ad with the job checker or report it through an official channel.

What interview questions might you be asked for quality control staff jobs?

Interview questions for quality control staff jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Republika (official statement via media)

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.

Questions for this field

Which machines, equipment or engineering software have you operated?

How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?

Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.

How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.

What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?

Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.

How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.

How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?

Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.

How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.

Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?

Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.

How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.

How do you take samples and record quality checks?

Why they ask: Clean quality records are the basis for improving a process.

How to answer: Explain the standard you use, how you sample, how you record results and when you escalate findings to production.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target quality control applicants?

Quality control vacancies can still be used by scammers in familiar ways: you are asked to transfer money for training, a uniform or administration, the interview happens only by chat, and the recruiter uses a free e-mail address. Kemnaker lists money requests in recruitment as a sign of a fake vacancy. It also warns about requests for an ID card photo, bank account number or selfie. Match the vacancy against the factory's official site first.

Warning signs in quality control staff job ads

  • You are asked to pay for training, a uniform or administration before being hired.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between QC and QA?

Quality control checks products: it measures, tests and separates defective items. Quality assurance designs and maintains the system, meaning work procedures, quality standards, training and audits, so defects do not happen. In small companies one person often does both. Job ads sometimes use the two terms interchangeably, so read the list of duties, not just the job title.

Do QC staff need an engineering degree?

Not always. Metal and electronics plants usually look for mechanical or electrical engineering graduates, while food and beverage plants often look for food technology, chemistry or biology graduates. For entry-level roles, many ads accept SMK graduates from a matching programme. Selection most often tests attention to detail, reading specifications and how you record inspection results.

Can a company charge me for training before hiring me?

Kemnaker lists requests for money for training, uniforms or administration before hiring as one of the signs of a fake vacancy. Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 also bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees. If you are asked to pay, stop the process, keep the evidence and check the ad with the job checker.

Do QC staff work night shifts?

In plants that run around the clock, quality control staff usually follow the production shift pattern, including nights. For women working between 23.00 and 07.00, Law 13/2003, Article 76 requires employers to provide nutritious food and drink and to protect their decency and safety at work. Ask about the shift pattern and facilities at the interview.
