What do you need to become a store supervisor in Indonesia?

Store supervisor is not a licensed profession. Adverts usually ask for SMA, SMK or D3 graduates with experience as a shop assistant, cashier or assistant supervisor, the ability to lead a team and willingness to work shifts including weekends. The modern retail SKKNI (Kepmenaker 16/2018) includes competency units for this role, such as supervising retail operations and leading a retail operations team.

How much does a store supervisor earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not show a store supervisor pay figure yet because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24 bar employers from paying workers with less than one year of service below the local minimum wage. Also ask whether position allowances, incentives and overtime are paid separately.

Which education routes lead to store supervisor work?

Many store supervisors start from a business and marketing vocational school (SMK), then work as shop assistants or cashiers and move up through internal development programmes. D3 or degree holders can also join through retail management trainee schemes. Under PP 10/2018, competency certification follows the SKKNI and is run by BNSP-licensed certification bodies (LSP), so a retail certificate can help prove your skills.

Can a store supervisor's pay be cut for stock or cash shortages?

It can, but not at will. PP 36/2021 Article 63 allows wage deductions for fines and damages only if they are set out in the employment contract, company regulation or collective agreement. Article 65 also caps the total deductions from each wage payment. Ask for the shortage rules in writing, take part in stock counts and keep a copy of the signed count report.

Are store supervisors owed overtime pay?

In principle, yes. PP 35/2021 Article 27 requires overtime pay when a worker works beyond normal hours. The exception covers only certain job grades that act as thinkers, planners, executors or controllers whose hours cannot be limited and who receive higher pay, and it must be set out in the employment contract, company regulation or collective agreement. If it is not, overtime must be paid.

Which job scams target store supervisor applicants?

A common scam in retail vacancies is a request for a registration, training or uniform fee before hiring, which the Ministry of Manpower says is almost certainly fraud. For store supervisor posts, also watch for requests for your BPKB or original diploma as a guarantee for handling cash; Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from holding original personal documents as a guarantee for work.

Frequently asked questions

Can an employer ask a store supervisor for a BPKB as a guarantee?

No. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original personal documents as a guarantee for work, and it names the vehicle ownership book (BPKB) alongside diplomas, competency certificates, passports, birth and marriage certificates. Hand over copies only. If your documents are held, report it to the regency or city manpower office (Disnaker).

Is there a limit on pay deductions for stock shortages?

Yes. PP 36/2021 Article 63 allows wage deductions for fines or damages only as set out in the employment contract, company regulation or collective agreement, and Article 65 caps the total deductions from each wage payment. Ask for a copy of those rules and the jointly signed stock-count result before any deduction is applied.

How much overtime can a store supervisor be asked to work?

PP 35/2021 Article 26 limits overtime to four hours a day and eighteen hours a week, excluding overtime on weekly rest days or public holidays. Article 28 requires an instruction from the employer and the worker's consent in writing or through digital media. Keep your own record of hours worked as evidence in case of a dispute.

Is it normal to pay for training before becoming a store supervisor?

No. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process, for example for administration, training or uniforms, is almost certainly a scam. If you are asked to transfer money before you are hired, stop the process, keep the messages as evidence and check the vacancy against the retail chain's official careers site or accounts.
