What does a poultry farm worker do in Indonesia?
Anak kandang is the everyday Indonesian name for a livestock farm worker who looks after the animals day to day. On a poultry farm the job is feeding and watering, cleaning pens and feeders, checking for sick or dead birds, helping with vaccinations, recording output and helping at harvest. On cattle or goat farms the work is similar, plus washing and moving animals. As employees, livestock farm workers are covered by labour law, including the minimum wage and protective equipment.
- Feeding and watering animals on a set schedule and in set amounts.
- Cleaning pens, feeders and drinkers, and replacing bedding.
- Checking animals every day and reporting sick or dead animals to a supervisor.
- Helping with vaccinations and medicines as directed by a vet or veterinary paramedic.
- Recording animal numbers, feed use and output such as eggs or harvest weight.
- Helping with harvesting, loading and dispatching animals or animal products.
- Following hygiene procedures for entering animal housing and wearing protective equipment.
What are the requirements to work on a livestock farm in Indonesia?
Livestock farm work is not a licensed profession, so there is no special licence for a farm hand. Ads usually ask for good health, readiness for physical work and willingness to work on site. Workers must be adults: Article 68 of Law 13/2003 bans employing children, and Article 74 bans involving children in dangerous work. Article 5 of the same law gives every worker an equal chance to get work without discrimination.
What does a typical livestock farm worker job description look like?
Farm job ads usually state the type of animal (broilers, layers, cattle or goats), the farm location, working hours or schedule, monthly or per-cycle pay, and accommodation if provided. The description below is written by us from common ad patterns, not taken from any company's vacancy. A genuine ad names a company or farm owner that can be checked and does not ask applicants for money.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- Healthy and ready for physical work, including lifting feed sacks.
- Careful and comfortable handling animals.
- Primary education up to senior high or vocational school; farm experience is a plus.
- Willing to work on site and follow the animals' care schedule.
- Willing to follow hygiene and workplace safety rules.
Skills
Animal care, Feeding and watering, Pen hygiene, Spotting signs of illness, Production records, Using protective equipment, Physical stamina.
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)
What is the minimum pay of a livestock farm worker?
KarirAman does not show a salary figure for livestock farm workers yet, because no data meets our standard. BPS recorded the lowest wages for both male and female employees in May 2026 in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The floor is the minimum wage, either the provincial (UMP) or district (UMK) rate for 2026: Article 88E(2) of Law 13/2003, as amended by Law 6/2023, bans paying below it, except in micro and small businesses, which set wages by agreement within limits (Government Regulation 36/2021, Article 36).

What education do you need for livestock farm work?
Farm hands usually learn on the job, so people with primary to senior high school education can apply. Routes that strengthen your chances are vocational school (SMK) in agriculture or livestock, training at government training centres (BLK or BPVP), and competence certification through a BNSP-licensed certification body. For technical posts such as pen supervisor, vocational education in animal husbandry or animal health helps. Clinical animal care is done by veterinary paramedics and vets, who have their own guides.

Can I work on a livestock farm in Japan or the UK through a legal route?
Yes. The agriculture field of Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (Tokutei Ginou) scheme covers livestock farming, meaning animal care and the collection, shipping and sorting of livestock products, with an agriculture skills test and a Japanese test, JFT-Basic or JLPT N4. The UK Seasonal Worker visa covers poultry work from 2 October to 31 December through official scheme operators. For both routes, go through a P3MI that is active on SISKOP2MI or as an independent migrant worker under the rules, not through a broker.
How do I stay safe and healthy working in animal housing?
Safety in animal housing starts with protective equipment. Article 14(c) of Law 1/1970 requires workplace managers to provide all required personal protective equipment free of charge, and Article 12 gives workers the right to object when safety conditions or protective equipment are in doubt. Ask for a mask, gloves, boots and work clothes when cleaning pens, spraying disinfectant or handling sick animals, and wash your hands before eating.
What should I ask before taking a job on a remote farm?
Farms are often far from town, so ask for written answers before you travel:
- The name and address of the farm owner or company; check the company name on AHU if it is a company.
- Your employment status (permanent, fixed-term or daily), how pay is calculated, the payday and any deductions.
- Who pays travel there and back, and whether housing and meals are provided.
- When you will be registered with BPJS, and who provides protective equipment.
- Working hours, days off, and who covers the animals on days off.
Keep a copy of your employment contract and photos of your documents somewhere else, for example with a family member. If wages are not paid or are below the minimum wage, the steps are in unpaid or late wages. Before working abroad, read fake overseas job offers.

Why did you apply to this company?
Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
-
Why are you interested in this role?
Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
-

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
-

What scams target livestock farm job seekers?
The most dangerous pattern is an overseas farm job offered by an individual recruiter, with an upfront fee or travel on a tourist visa. In Indonesia, watch for people who ask for money to get you hired, and brokers who cover your travel or lodging and then claim it back as a debt while holding your documents. Law 21/2007 counts debt bondage for exploitation as human trafficking. Check every offer against the red flags on this page.

Frequently asked questions
Are livestock farm workers entitled to BPJS social security?
Yes, if they are employees. Article 15(1) of Law 24/2011 requires employers to register themselves and their workers with BPJS in stages, according to the programmes they join. Ask for your BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and BPJS Kesehatan membership numbers and check that contributions are actually paid.
Can a farm pay per production cycle or by output?
Yes. Government Regulation 36/2021 allows output-based wages set by agreement (Articles 14 and 18), and for legal purposes the monthly wage is the average of the last 12 months (Article 19). Pay may still not fall below the minimum wage for workers who must be paid it (Article 23), and wages must be paid at least once a month (Article 55).
Can children help in the animal pens?
Article 68 of Law 13/2003 bans employers from employing children. Article 69 allows only children aged 13 to 15 to do light work with parental permission, for at most three hours, in the daytime and outside school hours. Article 74 bans involving children in work that endangers their health or safety.
