Influencers and KOLs in Indonesia: brand deals, rate cards, contracts, tax and scams

Influencers are paid for their reach through endorsements and brand deals, with no official rate. Deals that ask for a deposit or purchase first are scams.

Summary

High scam risk
  • Influencers or KOLs are paid by brands for their influence on followers, through endorsements, sponsored content, affiliate links or brand ambassador contracts.
  • Indonesia has no official endorsement rates; prices depend on format, production, revisions, how long the post stays up, ad rights and exclusivity.
  • We found no law that specifically requires an #ad label; the duty to label comes from the Indonesian advertising ethics code (EPI) and platform rules.
  • According to the tax office (DJP), influencers are self-employed taxpayers, and payment in goods is in principle income under the Income Tax Law.
  • Genuine brands pay influencers, not the other way round: an offer that asks for a deposit or joining fee is a scam sign.

What does an influencer do in Indonesia?

An influencer, often called a KOL or selebgram, makes content that presents a brand's products or services to their followers, through one-off endorsements, sponsored content packages, affiliate links or long-term brand ambassador contracts. Brands pay for the influence and trust of the audience, not only for the content. TikTok's Branded Content Policy counts free products, paid posts, affiliate commissions and brand ambassador relationships as branded content.

  • Make content that features a brand's product or service according to the collaboration brief.
  • Label paid content with the platform's disclosure tools and a clear label.
  • Keep followers' trust through regular content and replies to comments.
  • Prepare a media kit and rate card with account profile, formats and dated prices.
  • Negotiate scope, fees, revisions and content usage rights with brands or agencies.
  • Report campaign results, such as reach and engagement, to the brand.
  • Check that the brand and product are legitimate before accepting a deal.

What do you need to become an influencer in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required to be an influencer. Brands and agencies usually look at your niche, how genuine your followers are, your engagement and your track record. Common tiers are nano, micro, macro and mega, but the follower thresholds differ between agencies and are not officially defined. Your followers' trust and your compliance with ad-labelling rules matter more than the label.

What does a typical influencer brief look like?

An influencer collaboration brief in Indonesia usually states the number and format of posts, the brand's key message, the posting schedule, any restrictions, how to label the ad and how to report results. Some brands also hire KOLs as employees or brand ambassadors on fixed contracts. We wrote the description below ourselves from common offer patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • An active social media account with real followers and consistent engagement.
  • A clear content niche, for example beauty, food, technology or finance.
  • A portfolio of past collaborations or sample sponsored content.
  • Able to make content yourself or work with a production team.
  • Understanding of platform ad-labelling rules and advertising ethics.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)

How much do influencers earn in Indonesia?

We do not show an influencer pay figure, because no data meets our standard and Indonesia has no official endorsement rates. Prices usually depend on format, production costs, revisions, how long the post stays up, ad rights and exclusivity. Public rate cards often use old data, so check the date and source. If you are an employee with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the minimum wage.

Which education routes lead to influencer work?

Influencer work does not require a specific degree. Studying communication, marketing or design helps, but expertise in a niche, content skills and an understanding of advertising ethics matter most. Learn each platform's ad-labelling rules and the Indonesian advertising ethics code (Etika Pariwara Indonesia). Avoid paid classes that promise followers or brand contracts after you finish.

Must sponsored posts be labelled as ads in Indonesia?

We found no law that specifically requires an #iklan or #ad label as of 7 October 2026. Etika Pariwara Indonesia point 4.6.11, the advertising industry's self-regulatory code, bars using personal social media for commercial ads without clearly stating the advertising element. TikTok and YouTube require their disclosure tools, and Law 8/1999 Article 17 bans misleading advertising. For cosmetics, BPOM Regulation 18/2024 also applies.

Is endorsement income taxable in Indonesia?

Yes. The Income Tax Law Article 4(1), as amended by Law 7/2021, defines income to include benefits in kind, so payment in goods is in principle income too. According to the tax office (DJP), influencers are self-employed taxpayers who must register, calculate, pay and report tax. Government Regulation 20/2026 confirms that self-employed income, including influencer work, is outside the final small-business tax scheme.

How do you read and build a rate card?

There are no official endorsement rates. A rate card is a price list you set yourself, ideally dated and stating what is included: content format, number of revisions, how long the post stays up, whether the brand may use the content in paid ads, and exclusivity. Rate cards shown as public benchmarks are often based on old data, so treat them as a rough picture, not today's market price. To build your own media kit and rate card, try the CariTalent free media kit and rate card builder; its calculator results are not market rates. Do not inflate your rate card by buying followers: it breaks platform rules.

What should an endorsement contract include?

