Content creators in Indonesia: duties, skills, income and working safely

Content creators make videos, photos and posts for brands or their own accounts; no licence is needed. Brand deals that ask for a deposit are scams.

Summary

High scam risk
  • Content creators work either as staff for brands and agencies or independently on their own accounts, paid through platform programmes, brand deals and affiliate commissions.
  • No professional licence is required. SKKNI Pemasaran (Ministerial Decree 124/2022) includes units on preparing digital content and managing social media.
  • Genuine brands pay creators, not the other way round: a deal that asks for a deposit or joining fee is a scam sign.
  • Under Law 28/2014 Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, copyright in commissioned content belongs to its maker, so set usage rights and duration in the contract.
  • According to Indonesia's tax office (DJP), content creators are self-employed taxpayers who must register, calculate, pay and report tax in the annual return.

What does a content creator do in Indonesia?

A content creator (kreator konten, sometimes written konten kreator) plans, makes and publishes content such as short videos, photos or posts for a brand or their own account, then reads audience data to improve the next piece. The Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI Pemasaran standard includes units on preparing digital content and managing social media, which describe the core of the work. Creators can be staff at a brand or agency, or work independently.

  • Develop ideas and write content concepts or scripts that fit the brand's or the account's goals.
  • Film, photograph or write content, then edit it for each platform.
  • Publish content on schedule and within each platform's community rules.
  • Reply to comments and messages politely, and screen out suspicious messages.
  • Read reach and engagement data to improve the next piece of content.
  • Work with marketing teams, designers or video editors.
  • Label paid content clearly and follow the collaboration brief.

What do you need to become a content creator in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required to be a content creator, and we found no SKKNI standard specific to content creators on the SKKNI portal on 7 October 2026. As references, SKKNI Pemasaran (Ministerial Decree 124/2022) and SKKNI Periklanan (Ministerial Decree 101/2023) include units on digital and advertising content. Employers usually judge your portfolio, platform knowledge and filming and editing skills.

What does a typical content creator job description look like?

Content creator vacancies at Indonesian companies usually ask for a content portfolio, an understanding of platform trends, the ability to film and edit with a phone or camera, and for some roles willingness to appear on camera. Some ads mention a weekly posting target. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

General example, not a vacancy

Commonly requested requirements

  • A portfolio of content: videos, photos or writing you made yourself.
  • Understanding of formats and trends on the platforms the brand uses.
  • Able to film and edit simple content with a phone or camera.
  • Able to write clear captions that match the brand's voice.
  • A high school, vocational school (SMK), diploma or degree in communication, design or marketing helps.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a content creator earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a content creator pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. For employees with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the local minimum wage. Independent creators' income varies widely and depends on platform programmes, brand deals and affiliate commissions, so we publish no average.

Which education routes lead to content creation?

Content creation does not require a specific degree. Many creators start from a multimedia vocational school (SMK), a diploma or degree in communication, design or marketing, or teach themselves while building a portfolio. Government vocational training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site says is free for participants. Avoid paid courses that promise followers or brand contracts after you finish.

How do content creators, influencers and social media specialists differ?

A content creator focuses on making content, for a brand or for their own account. An influencer is paid mainly for their influence on followers, through endorsements or brand ambassador roles. A social media specialist is usually an employee who runs a brand's accounts: scheduling, community, ads and reports. One person can do all three. Each role has its own KarirAman guide, including different scam risks.

What should a content creator collaboration contract include?

A creator collaboration contract should state the number and type of content pieces, deadlines, revisions, the fee and payment schedule, how long and where the brand may use the content, exclusivity, and how paid content will be labelled. Under Law 28/2014 Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, copyright in commissioned content belongs to its maker, so any transfer or licence must be in writing. If other people appear in your content, get their permission.

Do content creators in Indonesia have to pay tax?

Yes. According to the tax office (DJP), content creators, including influencers, are individual taxpayers doing self-employed work who must register for a tax number (NPWP), calculate, pay and report tax in the annual return; the national ID number (NIK) works as the NPWP once linked. Government Regulation 20/2026 confirms that self-employed income, including online content creation, is outside the final small-business tax scheme. Eligible creators may use the deemed-profit norm (NPPN).

Where does a content creator's income come from?

An independent creator's income usually comes from several sources at once, and none is guaranteed every month:

  • Platform programmes. For example the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), which YouTubers, including VTubers, use to share in ad revenue. As of 8 October 2026, YouTube's help page says a channel qualifies with 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. The channel must also follow the monetisation policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on two-step verification, link an AdSense account and pass review. Other platforms, including Facebook's professional mode (often called FB Pro), set their own rules, which can change, so always check the official page and never pay a service that promises monetisation.
  • Brand deals (endorsements, sponsored content, brand ambassador roles). A brand pays for content that features its product. YouTube requires creators to tick the paid promotion disclosure, and TikTok's Branded Content Policy requires the disclosure toggle for free products, paid posts and brand ambassador relationships. Etika Pariwara Indonesia, the advertising industry's self-regulatory code, also asks for the advertising element to be stated clearly on personal social media.
  • Affiliate commissions. You earn a commission on sales through your link or promo code. TikTok counts affiliate commissions as branded content that must be disclosed.
  • Content production services (UGC). You make content for the brand to post on its own account, not yours.

