Business analysts in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely
Business analysts translate business needs into system requirements for IT teams. Most ads ask for a degree in information systems or a related field.
Summary
- Business analysts draw out business needs, map how work is done, then write them up as specifications a development team can build.
- The Ministry of Manpower listed business management analysts, who analyse data to advise on business growth, among the 10 most sought-after fields of work in 2024 (CNN Indonesia).
- The national Software Requirement Analysis and Design standard (Decree 44 of 2017) covers eliciting, negotiating, specifying and validating requirements.
- No licence is required; as of 8 October 2026 BNSP's directory lists an IT Business Analyst scheme at an actively licensed certification body.
- A vacancy that asks you to pay a registration, training or certification fee before you are hired is a red flag.

What does a business analyst do in Indonesia?
A business analyst links business teams and development teams. Business analysts draw out needs through interviews and workshops, map current workflows, write requirements as user stories with acceptance criteria, then check through user acceptance testing that what is built meets the need. The units of Indonesia's Software Requirement Analysis and Design standard (Decree 44 of 2017) follow the same path, from identifying requirement sources to validating the specification.
- Interviewing users and stakeholders to draw out business needs.
- Mapping current workflows and proposing better ones.
- Writing user stories, acceptance criteria or requirement specification documents.
- Prioritising requirements with the product owner and stakeholders.
- Explaining requirements to developers, testers and designers, and answering their questions.
- Preparing and supporting user acceptance testing (UAT).
- Pulling simple data with SQL to support analysis and proposals.
What do you need to become a business analyst?
Business analysis is not a licensed profession in Indonesia; employers judge how well you draw out needs, write specifications and map processes. Ads usually ask for a bachelor's degree in information systems, informatics, industrial engineering or business, plus basic SQL. A competency certificate is optional: as of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists an IT Business Analyst scheme at an actively licensed body, and Government Regulation 10/2018 assigns competency certification to BNSP-licensed bodies.
What does a typical business analyst job description look like?
Business analyst ads usually name the business area, such as banking, logistics or retail, the documents you will write, such as requirement specifications and user stories, the working method, agile or waterfall, and the developers, testers and designers you will work with. We wrote the description below ourselves from common ad patterns; it is not a vacancy from any company. Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment; the Minister flagged attractive-appearance and marital-status requirements (reported by Kontan).

- Understands the software development life cycle, including agile methods.
- A plus: basic SQL and experience with a backlog management tool.
- Good spoken and written communication with both business and technical teams.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a business analyst earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not yet show a salary figure for business analysts because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. If you are an employee, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3) bars pay below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). The table below shows only the data we have.
| Data | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pay range in KarirAman verified vacancies | Not enough data yet (n < 30) | |
| Average net wage of employees, Publishing and telecommunications (BPS Sakernas May 2026) | IDR 5,242,975 | reference for the Publishing and telecommunications sector, not specific to this career; net (after deductions) Badan Pusat Statistik |
| Minimum wage (UMP/UMK) as the floor | IDR 2,317,601 to IDR 5,729,876 | Lowest 2026 UMP IDR 2,317,601 (West Java), highest IDR 5,729,876 (Jakarta) Micro and small businesses are exempt from the minimum wage rules; pay there is set by agreement and still has a legal floor. Which study and entry routes lead to business analysis?
The most common route is a bachelor's degree in information systems, informatics, industrial engineering, management or accounting, then an internship or a junior role. New graduates can apply to the Ministry of Manpower's national apprenticeship programme, MagangHub, which its official FAQ describes as free and six months long. Government ICT training is available through Skillhub. International certificates such as IIBA's ECBA are optional, not a job requirement.

- BLK and BPVP: free government job training in Indonesia and how to register on Skillhub

What are business process analysts and systems analysts?
A business process analyst focuses on how work flows: mapping current processes with notation such as BPMN, an Object Management Group standard now at version 2.0.2, finding bottlenecks and proposing new workflows. A systems analyst sits closer to the technical side and designs a system's structure and components from agreed requirements. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists a System Analyst scheme at several actively licensed bodies.
What should a business analyst know about personal data?
Business analysts often write requirements for features that collect customer data. Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 Article 16(2) requires personal data to be collected in a limited, specific, lawful and transparent way and processed for its stated purpose. These duties fall on the company as data controller, and Article 53 requires a data protection officer in certain cases. In practice, ask why each data field is needed and involve that officer early.
What documents does a business analyst usually produce?
A business analyst produces documents that many teams rely on. The table summarises the ones most often requested in Indonesian job ads and case studies. Names and formats differ between companies, so ask for a sample format at the interview.
| Document | Contents | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| Process map (BPMN or flowchart) | Current workflow and the proposed workflow | Business teams and management |
| User story | A need from the user's point of view | Product owner and developers |
| Acceptance criteria | Conditions for a feature to count as done | Developers and testers |
| Requirement specification | Functions, business rules and constraints in detail | Developers, testers and auditors |
| User acceptance test (UAT) scenarios | Test steps run by users | Users and testers |
For a portfolio, map a process you know well, such as a campus club's sign-up or orders in a family business, then write five to ten user stories with their acceptance criteria. Do not use real customer data or confidential documents from a former employer.