An endorsement contract should state the number and format of posts, deadlines, revisions, the fee and payment schedule, how the ad will be labelled, how long and where the brand may use the content, exclusivity, and what happens if the campaign is cancelled. Under Law 28/2014 Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, copyright in commissioned content belongs to its maker, so any transfer or licence to the brand must be in writing. As a starting point there are CariTalent free endorsement agreement templates (not lawyer-reviewed); they have not been reviewed by a lawyer, so read them carefully and get legal advice for large contracts.

How do you check an offer and an agency?

  1. Match the representative's name and email address with the brand's official website or account. YouTube advises calling the company on a publicly listed number to verify sponsor emails.
  2. Never pay a deposit, joining fee or buy products as a condition of a deal.
  3. Never log in through a link in a message, and never share your password or verification code.
  4. Check that the business and the product are legitimate. For cosmetics, ask for the BPOM notification number.
  5. If an agency is involved, confirm that it really represents the brand, and read the agency's commission in the contract. CariTalent talent-management agencies lists some agencies with official sources, but a listing is not a guarantee.

How do new influencers get their first deal?

Start from a niche you know, publish consistently and prepare an honest media kit. Free step-by-step guides are in the CariTalent creator guides. To be found by brands without paying, you can appear in CariTalent, a free directory of Indonesian talent and creators by Kode Nirlaba, a talent directory whose operator says all its services are free, including registration. What interview questions might you be asked for influencer jobs?

Interview questions for influencer jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Can you walk me through your portfolio and your role in each piece?

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.

How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.

How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.

How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.

How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?

Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

How do you follow trends without breaking copyright or platform rules?

Why they ask: Copyright or platform breaches can get accounts blocked.

How to answer: Explain that you use your own or licensed material, give credit and check platform rules before posting.

How do you juggle several projects with different deadlines?

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.

How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.

Which limits on the work do you want agreed in writing?

Why they ask: A written agreement protects you and the employer from misunderstandings.

How to answer: Name the type of content, hours, the basis of payment, usage rights to your photos or videos and anything you will not do. Refuse requests that make you uncomfortable, including closed-door shoots without a companion.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which scams target influencers in Indonesia?

A common trick aimed at influencers is an endorsement or agency offer that asks for a deposit, joining fee or product purchase, although the Ministry of Manpower says recruitment fees are almost certainly a scam. Fake collaboration messages also lure you into logging in through links so scammers can take over your account. Another risk is being paid to promote a fraudulent business and then being questioned by police.

Where can you find safe influencer collaborations?

Look for collaborations through brands' official channels, agencies you can check, or brand ambassador vacancies on company careers pages and the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. Ask for a written contract and make sure payment comes from an account in the company's name. To be found by brands without paying, you can appear in a free talent directory. KarirAman does not list verified influencer vacancies yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official rule that endorsements must carry an #ad label in Indonesia?

We found no law or government regulation that specifically requires an #iklan or #ad label. Etika Pariwara Indonesia, the advertising industry's self-regulatory code, asks for the advertising element to be stated clearly on personal social media, and TikTok and YouTube require their disclosure tools. Law 8/1999 Article 17 also bans misleading advertising. Label clearly.

Can I endorse cosmetics that are not registered with BPOM?

Do not. BPOM Regulation 18/2024 says only notified cosmetics may be promoted or advertised, the content must match the notification data, and social media counts as an advertising medium. It also bars testimonials that represent other people. Ask the brand for the notification number and check it yourself on BPOM's site before you accept.

Is an endorsement paid in products taxable?

In principle, yes. The Income Tax Law Article 4(1), as amended by Law 7/2021, defines income to include benefits in kind. The tax office treats influencers as self-employed people who must register, calculate, pay and report tax. Keep a record of every payment, in cash or goods, and ask your tax office how to calculate it.

Can an agency charge a registration fee before giving me endorsement deals?

That is not normal. The Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam, and OJK notes that scammers often pose as big companies and ask for upfront payment. A genuine agency usually takes a commission from the brand's payment under a written contract rather than billing you upfront. Refuse registration fees, curation fees or guaranteed endorsement packages.

What is the risk of endorsing a business that turns out to be fraudulent?

You can be questioned by police. In June 2026 Jakarta police questioned nine influencers as witnesses in an alleged umrah travel fraud case involving a business they promoted, some of them paid with umrah trips and pocket money. Before accepting a deal, check the brand's business licence, the product's distribution permit where relevant, and customer reviews.

Does buying followers raise endorsement fees?

No, and it is risky. Meta's Community Standards for Facebook and Instagram ban buying or selling engagement such as likes, follows and views, and TikTok's Community Guidelines ban buying or selling followers. TikTok says it removes fake followers and likes and may restrict or ban accounts that break the rules.
