Affiliate marketers in Indonesia: how commission works, requirements, tax and scams

Affiliate marketers promote products through links and earn commission, with no fixed salary. A deposit or activation fee to release commission is a scam.

Summary

High scam risk
  • Affiliate marketers share product links or codes and earn commission when someone buys through them; there is no fixed salary and income is uncertain.
  • Affiliate commission flows from the platform or seller to you. An offer that asks for a deposit, a package purchase or new recruits before you can cash out is a scam sign.
  • According to Indonesia's tax office (DJP), affiliate income is self-employment income taxed at progressive rates and reported in the annual tax return.
  • Government Regulation 20/2026 confirms that self-employment income, including from online content and from finding customers as an intermediary, is outside the final SME tax.
  • OJK's illegal-activity task force has shut down entities that used marketing companies' names to offer paid tasks with deposits and member recruitment.

What is an affiliator, and what does an affiliate marketer do in Indonesia?

An affiliate marketer promotes a seller's or brand's products through content and shares an affiliate link or code. Indonesia's tax office (DJP) explains that affiliate marketers earn commission when a product sells through their affiliate link. Day-to-day work covers choosing products, making videos or reviews, adding links to content, live streams or the profile, and reading click and sales reports to improve the next piece of content.

  • Choose products that suit the audience and check the seller's reputation and the product's registration.
  • Make short videos, reviews, photos or live streams that show the product.
  • Add affiliate links or codes to content, shopping carts or the profile.
  • Label affiliate content as commercial content under each platform's rules.
  • Read click, order and commission reports to improve the next piece of content.
  • Record monthly commission and tax withholding slips for the annual tax return.
  • Answer buyers' questions without promising anything beyond the product description.

What do you need to become an affiliate marketer?

Affiliate marketing is not a licensed profession. Each affiliate programme sets its own conditions, usually an active account in good standing with the community guidelines, verified identity and a bank account in your own name; other conditions, such as age or follower count, may apply. According to a 2024 DJP news item, one marketplace then required a national ID number (NIK) validated as a tax number to withdraw commission. Conditions change, so check the platform's official help centre.

What does a typical affiliate marketing job description look like?

Most affiliate marketers work independently on their own accounts. There are also salaried roles, such as affiliate staff or coordinators at online shops and brands, who recruit and support creators, send product samples and track sales through affiliate links. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advert patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • An active social media account in good standing with the platform's community guidelines.
  • Able to make simple content on a phone and write honest captions.
  • Verified identity and a bank account in your own name for commission payouts.
  • For salaried affiliate roles, adverts usually ask for experience managing creators or online shops.
  • High school, vocational school (SMK) or higher education helps for salaried roles.

How much do affiliate marketers earn in Indonesia?

Affiliate marketers earn commission, not a salary, and the amount depends on sales, product category and programme rules. KarirAman publishes no average because no data meets our standard. If you are employed in a salaried affiliate role, Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24 bar pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service, except at micro and small businesses, which set pay by agreement (Article 36). Be wary of promises of guaranteed income.

How do you learn to become an affiliate marketer?

Affiliate marketing needs no degree. The skills that matter are making content, understanding products and reading sales data. As a reference, the SKKNI Pemasaran standard (Ministerial Decree 124/2022) includes units on using social media and online tools and preparing digital content, and BNSP's directory lists certification bodies with digital marketing schemes. Government vocational training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which says on its official site that it is free.

How is an affiliate marketer different from an influencer or content creator?

Influencers are usually paid a fixed fee for an endorsement agreed in the contract up front, while affiliate marketers earn commission only when a sale or other result comes through their link; an article on the DJP website explains the same difference. Content creators focus on making content for brands or their own accounts. One person can do all three, and each role has its own KarirAman guide.

Is affiliate commission taxed in Indonesia?

Yes. According to DJP, affiliate commission is self-employment income: net income minus the non-taxable allowance (PTKP) is taxed at the progressive rates of Income Tax Law Article 17 and reported in the annual tax return by 31 March. A 2024 DJP news item also says one marketplace usually withholds tax on each commission automatically as income tax Article 21 (PPh 21). Government Regulation 20/2026 confirms self-employment income is outside the final small-business tax.

Must affiliate content be labelled as advertising?

Yes, under platform rules. TikTok's Branded Content Policy, in the version effective 31 August 2026, treats content that earns commission through affiliate links or promo codes as branded content, and creators must switch on the commercial content disclosure setting. Check for similar rules on every platform you use. The general rules on ad labels, including the advertising code of ethics, are covered in our influencer guide.

How does affiliate commission work?

An affiliate programme connects three parties: the seller or brand that owns the product, the platform that records the transaction, and the affiliate marketer who promotes it. The usual flow looks like this:

  1. You sign up for the affiliate programme through the platform's official app or website.
  2. You choose a product and get a link or code tied to your account.
  3. A buyer clicks the link and completes a purchase. The platform's system records that the order came from you.
  4. Once the order is completed under the programme's rules, the commission is credited to your affiliate account and can be paid out to a bank account in your name.

