Corporate tax officer in Indonesia: duties, brevet, Coretax, pay and applying safely
Company tax officers handle PPh 21, PPh 23, PPh 25 and VAT invoices in Coretax. Brevet is training, not a licence; tax consultant rules changed in 2026.

- PMK 81/2024, the tax rules for running the Coretax DJP system, has applied since 1 January 2025; electronic VAT invoices need approval from the tax office (DJP).

What does a corporate tax officer do in Indonesia?
A corporate tax officer handles a company's tax obligations: withholding PPh 21 on employee pay, withholding PPh 23 on certain service or rental payments, calculating PPh 25 instalments, issuing VAT invoices, then paying and reporting them. All of this now runs in Coretax DJP, the tax administration system built under the core tax system reform project set by Presidential Regulation 40/2018. This is a company role, not a post at the tax office, and a brevet tax course is usually a plus rather than a state licence.
- Calculate and withhold PPh 21 on employee pay, then issue the withholding slips.
- Withhold PPh 23 on certain service or rental payments to other parties.
- Issue output VAT invoices and check input VAT invoices in Coretax.
- Prepare monthly payments and returns and the data for the annual corporate return.
- Calculate PPh 25 instalments and reconcile tax with the books.
- File withholding slips, invoices and payment proofs so they are ready for a tax audit.
- Follow tax rule changes and explain them to the finance team.
What do you need to become a tax officer in Indonesia?
Tax officer vacancies usually ask for a D3 or bachelor's degree in accounting or taxation, an understanding of income tax and VAT, and readiness to use Coretax. A brevet is often listed as a plus, but it is training, not a state licence. A licence is only needed to practise as a tax consultant: PMK 55/2026 Article 3 requires a Tax Consultant Licence for everyone working as a tax consultant.
What does a typical tax officer job description look like?
Tax officer ads usually ask for an understanding of PPh 21, PPh 23 and VAT, experience issuing tax invoices and withholding slips, and accuracy under monthly deadlines. The description below is written in our own words from common ad patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button. The software brands requested vary, so focus on the tax concepts.

How much does a tax officer earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not yet have tax officer pay data that meets our standard: there are no verified vacancies with enough samples and no official pay scale for company tax staff. Ranges on job sites often lack sample sizes. The floor is still the minimum wage: Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24 forbid pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service.

