What does a train driver do in Indonesia?

A train driver (masinis) operates the train and is responsible as the leader of the journey, while an assistant driver supports the driver and may take over until the nearest station if the driver falls ill or dies suddenly. Both definitions are set in Ministerial Regulation PM 4/2017 on rolling-stock crew certification. Day to day, drivers check the rolling stock, read the timetable graph and signals, use the radio, handle faults and shunt.

How much does a train driver earn in Indonesia?

What education path leads to a train driver job?

The most common path is to finish SMA, SMK or a D3 diploma, then join a rail operator's recruitment and crew training. In the 2026 KAI Group recruitment, train driver posts were open to senior high school and D3 graduates, according to Antara. The Indonesian Railway Polytechnic in Madiun, a state vocational college under the Ministry of Transportation, offers D3 railway programmes such as railway mechanical technology and railway transport management.

How does a career progress from assistant driver to instructor?

PM 4/2017 divides rolling-stock crew into three levels, and assistant drivers sit at the first. After at least one year or 2,000 working hours recorded in a logbook and a pass in the competency test, you can move to the second level as a driver who may also act as a supervisor. What other railway jobs are there besides train driver?

On the frontline there are conductors (kondektur) who work on board, and train dispatchers (PPKA) who regulate train movements from stations. Dispatchers and their assistants, such as platform supervisors, shunters, signal box staff and switch operators, need the competency certificates set out in PM 19/2023. In the 2026 KAI Group recruitment, conductor posts were open to senior high school and D3 graduates, and assistant dispatcher posts to D3 graduates.

Do train attendants also need a train driver certificate?

No. PM 4/2017 Article 3(2) says rolling-stock crew in manual operation consist only of train drivers and assistant drivers, so the crew competency certificate is for the people who drive the train. When we checked the Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI registry on 8 October 2026, the railway standards included ones for the rail industry and for passenger service at stations, but none for train drivers. One reported scheme is fake recruitment in a rail operator's name through TikTok accounts that send applicants to certain contact numbers. On 8 April 2026, KAI's Jakarta operating area said such accounts then asked for administration or selection fees, with promises of an instant pass.
