Fuel station attendants in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely

Fuel station attendants in Indonesia serve fuel and take payment in shifts. Most ads ask for a school certificate and readiness for night shifts.

Summary

Medium scam risk
  • A fuel station attendant fills vehicles, takes cash and cashless payments, keeps the pump area clean and follows fire-safety procedures.
  • Many stations are run by partner businesses; one fuel supplier's partnership rules require station partners to be a limited company or a cooperative.
  • Indonesia's competency standard for petrol station operations (Decree 125/2021) has five units, from health, safety and environment to fuelling and supervision.
  • Government Regulation 36/2021 allows fines or compensation to be cut from wages only if the contract, company regulations or collective agreement provide for it.
  • A fuel company whose name scammers use says it never asks applicants for money; any SPBU vacancy that asks for a fee should be treated as suspect.

What does a fuel station attendant do in Indonesia?

A fuel station attendant guides vehicles to the dispenser, sets the price or volume, fills the tank, takes cash or cashless payment and hands over the receipt. Attendants also keep the pump area clean, watch for fire hazards or spills and report incidents. Indonesia's competency standard for petrol station operations, set by Decree 125/2021, describes these tasks, including using a fire extinguisher and giving first aid.

  • Guide vehicles to the dispenser and ask which fuel and how much the customer wants.
  • Set the price or volume on the dispenser, fill the vehicle and put the nozzle back.
  • Take cash, card or e-wallet payments and hand over the printed receipt.
  • Count the till and hand it over to the next shift following the station's procedure.
  • Keep the pump area clean and deal with small spills using the equipment provided.
  • Spot fire hazards, check fire extinguishers and report dangerous incidents.
  • Manage the vehicle queue and stay polite when the station is busy.

What do you need to work at a fuel station in Indonesia, and can school leavers apply?

SPBU attendant ads in Indonesia usually ask for a senior high or vocational school certificate, readiness for rotating shifts including nights, care with cash and a friendly manner. It is not a licensed job. Height, appearance, marital status or age limits unrelated to the work must not screen applicants out: Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans discrimination in recruitment.

What does a typical fuel station attendant job description look like?

A clear SPBU attendant ad names the business that runs the station, the station address, the shift pattern and how till handover works. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any station. Check any ad that uses only a fuel brand's name with no operating company, or asks you to contact a personal phone number, before you reply.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

  • Careful with money and honest at till handover.
  • Fit enough to stand for long periods outdoors.
  • Friendly, polite and able to talk with customers.
  • Willing to follow safety training and station procedures.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a fuel station attendant earn in Indonesia?

A fuel station attendant must be paid at least the minimum wage that applies where the station is (the provincial minimum, or the regency or city minimum where one is set): Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23 bans paying below it for workers with less than one year of service, except in micro and small businesses (Article 36). KarirAman shows no attendant-specific figure yet, as no data meets our standard. Ask in writing about overtime, meal allowances and incentives.

Which education routes lead to fuel station work in Indonesia?

Most fuel station attendants are trained on the job after they are hired. Vocational school and courses at public training centres (BLK or BPVP) help build basic work safety and customer service. Decree 125/2021 sets the petrol station operations competency standard, with units on health, safety and environment, fuel receipt, storage and dispensing, and supervision, which can guide training content.

Who actually employs fuel station attendants in Indonesia?

Fuel station attendants in Indonesia are employed by the business that runs their station. Many stations are run by partner businesses, not by the fuel brand's owner: one fuel supplier's partnership site requires station partners to be a limited company or a cooperative. Make sure your contract names your employer and check it in AHU. Be wary of offers in a fuel brand's name that ask for a fee or come from free e-mail accounts.

How many hours do fuel station attendants work, how do shifts run, and what are their rights?

Many stations stay open late or around the clock, so attendants work rotating shifts. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 21 caps normal working time at 40 hours a week, and work beyond that is overtime that must be paid. For women working between 23.00 and 07.00, Law 13/2003 Article 76 requires employers to provide nutritious food and keep them safe. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires social security (BPJS) registration.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

Can till shortages be deducted from a fuel station attendant's pay?

