What does a beautician do at an Indonesian beauty clinic?

A beauty therapist, often called a beautician in Indonesia, treats customers' facial skin, body and nails in beauty clinics, salons or treatment centres. The work covers consultation and skin analysis, facials, operating non-medical beauty devices, manicures, pedicures and product sales. The beauty competency standard (Manpower Minister Decree 180/2021) includes units such as facial skin analysis and basic facial care.

  • Welcome customers, consult with them and analyse their skin before treatment.
  • Do facials, facial cleansing, masks and facial massage according to procedure.
  • Operate non-medical beauty devices in line with your training and the workplace's standards.
  • Do manicures, pedicures, nail art or eyelash treatments where the workplace offers them.
  • Clean and sterilise tools and keep records of each customer's treatments.
  • Help doctors prepare patients and rooms, without performing medical procedures.
  • Explain and sell skincare products in line with workplace targets.

What do you need to become a beauty therapist?

Beauty therapist ads usually ask for a high school or vocational school diploma with a skincare course or experience, facial skills, good communication and willingness to work shifts. A beauty therapist is not medical staff: Law 17/2023 Article 198 defines medical staff as doctors and dentists, and the Ministry of Health stresses that medical procedures such as injections must be done by authorised medical staff. Employers judge your treatment skills, not a practising licence.

What does a typical beauty therapist job description look like?

Beauty therapist ads usually list the treatments you will handle, the devices used, product sales targets, the commission scheme and the workplace's opening hours. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any clinic. A legitimate ad never asks you to inject or perform medical procedures, and never charges a course fee as a condition of being hired.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • Senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) graduate, usually with a skincare course or experience.
  • Able to do basic facials and, for some clinics, use non-medical beauty devices.
  • Good communicator, comfortable explaining products to customers.
  • Careful about hygiene and safety procedures.
  • Willing to work shifts, including weekends.

Skills

Skin analysis, Facials, Facial massage, Non-medical beauty devices, Manicure and pedicure, Nail art, Tool sterilisation, Customer consultation, Product sales, Treatment records.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)

How much does a beauty therapist earn in Indonesia?

The table below shows the pay range employers listed in Jobstreet ads for beauty therapists as of October 2026, which is not an official average, together with the minimum wage. Many clinics pay a base wage plus commission on treatments and product sales. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23 bars pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than a year of service, and Article 19 averages output-based pay over the last 12 months.

What education do you need to become a beauty therapist?

Common routes are a vocational school (SMK) beauty programme, a skincare course or vocational training. The Manpower Ministry offers free beauty training (tata kecantikan) through Skillhub, where you can also check its partner training providers. To prove your skills, licensed BNSP certification bodies in the beauty field assess schemes such as caring for normal facial skin, manual care for acne-prone skin, and hand care with nail colouring.

Which treatments can beauticians legally do, and which must they never perform?

A beauty therapist must not perform medical procedures. The Ministry of Health told detikHealth on 1 May 2026 that every medical procedure, including injections, the use of medical devices and cosmetics with therapeutic claims, needs authorised medical staff. Never operate a medical device or carry out a treatment the clinic calls medical; if unsure, ask the doctor in charge for a written explanation. Law 17/2023 Article 137 and Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 396 reserve aesthetic plastic surgery for medical staff.

What about nail artists and nail technicians?

A nail artist cares for and decorates nails: manicures, pedicures, nail colouring, nail art and nail extensions. The work is found in beauty salons, nail studios and home-visit services. The beauty competency standard includes units on hand care and nail finishing, foot care and nail finishing, nail art and nail extensions, so a nail artist's skills can be assessed by a certification body (LSP) in the beauty field.

What are a beauty therapist's working conditions and rights?

Beauty therapists usually work shifts in clinics or salons, including weekends, with treatment and product sales targets. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 limits the grounds for wage deductions, Article 59 allows fines only for breaches set out expressly in the contract, company regulations or collective agreement, and Article 65 caps the total deductions. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register their workers with BPJS. Ask for the target rules in writing.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How can you check a beauty clinic before accepting a job offer?

Checking a clinic before you start protects you from two risks: being drawn into illegal practice, and working without clear rights. On 16 June 2026 the Ministry of Health said the illegal clinic it closed in Bali was not registered in the health facility registration system and employed staff without an STR and SIP. Simple steps you can take:

  1. Ask for the name of the doctor in charge and ask to see their STR and SIP, as well as the clinic's operating permit.
  2. Ask which procedures will be your job. Refuse if they include injections, fillers, operating medical devices or other medical procedures.
  3. Check the products used: BPOM advises checking the packaging, label, distribution permit and expiry date, and permit numbers can be checked on BPOM's website or app.
  4. Ask for a written contract that states your base pay, commission, targets and any penalties.
  5. Pay nothing to be hired, including compulsory courses at a provider the recruiter chooses.

If you find illegal practice, report it through an official complaint channel. The Panduan Warga guide to public-service complaints explains how to use SP4N-LAPOR.

How is a beauty therapist different from a spa therapist or a makeup artist?

