What does a data analyst do?

A data analyst turns raw data into answers that people can act on. The work covers collecting and cleaning data, writing SQL queries, building dashboards, analysing trends and explaining findings to business teams. Data analysts work in technology companies, banking, retail, logistics and government agencies.

  • Collect and clean data from databases, spreadsheets or business applications.
  • Write SQL queries to pull and combine data.
  • Build dashboards and regular reports for business teams.
  • Analyse trends, compare periods and find the causes of changes in the numbers.
  • Present findings and recommendations with charts and plain language.
  • Monitor data quality and document metric definitions.

What do you need to become a data analyst in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required; employers judge your SQL, spreadsheet and statistics skills and how well you explain findings. The Ministry of Manpower set the national Data Analytics competency standard in Decree 200 of 2021, which is still in force. Under Government Regulation 10/2018, work competency certification is done by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP; check the licence in BNSP's LSP directory.

What does a typical data analyst job description look like?

How much does a data analyst earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a data-analyst-specific pay figure yet, including for fresh graduates, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official role-level pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. If you are an employee with less than one year of service, PP 36/2021 bars pay below the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) where you work.

What degree do you need to be a data analyst in Indonesia?

The most common route is a degree in statistics, mathematics, informatics, economics or industrial engineering, followed by deeper SQL and visualisation skills. Government training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site describes as free for participants, and the Digital Talent Scholarship of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. A portfolio built on open data helps you show your skills before you have work experience.

Can you work as a data analyst abroad?

What are a data analyst's duties when handling personal data?

Data analysts often handle personal data about customers or staff. Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 requires data controllers to keep personal data confidential (Article 36) and prevent unauthorised access (Article 39). In practice, follow your company's access rules, do not copy data to personal devices, and use anonymised data in your portfolio. The Ministry of Manpower has also set a Personal Data Protection competency standard (Decree 103 of 2023).

What does a data analyst's career path look like?

A typical path runs from junior data analyst to data analyst, senior analyst and analytics team lead. The path can branch into data science, data engineering (building data pipelines), business analysis, AI engineering, financial analysis or business intelligence management; in hospitals, data analysts often work with medical records officers. Asking the right questions, building trusted metrics and explaining findings to leaders matter as much as technical skill.

What interview questions might you be asked for data analyst jobs?

Interview questions for data analyst jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.

Questions for this field

Tell me about the project you are proudest of and your role in it.

Why they ask: The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.

How to answer: Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.

How do you learn a new technology or tool?

Why they ask: Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.

How to answer: Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.

How do you explain technical things to people outside IT?

Why they ask: Technical work often needs the support of non-technical users and managers.

How to answer: Describe using simple comparisons and focusing on the effect on users rather than jargon.

How do you test your work before others use it?

Why they ask: Errors that reach users cost more to fix.

How to answer: Name how you test, such as automated tests, peer review or a checklist, and give one example of a bug caught early.

What do you do when you find a mistake after release?

Why they ask: How you take responsibility matters more than never making mistakes.

How to answer: Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.

How do you protect data and system access?

Why they ask: Careless access can open the door to data leaks.

How to answer: Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

How do you check data quality before analysis or model training?

Why they ask: Bad data leads to misleading conclusions or models.

How to answer: Mention checks for missing values, outliers, the source and time range and possible bias, and how you document cleaning decisions.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target data analysts?

A common scam aimed at data job seekers is work-from-home data entry or processing that pays a little at first, then asks for deposits for further tasks; OJK's anti-scam task force describes this pattern. Also watch for registration or certification fees, chat-only interviews, and well-paid data jobs in Cambodia or Myanmar that require you to travel as a tourist.

Where can you find safe data analyst vacancies?

Look for vacancies on official company careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise careers directory. A normal hiring process usually includes an SQL test or case study and an interview with the data team, using a company email domain. Check the company in the AHU register before sending personal documents. KarirAman does not list verified data analyst vacancies yet.

Frequently asked questions

Does a data analyst need a statistics or computer science degree?

No law requires a particular major. Data analyst vacancies often ask for a degree in statistics, mathematics, informatics, economics or another quantitative field, but real skills matter more. The official competency reference is the Data Analytics standard (Decree 200 of 2021), and competency certificates are issued through BNSP-licensed certification bodies.

Are work-from-home data entry jobs with commission per task safe?

Be careful. OJK's anti-scam task force describes part-time work that pays a small amount first, then asks the victim to deposit money for further missions with a promise of getting it back plus a reward, until the scammer disappears. Genuine data work never asks you to deposit money in order to work or to be paid.

Can I use work data in my portfolio?

Do not use customers' personal data or confidential company data without permission. Law 27/2022 requires data controllers to keep personal data confidential and prevent unauthorised access, and your employment agreement may include a confidentiality clause. For a portfolio, use open or sample data and explain your method and results.

Can Indonesian data analysts work abroad legally?

Yes, through skilled work permits requested with an employer. In Germany, the EU Blue Card is for university graduates or experienced professionals with a contract of at least six months, and in the Netherlands a highly skilled migrant permit can only be requested by an employer recognised by the IND. If you go independently, Law 18/2017 Article 63 requires you to report to the manpower office and the Indonesian mission.

Can a data analyst vacancy set a maximum age?

Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment, and an age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and does not remove the chance of work. Analytical skill can be tested with case studies and tests, not age.

Data analyst vs data scientist vs business analyst: what is the difference?

Data analysts answer business questions from existing data with SQL, spreadsheets and dashboards. Data scientists build statistical or machine learning models to make predictions, so they usually need deeper programming and statistics. Business analysts translate business needs into system and process requirements. Data engineers build the pipelines and warehouses all three rely on. Our guide to each role explains how to get in.
