What does an MBG kitchen (SPPG) worker do?

SPPG kitchen workers prepare free nutritious meals (MBG) in large volumes for students, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and toddlers. The work is usually split into receiving and preparing ingredients, helping to cook, portioning into meal trays (ompreng), delivering to schools, washing trays and equipment, and admin. According to a BGN deputy head in December 2025, cooking starts at around 01.00 to 02.00 at night, and volunteers help receive raw ingredients and wash the trays that come back from schools. Most workers are hired as MBG volunteers by the partner that runs the SPPG.

Volunteer requirements are set by the partner that runs the SPPG, because BGN says volunteers belong to the partner. One rule applies to every kitchen: Ministry of Health Circular HK.02.02/C.I/4202/2025 requires each SPPG to hold an SLHS hygiene certificate, and the application must include proof that food handlers have taken a ready-to-eat food safety course. How much do SPPG kitchen volunteers earn?

Pay comes from the partner, so ask for the amount, how it is calculated (daily or monthly) and the pay date in writing. What training helps for SPPG kitchen work?

The key training is the food safety course for food handlers. The Ministry of Health said on 25 April 2026 that food-handler training for SPPG kitchens is free and online, and that a kitchen's SLHS is not issued without trained food handlers. The national competency standard for catering (SKKNI Jasa Boga, Ministerial Decree 107/2024) includes units such as cleaning kitchen areas and equipment and food safety procedures, and the BNSP directory lists food-handler certification schemes.

What should you ask before you start in an SPPG kitchen?

Ask for the name of the partner or foundation that runs the SPPG, then get the section, shift hours, days off, pay and pay date in writing. Ask for your BPJS Ketenagakerjaan membership number, because BGN requires partners to enrol staff and volunteers under BGN Head Decree 401.1/2025. Ask too about THR, protective equipment and how heavy loads are handled, because mass kitchen work starts in the early hours.

How many SPPG kitchen jobs are there now?

SPPG kitchen jobs are being reorganised. On 27 July 2026 BGN stopped 833 kitchens that breached its procedures and said kitchens closed for violations are not paid. BGN set a final deadline of 10 August 2026 for kitchens to obtain an SLHS hygiene certificate, and on 16 September 2026 it suspended another 1,276 SPPG without one. Since August 2026 the government has also prioritised MBG in underdeveloped, frontier and outermost (3T) regions and for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and toddlers.

According to the Coordinating Minister for Food on 14 August 2026, new SPPG are prioritised in 3T regions and areas with high stunting rates. Older figures need their dates: as of February 2026 a BGN official said 897,777 new jobs had been created in SPPG kitchens, with 21,897 SPPG operating on 12 February 2026, and as of December 2025 BGN said each SPPG employs 47 local residents.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

No. On 27 February 2026 BGN said all official government selection is free of charge, and anyone asking for money in BGN's name is not part of the official process.