KarirAman publishes no average creator income, because no data meets our standard. To see how fees, commissions and costs add up, look at CariTalent worked examples of creator income; the figures there are invented worked examples, not market rates.

How do you check a brand deal before accepting it?

Before you accept an offer, run these checks:

  1. Contact the brand through its official channels. Match the email address and the representative's name with the brand's official website or account. YouTube advises verifying sponsor emails by calling the company on a publicly listed number.
  2. Never pay. A deposit, joining fee, curation fee or a requirement to buy products first is a red flag.
  3. Never log in through a link in a message. Do not share your password or verification code with anyone.
  4. Ask for a written contract. Cover the content, deadlines, revisions, fee, payment schedule, usage rights and how the ad will be disclosed. As a starting point there are CariTalent free UGC creator agreement templates (not lawyer-reviewed); read them carefully and adapt them.
  5. Check the agency. If the offer comes through an agency, confirm that it really represents the brand. CariTalent talent-management agencies lists some agencies with official sources, but a listing is not a guarantee.
  6. Check the business you are promoting. In June 2026 Jakarta police questioned nine influencers as witnesses in an alleged umrah travel fraud case involving a business they had promoted. Check the business licence and the product's reputation before accepting payment.

Where can creators be found by brands without paying?

You do not need to pay anyone to be seen by brands. CariTalent, a free directory of Indonesian talent and creators by Kode Nirlaba is a directory of talent and creators whose operator says all of its services are free, including registration. Its learning guides are free too, from your first piece of content to preparing a media kit: see the CariTalent creator guides. Turn down "guaranteed endorsement" offers or paid packages that promise brand contracts.

What interview questions might you be asked for content creator jobs?

Interview questions for content creator jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Can you walk me through your portfolio and your role in each piece?

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.

How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.

How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.

How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.

How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?

Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

How do you follow trends without breaking copyright or platform rules?

Why they ask: Copyright or platform breaches can get accounts blocked.

How to answer: Explain that you use your own or licensed material, give credit and check platform rules before posting.

How do you juggle several projects with different deadlines?

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.

How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.

Which limits on the work do you want agreed in writing?

Why they ask: A written agreement protects you and the employer from misunderstandings.

How to answer: Name the type of content, hours, the basis of payment, usage rights to your photos or videos and anything you will not do. Refuse requests that make you uncomfortable, including closed-door shoots without a companion.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

Republika (official statement via media)Kompas TV (official statement via media)detikFinance

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which scams target content creators in Indonesia?

A common trick aimed at content creators is a brand deal or agency offer that asks for a deposit, joining fee or product purchase, although the Ministry of Manpower says recruitment fees are almost certainly a scam. Fake collaboration or copyright-violation messages also lure you into logging in through fake links; YouTube says it never asks for your password. Buying followers breaks platform rules and can get your account restricted.

Where can you find safe content creator vacancies?

Look for content creator vacancies on the official careers pages of brands, agencies or media companies, and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. For independent collaborations, contact the brand through its official account or website, ask for a written brief and contract, and make sure payment comes from an account in the company's name. Never pay to get a project. KarirAman does not list verified content creator vacancies yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brand or agency ask for a deposit before a collaboration?

No. In a genuine deal the brand or agency pays you for content; it does not bill you. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam, and OJK notes that scammers often pose as big companies and ask for upfront payment. Refuse deposits, registration or curation fees, or any requirement to buy products first.

I got a collaboration link or a copyright-violation notice by DM. What should I do?

Do not log in through a link in that message. YouTube advises verifying sponsor or partnership emails by calling the company on a publicly listed number, and says YouTube never asks for your password or account details by email, message or phone. Check any violation notice inside the official app, turn on two-step verification and never share an OTP code with anyone.

Does buying followers help you get brand deals?

No, and it can harm your account. Meta's Community Standards for Facebook and Instagram ban buying, selling or exchanging engagement such as likes, follows and views, and TikTok's Community Guidelines ban buying or selling followers or engagement. TikTok says it removes fake followers and likes and may restrict or ban accounts that break the rules.

Do you need a big following to apply for a content creator job at a company?

Not always. Salaried content creator roles are usually judged on your portfolio: videos or posts you made, content ideas and your ability to read the data. An active personal account can help, but what counts is your ability to make content for the brand, not your follower count.

Can independent content creators join BPJS Ketenagakerjaan?

Yes. Law 24/2011 Article 16 asks anyone other than employers, wage-earning workers and contribution-assistance recipients who meets the criteria to register themselves with the social security programmes. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has a non-wage-earner category for self-employed people. If you are an employee, your employer must register you.

Is income from brand deals and platform programmes taxable?

Yes. The Income Tax Law Article 4(1), as amended by Law 7/2021, defines income to include benefits in kind, so brand-deal pay in cash or goods is income in principle. The tax office treats content creators as self-employed, and Government Regulation 20/2026 confirms that self-employed income, including online content creation, is outside the final small-business tax scheme. Ask your tax office for details.