Till shortages may be deducted only on a clear basis. Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 allows wage deductions for fines and compensation under the employment contract, company regulations or collective agreement, and Article 59 says fines apply only to deliberate or negligent breaches that are expressly provided for. Article 65 caps total deductions per wage payment. Ask for the shortage calculation in writing.

How do you apply for a fuel station job safely?

Applying safely for a fuel station attendant job in Indonesia means confirming that the station operator is real, paying nothing and keeping your original documents.

  1. Go to the station named in the ad and ask the shift supervisor or the station office directly.
  2. Ask for the name of the company or cooperative that runs the station and check it in AHU.
  3. Ignore offers that claim to be official fuel-brand recruitment through chat or free e-mail accounts.
  4. Never pay a registration, uniform, training or till deposit fee.
  5. Ask for a written employment contract that states the pay, shift pattern, till-shortage rules and social security.
  6. Hand over a copy of your diploma; show the original and take it home.

What interview questions might you be asked for fuel station attendant jobs?

Interview questions for fuel station attendant jobs often cover how you offer products, targets you have met, dealing with angry customers, what you do when you miss a target, and honesty in selling. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Which job scams target fuel station attendant applicants?

One scam to watch for is a vacancy that borrows a fuel brand's name and then asks for a registration, work-permit or insurance fee before you start. A fuel company whose name is misused says on its official page that it never asks applicants for money at any stage, and that its official messages never come from free e-mail accounts. The Ministry of Manpower says any fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam.

Where can you find safe fuel station attendant vacancies?

Safe fuel station attendant vacancies are usually posted by the station operator itself: on the station notice board, the operator's official site or account, or the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. Visit the station named in the ad and ask the shift supervisor whether the vacancy is real. Check the operator's registered name in AHU before you hand over any data. KarirAman does not list verified attendant vacancies yet.

Frequently asked questions

Are petrol station attendants hired directly by the fuel brand?

Not always. Many stations are run by partner businesses; the partnership site of one fuel supplier requires prospective station partners to be incorporated businesses, either a limited company (PT) or a cooperative. Ask at the station which business will employ you, then check its registered name in AHU. The warning sign is not the brand name but a request for money: treat an offer in a fuel brand's name that asks for a fee or comes from a free e-mail account as suspect.

Can a station operator ask for a cash deposit to cover future till shortages?

Being asked for money before you start work is a warning sign. The Ministry of Manpower says genuine companies do not charge applicants anything. If a till shortage happens once you work there, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 allows wage deductions only for fines or compensation set out in the employment contract, company regulations or collective agreement, and Article 65 caps total deductions per wage payment.

Do fuel station attendants get overtime pay?

Yes, when you work beyond normal hours. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 21 sets working time at 7 hours a day for a six-day week or 8 hours a day for a five-day week, 40 hours a week either way. Articles 26 to 28 set overtime limits, the duty to pay overtime and the need for a written or digital instruction and consent. These rules may change once the new Labour Protection Law, approved by parliament on 6 October 2026, takes effect.

Must the station provide personal protective equipment?

Yes. Law 1/1970 on Work Safety, Article 14(c), requires the management of a workplace to provide all required personal protective equipment free of charge. Article 12 also lets workers object to working where safety conditions and protective equipment are in doubt. The petrol station competency standard lists protective equipment, fire extinguishers, safety signs and a spill kit as work equipment.

What is the career path for a fuel station attendant?

Attendants who are careful and trusted with cash can become team leaders or shift supervisors. The petrol station competency standard includes a unit on supervising station operations: assigning tasks and shift rosters, checking dispenser volumes with a calibrated measure, briefing staff on service, and monitoring fuel deliveries, tank stock and queues. From there, the next steps are station administration or station manager.

Can a station operator keep my original diploma?

Not as a condition of work. Minister of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 of 20 May 2025 bans employers from requiring or holding workers' original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee. The only exception is a diploma or certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written agreement. Hand over copies and take the originals home after showing them.
