What does a makeup artist do in Indonesia?
A makeup artist (MUA) does a client's makeup to suit the event and concept, such as a wedding, graduation or photo shoot, from consultation and skin preparation to applying makeup and touching it up before the event or shoot. The Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI Kecantikan standard sets out units for everyday, photographic, stage and character makeup. MUAs work freelance by visiting clients, in salons, in photo studios or with event production teams.
- Consult clients on the makeup concept, the event, the outfit and their skin.
- Prepare the skin, then apply makeup to the concept: everyday, graduation, photo shoot, stage or bridal.
- Style hair or a simple updo when it is part of the package.
- Clean and sanitise brushes, sponges and tools before and after use.
- Check cosmetics: BPOM notification number, expiry date and storage.
- Manage bookings, deposits and travel to the client's location.
- Photograph finished work for the portfolio with the client's permission.
How do you become a makeup artist in Indonesia, and do you need a certificate?
No professional licence is required to work as a makeup artist. Clients and salons usually judge your portfolio, technique and hygiene. As competency references, the Ministry of Manpower has SKKNI Kecantikan (No. 180 of 2021) and SKKNI Rias Pengantin Modern Nusantara (No. 194 of 2015), both listed as in force on the SKKNI portal on 7 October 2026. A competency certificate is voluntary and issued by a BNSP-licensed LSP.
What does a typical makeup artist job description look like?
Makeup artist vacancies at salons, bridal boutiques or studios in Indonesia usually ask for a portfolio, experience with different skin types, an understanding of tool hygiene and willingness to work early mornings and weekends. Some also ask for hair or hijab styling. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any business, so there is no apply button.

How much does a makeup artist earn in Indonesia?
We do not show an income figure for makeup artists yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. If you are a salon employee with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the local minimum wage. Freelance MUAs set their own rates; we explain what goes into them below.

Which education routes lead to makeup artistry?
Makeup artistry does not require a degree. Common routes are a beauty programme at a vocational high school (SMK), a course at a private training institute, or government vocational training. The Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub lists beauty (tata kecantikan) training, and its official site says the training is free for participants. For formal proof of competence, take a test at an LSP with an active licence in the BNSP directory.

- BLK and BPVP: free government job training in Indonesia and how to register on Skillhub
- LPK training institutes in Indonesia: choosing a licensed one and spotting warning signs

How do freelance makeup artists set rates without losing money?
Freelance makeup artists should build their rate from real costs, not copy other people's prices. Costs include consumable cosmetics, single-use tools, transport, preparation and travel time, the number of people made up, an assistant, and a surcharge for early starts. SKKNI Rias Pengantin Modern Nusantara even includes a unit on costing bridal packages. Put the rate, deposit and cancellation rules in writing.
What is makeup work like during wedding season?
Makeup artists usually get many bookings in the months couples prefer for weddings and fewer in other months, so freelance income is uneven across the year. On busy days work can start before dawn, with several clients in different places. Manage your capacity, never double-book the same time slot, set aside part of your income for quiet months, and register for social security.
What does a makeup artist's career path look like?
Makeup artists usually start as an assistant MUA or a salon makeup artist, then build their own name through a portfolio and client reviews. From there the path can lead to bridal makeup, makeup for advertising, film or television, teaching courses, or running a makeup business with a team. A competency certificate, a network of photographers and wedding vendors, and a reputation for hygiene help you move up.
What should you agree with a client before the event?
SKKNI Rias Pengantin Modern Nusantara treats "agreeing the bride's requests" and "consulting on the bride's condition" as competency units in their own right, because many problems come from things never agreed. Before you accept a deposit, write down: the date, start time and address; how many people you will make up; the makeup concept and whether hair or hijab styling is included; the rate, deposit and balance; cancellation and rescheduling rules; any allergies or skin problems; and permission to use photos for promotion. A written message is better than a verbal promise.
How can you market makeup services safely?
An honest portfolio, meaning photos of your own work used with the client's permission, is your main promotional tool. Many MUAs also make makeup content on social media; if you want to take that seriously, see our guide to content creators. For skin and hair services, our beauty therapist and hairdresser guides can help. If your business grows and needs a business licence, Panduan Warga guide to NIB on OSS explains how.
For creative career references, explore The Cast Index profiles of makeup artists, stylists and photographers. Use the profiles to develop ideas, then show your own makeup work in your portfolio. For photo shoots, compare the role of a fashion stylist, whose focus is clothing and accessories.
What interview questions might you be asked for makeup artist jobs?
Interview questions for makeup artist jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.
How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.
How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?
Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

Why did you apply to this company?
Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
-
Why are you interested in this role?
Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
-
What are your strengths?
Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
-
How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?
Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
-
How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?
Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
-
When can you start?
Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
-
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.
What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which scams target makeup artists in Indonesia?
A common trick aimed at MUAs is a fake client who sends an APK file disguised as an invitation or payment proof; OJK warns such files can steal data and drain bank accounts. Salon vacancies that charge for a kit or uniform are also a warning sign, because the Ministry of Manpower says recruitment fees are almost certainly a scam. Be wary of cosmetics partnerships that require buying packages and recruiting others.

Where can you find safe makeup artist work?
For salaried roles, look for vacancies on the official pages of salons, bridal boutiques, studios or production houses, and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. For freelance bookings, ask for the client's identity, the event date and address, and a written agreement on the rate and deposit. Go to clear locations and tell someone close where you are going. KarirAman does not list verified makeup artist vacancies yet.

Frequently asked questions
Do makeup artists in Indonesia need a certificate?
There is no mandatory licence for makeup artists, and many clients choose on portfolio and reviews. A competency certificate is voluntary; tests are run by BNSP-licensed certification bodies (LSP) against SKKNI standards such as SKKNI Kecantikan or SKKNI Rias Pengantin Modern Nusantara. Before you register, check the LSP's licence in the BNSP directory and verify certificates on BNSP's lookup page.
How can I make sure the cosmetics I use are safe and legal?
Check the cosmetic notification number on BPOM's Cek Produk site before buying, especially for very cheap products or products without an Indonesian label. The site also lists products withdrawn from circulation. Keep the packaging or a photo of the label for products you use on clients, so you can answer if a client has a skin reaction.
Can a salon charge me for a kit or uniform when I apply?
Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process, including for training or uniforms, is almost certainly a scam. A genuine salon provides work equipment or sets out the equipment rules in a written employment agreement, rather than charging you before you are hired. If you are asked to pay first, stop.
A client sent an invitation file ending in .apk. What should I do?
Do not open it. OJK warns that fake APK files can steal personal data and drain bank accounts once installed, and the communications ministry says such apps ask for SMS access so criminals can read OTP codes. Genuine invitations, reference photos and payment proofs are images, PDFs or links, not apps. Delete the file and block the sender.
Can I use photos of my clients' makeup for promotion?
Ask the client first, and if a photographer took the photo, ask the photographer too. Law 28/2014 protects photographic works (Article 40(1)(k)), and a client's face is personal data. Put the agreed photo use in your booking agreement, including which platforms you may use.
Can freelance makeup artists join BPJS Ketenagakerjaan?
Yes. Law 24/2011 Article 16 asks anyone other than employers, wage-earning workers and contribution-assistance recipients who meets the criteria to register themselves with the social security programmes. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has a non-wage-earner category for self-employed people. MUAs travel a lot and work late, so work-accident cover matters.
