Veterinary paramedics and groomers: duties, pay and applying safely
Veterinary paramedics hold an animal health SMK or D3 and work under a vet's supervision. Paid grooming courses that promise a job afterwards are suspect.
Summary
- Law 18/2009 says veterinary paramedics hold an animal health diploma or an animal health vocational school certificate.
- Veterinary paramedics work under a veterinarian's supervision under Law 18/2009 Article 71(2).
- Pet groomer, pet shop, shelter and animal keeper roles are other animal careers that need no practice licence.
- A paid grooming course that is required as a condition of being hired is a warning sign.

What does a veterinary paramedic do in Indonesia?
Veterinary paramedics help vets care for animals: they hold animals during examinations, prepare instruments, give food and medicine as instructed, care for inpatients and keep records. Law 18/2009 on Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, Article 71(2), says veterinary paramedics work under a veterinarian's supervision. In many clinics, paramedics also do grooming.
- Assist the vet during examinations, procedures and surgery.
- Hold and calm animals safely during examinations.
- Give food, medicine and inpatient care as the vet instructs.
- Clean kennels, prepare instruments and keep the treatment room sterile.
- Bathe, brush and trim animals' coats or nails (grooming).
- Monitor animals and report changes to the vet.
- Record patient data and explain home care to owners.
What do you need to become a veterinary paramedic in Indonesia?
Law 18/2009 Article 70(4) says veterinary paramedics hold an animal health diploma and/or an animal health vocational school certificate. To provide services, Article 72 as amended by Law 6/2023 requires animal health workers to meet business licensing from the central government. Groomers and pet shop staff do not need that licence; employers usually judge skills and experience.

Groomer vacancies often ask for a portfolio of grooming work. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any clinic or pet shop, so there is no apply button.

We do not show a figure specific to veterinary paramedics or cat groomers yet because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample or an official pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. As a floor, PP 36/2021 Article 24 applies the minimum wage, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city, to workers with less than one year of service.

How do you become a pet groomer or veterinary paramedic in Indonesia?
The route recognised by Law 18/2009 Article 70(4) is an animal health vocational school (SMK) or an animal health diploma. Senior high school graduates who want to work with animals can start with a grooming course at a training provider (LPK) or training at a government vocational centre (BLK), then build experience. To become a vet, you need a veterinary science degree and the professional programme.

What are working conditions and rights like for veterinary paramedics?
Veterinary paramedics and groomers work with animals that can bite or scratch and risk diseases that pass from animals to people, such as rabies, so vaccination and protective equipment matter. Night duty for inpatient animals is also common. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register workers with BPJS social security, and the minimum wage is the floor for workers with under one year of service.

What does a veterinary paramedic career path look like?
Veterinary paramedics can become head paramedics or inpatient coordinators, then study veterinary medicine to become vets, a path that Law 18/2009 Article 70 clearly separates. Experienced groomers often open their own pet salon. Experience at shelters or in conservation leads to animal keeper and programme coordinator roles.
Which other animal careers can you pursue in Indonesia?
Besides clinic-based veterinary paramedic work, several animal careers can start without a veterinary degree. They do not need an animal health service licence, but they still demand patience, hygiene and respect for animal welfare.
What does a pet groomer do?
Groomers bathe, dry, brush and trim pets' coats and nails, and report skin problems or wounds to the owner or vet. They work in pet shops, clinics, pet salons or as mobile groomers visiting homes. The skills are learned through courses and practice, and a portfolio of grooming work helps when applying.
What does pet shop staff do?
Pet shop staff serve customers, arrange food and supplies, keep the shop clean and care for animals that are boarded or sold. Basic knowledge of animal food and care earns customers' trust. If the shop also sells animals, notice whether they are properly cared for.
What does shelter work involve?
Shelter staff clean kennels, feed animals, care for sick animals with a vet and help with adoptions. Many shelters are run by community organisations on small budgets, so some roles are voluntary. See animal organisations (PanduanHewan, not an endorsement) and read about volunteering for animals (PanduanHewan) before you sign up. Volunteers should never be asked to pay to work.
What does zoo and wildlife conservation work involve?
Animal keepers at zoos, wildlife parks or rescue centres prepare special diets, clean enclosures, observe behaviour and assist the vet. Field conservation work, for example in national parks (PanduanHewan), often needs a background in biology, forestry or veterinary science. Make sure the organisation recruiting you is legally established.
What does farm work involve?
Farm workers feed animals, clean pens, monitor livestock health and help with vaccination under the direction of a vet or veterinary paramedic. Biosecurity, the habit of keeping things clean so disease does not spread, is a key skill in this field.
What interview questions might you be asked for veterinary paramedic jobs?
Interview questions for veterinary paramedic jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target veterinary paramedics and groomers?
We rate the scam risk in this field as low, but some tricks need watching: paid grooming courses sold as a condition of being hired, registration or uniform fees, and interviews held only by chat. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. Offers to care for animals abroad from individuals also breach Law 18/2017 Article 69.

Where can you find safe veterinary paramedic vacancies and how should you apply?
Look for vacancies on the official websites or accounts of vet clinics, animal hospitals, pet shops, farms and conservation organisations, and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. Visit the workplace before accepting an offer, look at the kennels and how the animals are cared for, and ask for a written employment agreement. Never pay for a course or any fee as a condition of being hired.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a veterinary paramedic and a veterinarian?
Law 18/2009 Article 70 classes veterinarians as veterinary medical staff, while veterinary paramedics are a separate group holding an animal health diploma or animal health vocational school certificate. Veterinary paramedics do animal health work within their competence under a vet's supervision (Article 71(2)), so diagnosis and medical decisions stay with the veterinarian.
Do pet groomers in Indonesia need a certificate or licence?
There is no specific practice licence for groomers like the licence for animal health services. Many groomers learn through courses and work experience at pet shops. If you take a course, check that the provider is registered, that the content and cost are clear, and that the course is your own choice, not a paid condition set by an employer who promises you a job.
Can a veterinary paramedic open their own service?
Law 18/2009 Article 72(1), as amended by Law 6/2023, requires animal health workers who provide animal health services to meet business licensing from the central government. Veterinary paramedics also still work under a veterinarian's supervision (Article 71(2)). Ask the local office responsible for animal health about the current rules before opening a service.
Can a pet shop or clinic charge me a fee when I apply?
It should not. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process, such as a registration, training or uniform fee, is almost certainly a scam. A legitimate employer trains new staff without charging a fee as a condition of being hired. If you are asked to pay, stop and check the business's address and official website.
How can I start working with animals without an animal health qualification?
You can start as pet shop staff, a groomer's assistant, or a cleaning and care worker at a shelter, then build skills through courses. Volunteering with animal organisations also builds experience, as long as you are not asked to pay for an 'internship'. If you want to become a veterinary paramedic, go on to an animal health vocational school or D3 diploma.