All three work in beauty, but their focus differs. A beauty therapist treats facial skin, body and nails, often in a clinic with treatment devices. A spa therapist mostly does massage, body scrubs and body treatments in spas or hotels, and Ministry of Health Regulation 8/2014 requires every spa therapist to hold a registration certificate (STPT) from the local health office; see our spa therapist guide. A makeup artist does make-up for events, photos or the stage; see our makeup artist guide. If an ad mixes these duties, ask how the work is divided before you accept.

What interview questions might you be asked for beauty therapist jobs?

Interview questions for beauty therapist jobs often cover your household, cleaning or care experience, keeping trust and privacy, using cleaning products safely, and what to agree before you start. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Republika (official statement via media)

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.

Questions for this field

What household, cleaning or care work have you done?

Why they ask: The employer wants to know which tasks you already do well.

How to answer: Name the tasks and equipment you know, for how long and for whom, without exaggerating.

How do you keep the employer's trust about belongings and privacy at home or at work?

Why they ask: This work often happens in other people's private spaces.

How to answer: Explain that you ask before using things, report any damage and never share the employer's private matters.

How do you work safely with cleaning products?

Why they ask: Mixing the wrong chemicals can be dangerous.

How to answer: Mention reading labels, wearing gloves, opening windows and never mixing cleaning products.

What do you do if you are ill or have a family emergency?

Why they ask: The employer needs to know you will tell them and not just disappear.

How to answer: Say you will tell them as early as possible through the agreed channel and help arrange cover when you can.

What should be agreed before you start work?

Why they ask: A clear agreement prevents disputes and exploitation.

How to answer: Get in writing: duties, hours, rest days, pay and pay date, accommodation if you live in, and how either side can end the job. Keep your own KTP and personal documents.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

Republika (official statement via media)Kompas TV (official statement via media)detikFinance

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

Kompas TV (official statement via media)Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (Sekretariat Satgas PASTI)Koran Jakarta (official statement via media)

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What beauty therapist job scams should you watch for?

Common traps for would-be beauty therapists are paid course packages that promise direct job placement, unlicensed clinics that make staff perform medical procedures, and pay cuts for product targets. On 16 June 2026 the Ministry of Health announced the closure of an illegal beauty clinic in Bali that operated without a permit and employed staff without an STR and SIP. Check a clinic's licences before you accept an offer.

Where can you find safe beauty therapist jobs?

You can find safe beauty therapist jobs on clinics' and salons' official websites and accounts, on the Manpower Ministry's Karirhub portal, and at vocational school and training-centre job fairs. Before you accept an offer, make sure the clinic has an operating permit and its doctors hold an STR and SIP, ask for a written contract explaining commission and targets, and pay nothing to be hired. KarirAman does not yet list verified beauty therapist jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a beauty therapist inject fillers, botulinum toxin or vitamins?

No. The Ministry of Health's Director of Primary Health Care Governance, speaking to detikHealth on 1 May 2026, stressed that every medical procedure, including injections and the use of medical devices, must be done by authorised medical staff following professional standards. Law 17/2023 Article 198 defines medical staff as doctors and dentists. If a clinic asks you to inject, refuse and keep a record of the request.

What should I do if a clinic tells me to perform a medical procedure?

Refuse politely and keep evidence of the instruction. Law 17/2023 Article 312 bars anyone from practising as a health worker without an STR or SIP. On 16 June 2026 the Ministry of Health announced the closure of an illegal beauty clinic in Bali that employed staff without an STR and SIP, and urged the public to report suspected illegal practice through official government complaint channels. One such channel is SP4N-LAPOR!, for complaints to government bodies.

Does a beauty therapist need a competency certificate?

We found no rule that requires a specific licence for beauty therapists; a competency certificate mainly proves your skills. Licensed BNSP certification bodies (LSP) in the beauty field assess schemes such as caring for normal facial skin, manual care for acne-prone skin, and hand care with nail colouring. You can check whether a certificate is genuine on BNSP's certificate lookup page.

Can my pay be cut for missing a product sales target?

Not necessarily. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 allows wage deductions only on certain grounds, including fines, and does not list a missed target. Article 59 allows fines only for deliberate or negligent breaches set out expressly in the employment contract, company regulations or collective agreement, and Article 65 caps the total deductions. Ask for the target, bonus and penalty rules in writing before you start.

Can a beauty course that guarantees a job be trusted?

Check first. Law 8/1999 Article 9 bars businesses from offering services with uncertain promises, and Law 13/2003 as amended by Law 6/2023 requires private training providers to hold a business licence. Look the provider up in the Skillhub partner directory run by the Manpower Ministry, get any job placement promise in writing, and do not pay until you know who the prospective employer is.

How is a beauty therapist different from a beauty advisor?

A beauty therapist treats customers' skin, body or nails directly in a clinic or salon. A beauty advisor works at a cosmetics brand counter, explaining products, giving short consultations and selling, so the job is closer to a brand promoter (SPG or SPB). If the ad you are reading says beauty advisor, read our brand promoter guide to understand sales targets and your rights.