According to an article on the DJP website, most affiliate programmes on Indonesian marketplaces pay commission per sale, with a percentage and a commission cap set by each platform. Some schemes pay per click or per impression instead. Rules on cancellations, returns and payout schedules differ between programmes, so read the conditions in the official help centre before you start making content.

For worked examples of how fees and commission add up, see CariTalent worked examples of creator income; the figures there are illustrations, not market rates. Always check tax questions against DJP's own guidance.

How do you check an affiliate agency or community before joining?

Many "affiliate job" offers arrive by DM, group chat or social media ad. Before you join, check these points:

  1. Who pays whom? In a genuine programme, you are the one being paid. A request for a deposit, a compulsory class fee, an activation fee or a package purchase is a warning sign.
  2. Where does the commission come from? If the profit comes from recruiting new members rather than selling products to consumers, the pattern looks like a pyramid scheme, which Law 7/2014 Article 9 bans.
  3. Where do you sign up? Platform affiliate programmes are joined in the platform's own official app or website, not through short links or APK files sent in a chat.
  4. What are they asking for? Never share your OTP code, PIN, password, or access to your social media and e-wallet accounts.
  5. Is a company's name being misused? Satgas PASTI has shut down an entity that used an international advertising agency's name to offer part-time work with deposits. Match the name and website address against the company's official channels.

What should you do if you have already transferred money?

Stop any further transfers at once, even if the scammer promises your money back after one more mission. According to OJK's Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC), you should do two things at the same time: report to IASC for help with the funds and blocking the account, and file a police report for the legal process. Collect transfer receipts, your account details and the receiving account's details, and screenshots of the chats. IASC also says recovery is not guaranteed and depends on how quickly you report. KarirAman's guide on what to do after you have already paid has the full steps.

What interview questions might you be asked for affiliate marketer jobs?

Interview questions for affiliate marketer jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Can you walk me through your portfolio and your role in each piece?

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.

How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.

How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.

How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.

How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?

Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

How do you follow trends without breaking copyright or platform rules?

Why they ask: Copyright or platform breaches can get accounts blocked.

How to answer: Explain that you use your own or licensed material, give credit and check platform rules before posting.

How do you juggle several projects with different deadlines?

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.

How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.

Which limits on the work do you want agreed in writing?

Why they ask: A written agreement protects you and the employer from misunderstandings.

How to answer: Name the type of content, hours, the basis of payment, usage rights to your photos or videos and anything you will not do. Refuse requests that make you uncomfortable, including closed-door shoots without a companion.

How do you keep a live stream or promotion engaging without exaggerated product claims?

Why they ask: False claims harm buyers and can break platform rules.

How to answer: Explain learning the product, sharing only information from the official seller and interacting with viewers honestly.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What scams use the name of affiliate programmes?

One scam to watch for is an invitation to join an affiliate scheme that asks for a deposit, a package purchase or new recruits before commission can be paid. On 16 July 2025 OJK's Satgas PASTI shut down activities that used a global marketing company's name with deposits, rating tasks and tiered member recruitment. There are also like, review or buy-a-product tasks that pay a little at first, then demand bigger deposits.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to pay to become an affiliate marketer?

No. In a genuine affiliate programme, commission flows from the platform or seller to you, not the other way round. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam, and OJK's illegal-activity task force (Satgas PASTI) has shut down part-time work schemes that required deposits. If you are asked to pay a deposit, buy a package or buy an account to join an affiliate programme, stop.

How can you spot a fake affiliate agency?

Be wary of agencies that charge a joining fee or a compulsory class, promise guaranteed commission, talk only through group chats, or ask for your OTP code or account password. In July 2025 Satgas PASTI reported that an entity using the name of a global marketing company ran apps not registered as electronic system operators (PSE), required deposits and paid commission through tiered member recruitment.

Are like, review or buy-a-product tasks to boost sales a form of affiliate work?

No. That is a task scam. According to Satgas PASTI, victims are first paid a small amount for liking or subscribing, then asked to deposit money for the next mission until the scammer disappears. A job platform's statement reported by detikFinance also describes shopping tasks from a pre-funded account, after which the victim is asked to fund a bigger task.

Can affiliate marketers join BPJS Ketenagakerjaan?

Yes. Law 24/2011 Article 16 requires anyone other than employers, workers and contribution-assistance recipients who meets the membership criteria to register themselves and their family members with BPJS. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has a non-wage-earner (BPU) category for self-employed people, including affiliate marketers who are not employees.

Can you promote any product as an affiliate?

Not every product. Check the product and the seller first, because the affiliate link is recorded under your account. For cosmetics, check the product's registration on the BPOM product lookup. Law 8/1999 Article 17 bans misleading advertising, and Law 7/2014 Article 9 bans pyramid schemes in the distribution of goods. Our influencer guide covers an example of the legal risk for people who promote a problematic service.

What is the difference between an affiliate marketer, a reseller and a dropshipper?

An affiliate marketer does not buy or stock goods; they earn commission when a product sells through their link. A reseller buys goods and resells them at their own price, and a dropshipper sells without holding stock because the supplier ships to the buyer. Be wary of offers that make you buy a reseller package first or promise bonuses mainly for recruiting new members: Trade Law 7/2014 Article 9 bars distributors from running pyramid schemes.