Which education route leads to becoming a tax officer?
The usual route is a D3 or bachelor's degree in accounting or taxation; vocational school accounting graduates can start in tax administration. Brevet A and B training, then C, is offered by providers including IAI and IAPI, and according to IAPI it also helps with preparing for tax consultant certification. Under PMK 55/2026, tax consultant competence is now shown by a Certificate of Competence from a Ministry of Finance competency test.
Is a tax brevet an official government licence?
No. A brevet is tiered tax training run by professional associations and course providers; IAI, for example, runs it under a course-provider permit, and IAPI describes it as a training programme. For acting as a taxpayer's proxy, a brevet certificate counts only during a transition: PMK 44/2026 Article 16 allows brevet holders to be appointed as proxies until 31 December 2026 at the latest.
How do a tax officer, a tax proxy and a tax consultant differ?
A tax officer works for their own company. A proxy (kuasa) is a person a taxpayer appoints with a special power of attorney to handle their tax rights and obligations; under PMK 44/2026, a proxy can be a tax consultant, another party holding a Certificate of Registration, or a family member. A tax consultant serves clients and must hold a Tax Consultant Licence at level A, B or C under PMK 55/2026.
What should a tax officer master in Coretax?
A tax officer should be confident issuing tax invoices and withholding slips, making payments and filing returns in Coretax DJP. PMK 81/2024 Articles 386 and 387 say tax invoices are created electronically through the Taxpayer Portal, signed electronically and must be approved by DJP; an invoice without approval is not a tax invoice. Guard the company's authorisation code and passwords as carefully as a bank account.
Which taxes does a corporate tax officer usually handle?
| Tax | What is handled | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| PPh Article 21 | Withholding tax on salaries, wages and fees paid to employees or non-employees | Income Tax Law Article 21; PMK 168/2023 |
| PPh Article 23 | Withholding tax on dividends, interest, royalties, rent and certain service fees paid by entities | Income Tax Law Article 23 |
| PPh Article 25 | Monthly self-paid instalments of current-year income tax | Income Tax Law Article 25; PMK 81/2024 |
| VAT (PPN) | Electronic tax invoices for taxable goods or services supplied by a VAT-registered business (PKP) | PMK 81/2024 Articles 386 and 387 |
Rates and calculation methods change over time, so always use the latest official DJP rules and guidance. To understand the PPh 21 deduction on a payslip, the Panduan Warga PPh 21 net salary calculator helps you check the figures, and the Panduan Warga Coretax guide explains Coretax accounts and annual returns for individuals.
What changed for the USKP exam and tax consultants in 2026?
PMK 55/2026 on Tax Consultants and Other Parties Acting as Taxpayer Proxies, set on 22 July 2026, revoked PMK 111/2014 and its amendment. The changes that matter for would-be tax consultants:
- Competence through a Ministry of Finance test. A Certificate of Competence (Surat Keterangan Kompetensi, SKK) at level A, B or C is obtained by passing a competency test run by the Ministry of Finance's education and training unit. The SKK lasts three years and is renewed through a refresher exam (Articles 7 to 10).
- Professional exam by the association. Licence applicants must also pass a professional exam run by a tax consultant association, hold at least a bachelor's degree and, for level B or C licences, have tax work experience (Article 5). Associations must hold the professional exam by 31 December 2026 at the latest (Article 61).
- Transition. The old certification (USKP) runs until 31 December 2026 at the latest, and old tax consultant certificates count as an SKK for up to two years from issue (Article 60).
- Licence levels. Level A covers certain individual taxpayers, level B covers individuals and entities other than foreign-investment companies and permanent establishments, and level C covers all taxpayers (Article 4).
These rules are new and their technical guidance may change. Check official Ministry of Finance announcements before registering for an exam.
Can a brevet holder act as a taxpayer's proxy?
Yes, until 31 December 2026; from 1 January 2027 a brevet alone no longer qualifies someone to be a proxy. PMK 44/2026, in force since 6 July 2026, sorts proxies into three groups: licensed tax consultants, other parties holding a Certificate of Registration (Surat Keterangan Terdaftar, SKT) and family members (Articles 2 and 3). Article 16 sets a transition: a person other than a tax consultant who holds a brevet certificate, or a tax diploma of at least D3 from an A-accredited university, may be appointed as a proxy until 31 December 2026, using a paper special power of attorney filed at the tax office. From then on, under PMK 55/2026, other parties need an SKT, which is issued together with an SKK. The taxpayer stays responsible for anything handled by the proxy.
What does a tax officer's career path look like?
Tax officers usually move up to senior tax, tax supervisor or tax manager, then head of tax in a business group. Another route is becoming a licensed tax consultant at a tax consulting firm, with an SKK, the professional exam and the experience each licence level needs under PMK 55/2026. Many tax officers move between the accounting staff, accountant and auditor routes, because tax reports start from the same books. Tax officers also work with HR on PPh 21 and social security contributions; the Panduan Warga BPJS contributions calculator is useful for checking employee contributions.
How do you protect a company tax account from fraud?
- Open Coretax only through the official site coretaxdjp.pajak.go.id, never through a link in a message.
- Never give an OTP, password, passphrase or authorisation code to anyone, including someone who claims to be a DJP officer.
- Do not download tax apps from links sent by chat or e-mail.
- Report suspicious messages to your nearest tax office or DJP's official complaint channels, and to the police if you lost money.

