What does a hairdresser or barber do?
A hairdresser, called kapster in Indonesia, cuts, washes, colours, perms, straightens and styles customers' hair in salons or barbershops. In barbershops, the kapster, also called a barber, shaves and trims beards. The beauty competency standard set by Manpower Minister Decree 180/2021 includes units on men's haircutting, women's haircutting, hair colouring, perming and straightening, so the scope of a hairdresser's work is clearly defined.
- Consult customers about the style and condition of their hair before starting.
- Wash hair and care for the scalp.
- Cut men's and women's hair with scissors, razors or clippers.
- Colour, perm or straighten hair with chemical products according to the instructions.
- Style hair with dryers, straighteners or styling products.
- Shave and trim beards or moustaches in barbershops.
- Clean and sterilise tools and keep the work area hygienic.
- Offer hair care products and record services for commission calculations.
What do you need to become a hairdresser or barber?
Hairdresser ads usually ask for basic cutting skills, salon or barbershop experience, a friendly manner and willingness to work weekends. Many employers accept graduates of hairdressing courses or vocational schools (SMK). We found no rule that requires a specific licence for hairdressers; a competency certificate from a BNSP-licensed certification body (LSP) proves your skills and can be checked on BNSP's website.
What does a typical hairdresser job description look like?
Hairdresser ads usually list the services you must master, the base pay and commission scheme, salon opening hours, and whether housing or meals are provided. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any salon or barbershop. A legitimate ad explains the commission formula in writing and never asks you to pay for a course or tools as a condition of being hired.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- Senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) graduate; many salons accept hairdressing course graduates.
- Able to do basic cuts; some ads ask for salon or barbershop experience.
- Able to use hair chemicals safely.
- Tidy, friendly and able to stand for long periods.
- Willing to work weekends and public holidays on a shift roster.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much do barbers and hairdressers earn in Indonesia?
The table below shows the pay range employers listed in Jobstreet ads for kapster as of October 2026, which is not an official average, together with the minimum wage. Many salons pay a base wage plus commission. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 19 says that for workers on output-based pay, the monthly wage is the average of the last 12 months for compliance purposes, including the minimum wage.

Jobstreet does not state the number of ads, the ad period, or whether figures are gross or net, and does not separate base pay from commission. These are advertised figures, not an official average. Some ads offer less than the local minimum wage (UMK), and micro and small businesses are exempt from the minimum wage, so always check your employment contract. How do you train as a barber or hairdresser in Indonesia?
Common routes are a hairdressing course at a training provider, a vocational school (SMK) beauty programme, or learning as a salon assistant. The Manpower Ministry offers free beauty training (tata kecantikan) through Skillhub, where you can also check its partner training providers. Once you are skilled, take a competency test at a BNSP-licensed certification body in the beauty field, for example in haircutting or hair colouring.

Can a hairdresser work abroad safely?
Yes, as long as you go through an official placement route. Check the vacancy and the placement agency on SISKOP2MI. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement, and any request for money outside that document, especially in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.
How does a hairdresser's commission relate to the minimum wage?
Commission schemes are lawful, but they do not remove an employee's right to the minimum wage. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 14 allows pay by time or by output, Article 18 says the amount is set by agreement, and Article 23 bars pay below the minimum wage. The exception is Article 36: micro and small businesses are exempt from the minimum wage, and their wages are agreed within a set floor.
What are a hairdresser's working conditions and rights?
Hairdressers usually stand for long hours, work weekends and are exposed to colouring and straightening chemicals. Ask for a written contract: Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 12 bars probation in a fixed-term contract, and Law 13/2003 Article 60 limits probation in a permanent contract to three months with pay no lower than the minimum wage. Wage deductions are lawful only for the reasons in Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63, such as fines written into the contract.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How do you apply for a hairdresser job safely?
Applying safely means seeing the workplace for yourself, understanding how your income is calculated, and paying nothing to be hired.
- Visit the salon or barbershop that is hiring and check that the business is actually operating.
- Ask about base pay, how commission is calculated, working hours and days off, then get it all in writing.
- If there is a haircut test, make sure it is short and not days of serving customers without pay.
- Refuse a compulsory paid course at a provider the recruiter chooses as a condition of being hired.
- Hand over copies of your diploma and certificates; show the originals only.
- Ask for a payslip each time you are paid so you can check your commission.

What is the difference between a kapster, a hairstylist and a barber?
In Indonesia, kapster is the everyday word for someone who cuts hair in a salon or barbershop. A hairstylist usually focuses on styling, colouring and hair care in a salon, while a barber focuses on short cuts and beard shaving in a barbershop. All three use the same core skills, and the beauty competency standard has separate units for men's and women's haircutting. If you want to do make-up or event hairstyles, see our makeup artist guide; for skincare, see our beauty therapist guide.
What interview questions might you be asked for hairdresser jobs?
Interview questions for hairdresser jobs often cover your household, cleaning or care experience, keeping trust and privacy, using cleaning products safely, and what to agree before you start. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.
Republika (official statement via media)
General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.
Questions for this field
What household, cleaning or care work have you done?
Why they ask: The employer wants to know which tasks you already do well.
How to answer: Name the tasks and equipment you know, for how long and for whom, without exaggerating.
How do you keep the employer's trust about belongings and privacy at home or at work?
Why they ask: This work often happens in other people's private spaces.
How to answer: Explain that you ask before using things, report any damage and never share the employer's private matters.
How do you work safely with cleaning products?
Why they ask: Mixing the wrong chemicals can be dangerous.
How to answer: Mention reading labels, wearing gloves, opening windows and never mixing cleaning products.

What hairdresser job scams should you watch for?
The scam that most often costs would-be hairdressers money is a paid course sold as a condition of employment, with a promise of direct placement at a salon. Law 8/1999 Article 9 bars businesses from offering services with uncertain promises. Also watch for unpaid trial periods, diplomas being held, and barber jobs abroad that are not listed on SISKOP2MI.

Frequently asked questions
Is a hairdresser on commission still entitled to the minimum wage?
If you are an employee, in principle yes. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 14 allows output-based pay, and Article 19 says that for compliance purposes the monthly wage is the average of the last 12 months' pay. Article 23 bars pay below the minimum wage. The exception is Article 36, which exempts micro and small businesses from the minimum wage, with pay agreed within set limits.
Can a barbershop ask me to work a trial period without pay?
No. Law 13/2003 Article 60 allows a probation period only in a permanent contract, for at most three months, and bars pay below the minimum wage during it. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 12 bars probation in a fixed-term contract (PKWT); if one is imposed anyway, it is void and your service still counts. A short haircut test during selection is different from serving customers for days without pay.
Does a hairdresser need a competency certificate?
We found no rule that requires a specific licence for hairdressers; a competency certificate mainly proves your skills. Licensed BNSP certification bodies (LSP) in the beauty field assess schemes such as haircutting, hair colouring, hair straightening, and scalp and hair care. You can check whether a certificate is genuine on BNSP's certificate lookup page before you list it in an application.
Can a salon keep a hairdresser's diploma until the contract ends?
Not as a job guarantee. Manpower Minister Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for work. The only exception is a diploma or certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written contract, and the employer must then keep it safe and pay compensation if it is damaged or lost.
How can I tell whether a barber job abroad is official?
Check the placement agency and the vacancy on SISKOP2MI before you hand over your passport or pay anything.