What interview questions might you be asked for business analyst jobs?
Interview questions for business analyst jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.
Republika (official statement via media)
General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.
Questions for this field
Tell me about the project you are proudest of and your role in it.
Why they ask: The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.
How to answer: Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.
How do you learn a new technology or tool?
Why they ask: Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.
How to answer: Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.
How do you explain technical things to people outside IT?
Why they ask: Technical work often needs the support of non-technical users and managers.
How to answer: Describe using simple comparisons and focusing on the effect on users rather than jargon.
How do you test your work before others use it?
Why they ask: Errors that reach users cost more to fix.
How to answer: Name how you test, such as automated tests, peer review or a checklist, and give one example of a bug caught early.
What do you do when you find a mistake after release?
Why they ask: How you take responsibility matters more than never making mistakes.
How to answer: Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.
How do you protect data and system access?
Why they ask: Careless access can open the door to data leaks.
How to answer: Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.
Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
-
Tell me about yourself.
Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
-
Why did you apply to this company?
Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
-
Why are you interested in this role?
Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
-
What are your strengths?
Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
-
How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?
Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
-
How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?
Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
-
Where do you see yourself in two or three years?
Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
-
What salary do you expect?
First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
-
When can you start?
Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
-
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.
What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What scams target business analyst job seekers?
The scam risk for business analyst vacancies is low, but applicants still meet the common patterns: registration or training fees, interviews held only by chat, and test files sent as APKs. The Ministry of Manpower names any request for money during recruitment as a sign of a fake vacancy. Be wary of courses that sell a job guarantee: Consumer Protection Law 8/1999 Article 9(1)(k) bars offers containing uncertain promises.

Where can you find safe business analyst vacancies?
Look for business analyst vacancies on companies' official careers sites, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise (BUMN) careers directory. A fair process usually includes a case study, such as mapping a process or writing user stories, then interviews with the product and technology teams by e-mail from the company's own domain. Check the company name on AHU before sending personal documents. KarirAman has no verified business analyst vacancies yet.

How is a business analyst different from a data analyst, product manager or business developer?
A business analyst details the needs and processes that must be built or changed. A data analyst pulls and processes data with SQL and dashboards to answer questions about the numbers. A product manager decides the product's direction and priorities, and the business analyst helps detail the requirements. Business development finds new clients and partners. In small teams these roles overlap, so compare the duties listed in each ad before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a business analyst and a data analyst?
A business analyst defines what needs to be built or changed: user needs, business rules and workflows. A data analyst pulls and processes data with SQL and dashboards to answer questions about the numbers. Business analysts also use data to support their proposals, and some Indonesian ads use the title analis bisnis data for data analyst work. Read the list of duties in the ad, not just the title.
Does a business analyst need an IT degree?
No rule requires a particular major. Business analyst ads in Indonesia often mention information systems, informatics, industrial engineering, management or accounting. As of 8 October 2026, the Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI register has no standard titled business analyst; the closest official reference is the Software Requirement Analysis and Design standard (Decree 44 of 2017). A competency certificate from a BNSP-licensed body (Government Regulation 10/2018) is optional, not a job requirement.
What are BPMN and user stories?
BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is a notation for business process diagrams maintained by the Object Management Group; the version on its website is 2.0.2. A user story is a short sentence describing a need from the user's point of view: who the user is, what they want to do and why. Each user story usually comes with acceptance criteria so the team knows when a feature is done.
Do I need an international business analysis certification?
No. IIBA offers ECBA for beginners, CCBA for experienced analysts and CBAP at the advanced level, but no Indonesian licence requires any of them to work as a business analyst. If you want one, register directly through the organisation's official website. Do not pay a middleman who promises a pass or sells exam questions.
Can a business analyst vacancy set a maximum age?
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. Age limits are allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects a person's ability to do it, and must not reduce the chance of getting work. A business analyst's skill can be judged through a case study, sample requirement documents and an interview, not through the applicant's age.