What interview questions might you be asked for tax officer jobs?
Interview questions for tax officer jobs often cover accuracy with figures, the accounting software or spreadsheets you use, handling discrepancies, what you would do if asked to change figures, and reporting deadlines. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field
How do you make sure the figures in a report are right?
Why they ask: Financial reports drive important decisions, so accuracy comes first.
How to answer: Explain your steps: reconciling with transaction evidence, cross-checking between reports and keeping a traceable record of changes.
Which accounting software or spreadsheets have you used?
Why they ask: The company wants to know how quickly you can work with its systems.
How to answer: Name the programs and tasks, such as journals, bank reconciliations or summary tables. If you have not used their system, explain how you learn a new one.
Tell me about a time you found a discrepancy or a recording error.
Why they ask: How you trace a discrepancy shows persistence and honesty.
How to answer: Use the STAR pattern. Describe how you traced the cause, documented the correction and reported it to your supervisor.
What would you do if you were asked to change figures without a clear basis?
Why they ask: This tests integrity, which matters in finance.
How to answer: Say you would ask for supporting documents, refuse to falsify records and raise the matter through the company's proper channel.
How do you organise your work before month-end closing or a reporting deadline?
Why they ask: Closing periods are busy and deadlines are fixed.
How to answer: Describe your checklist, a schedule worked back from the deadline and the work you prepare early.

What scams target tax officers?
The most dangerous scam for tax officers is a fraudster posing as a DJP officer who offers help activating Coretax, then asks for the OTP or password of the company account. DJP announcement PENG-50/PJ.09/2025 says officers never ask for OTP codes, passwords, passphrases or device access. When applying for jobs, watch for recruiters who charge for tax training or sell certificates without an exam.
Warning signs in tax officer job ads
- Someone claiming to be a DJP officer offers help activating Coretax, or asks for the OTP, password or passphrase of the company tax account.
- You are asked to open a data-migration link or download a tax app outside the official site; DJP says Coretax activation happens only on its official site.Direktorat Jenderal Pajak, Kementerian Keuangan

Frequently asked questions
Do corporate tax officers need a brevet?
No rule requires every company tax officer to hold a brevet. Brevet is tax training run by professional associations and course providers such as IAI and IAPI, and many vacancies list it as a plus. Acting as a taxpayer's proxy (kuasa) or as a tax consultant is regulated separately, by PMK 44/2026 and PMK 55/2026.
Does the USKP tax consultant exam still exist after PMK 55/2026?
Until 31 December 2026. PMK 55/2026 Article 60 says certification by the old organising committee, known as USKP, runs until that date. From then on, competence is shown by a Certificate of Competence (SKK) from a competency test run by the Ministry of Finance's education and training unit. Old tax consultant certificates count as an SKK for up to two years from issue.
Can a tax officer with a brevet represent the company as its tax proxy?
Yes, until 31 December 2026; from 1 January 2027 a brevet alone no longer qualifies someone to be a proxy. PMK 44/2026 Article 16 says a person other than a tax consultant who holds a brevet certificate, or a tax diploma of at least D3 from an A-accredited university, may be appointed as a proxy until 31 December 2026. From then on, proxies other than tax consultants and family members need a Certificate of Registration (SKT) under PMK 55/2026.
Does Coretax have an app I need to download?
No. DJP announcement PENG-50/PJ.09/2025 says Coretax accounts are activated only on the official site coretaxdjp.pajak.go.id, so do not download apps from links sent by message. DJP officers never ask for OTP codes, passwords, passphrases, or access to your device or tax account. Report suspicious messages through DJP's official channels.
What is the risk if my manager asks me to issue a tax invoice with no real transaction?
It is a criminal risk. Article 39A of the General Tax Provisions Law, inserted by Law 28/2007, makes it a criminal offence to knowingly issue or use a tax invoice, withholding slip or payment slip that is not based on a real transaction. Refuse the instruction in writing, keep the evidence and seek legal advice.
Can a recruiter charge me for tax training to get hired?
No. Kemnaker lists requests for administration, training or uniform fees before hiring as a sign of a fake vacancy, and Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 bars licensed job portals from charging job seekers. If you want to take a brevet course, enrol directly with the provider, not through a recruiter who promises a job.
