How to become an accountant in Indonesia: CA and CPA, the state register and pay

Professional accountants in Indonesia pass the IAI CA or IAPI CPA exam and join the Ministry of Finance register. Titles sold without an exam are scams.

Summary

Professional requirements: State register of accountants; public accountant licence for audits Low scam risk
  • Law 34/1954 protects the title 'akuntan': anyone may do accounting work, but only entitled people listed on the state register may use the title.
  • Under Ministerial Regulation PMK 216/2017, a registered accountant must pass a professional exam, join an association, hold a tax ID and have at least three years of practice.
  • The Chartered Accountant (CA) exam is run by IAI, while the public accountant (CPA) exam is run by IAPI under Law 5/2011.
  • Only public accountants licensed by the Minister of Finance may audit financial statements, and the licence lasts five years (Law 5/2011, Articles 3 and 5).
  • There is no legitimate way to buy the title, a CA certificate or a civil-service post; refuse any request for money to get hired.

What is an accountant, and what does an accountant do in Indonesia?

An accountant prepares, reviews and explains financial statements so they follow Indonesian Financial Accounting Standards (SAK), designs accounting systems and internal controls, and gives management analysis for decisions. Unlike accounting staff, who mostly record transactions, an accountant carries professional responsibility for the result. As a title, 'akuntan' belongs to registered accountants (Akuntan Beregister) who pass a certification exam such as the IAI's CA, while public accountants also hold a Minister of Finance licence for audits (Law 5/2011, Articles 3 and 5).

  • Prepare and review financial statements under Indonesian Financial Accounting Standards (SAK).
  • Design and oversee accounting systems, budgets and internal controls.
  • Analyse complex transactions such as revenue recognition, leases and financial instruments.
  • Prepare or review company tax calculations with the tax team.
  • Lead the monthly and annual close and explain the results to management.
  • Support external auditors and follow up audit findings.
  • Coach accounting staff and review the entries they post.

How do you become a chartered accountant in Indonesia?

The usual route is a bachelor's degree (S1) or D4 in accounting, then a professional exam such as the IAI Chartered Accountant (CA). The title 'akuntan' is protected by Law 34/1954. To join the register, PMK 216/2017 Article 2 requires proof of passing a professional accounting exam, association membership, at least three years of accounting practice and a tax ID. Becoming a public accountant needs a separate Minister of Finance licence.

What does a typical accountant job description look like?

Accountant ads usually ask for an accounting degree, several years of experience, a solid grasp of SAK and the ability to lead the month-end close; senior roles often list a CA or CPA certificate as a plus. The description below is written in our own words from common ad patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button. Certificates strengthen an application but do not replace work experience.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • A bachelor's degree (S1) or D4 in accounting; some vacancies ask for the professional accounting programme (PPAk).
  • A Chartered Accountant (CA) certificate from IAI or a CPA from IAPI is a plus, especially for senior roles.
  • Several years of experience in an accounting department or a public accounting firm.
  • Working knowledge of SAK and of the tax rules that apply to the business.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills and experience with accounting software or ERP.
  • Careful, honest and able to keep financial data confidential.

How much does an accountant earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not yet have accountant pay data that meets our standard: there are no verified vacancies with enough samples and no official pay scale for private-sector accountants. Accountants who join the civil service are paid by grade. The floor is still the minimum wage: Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24 forbid pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service.

Which education route leads to becoming an accountant?

The most common route is an S1 or D4 in accounting, followed by the professional accounting programme (PPAk) or straight to a professional exam. Under Education Ministry Regulation 153/2014, PPAk is a post-bachelor programme run by universities with IAI, and students from other majors need basic accounting competence. PMK 216/2017 counts a completed PPAk as one year of practice for the register.

How is an accountant different from accounting staff?

Accounting staff record transactions, reconcile accounts and prepare routine reports, often with a D3 or vocational school background. An accountant is responsible for the accuracy of the financial statements, accounting policies and internal controls, and usually holds a bachelor's degree and a professional certificate. The elucidation of Law 34/1954 says anyone may do accounting work, but only entitled people may use the title 'akuntan'.

How do you become a public accountant, and when is the licence needed?

You need a public accountant licence to provide assurance services, such as an audit or review of financial statements, to clients. Law 5/2011 Article 3 reserves those services for public accountants, and Article 6 requires a certificate of passing the public accountant exam, practical experience, a tax ID and membership of an association designated by the Minister. IAPI runs that exam at a basic level and a professional level.

What does an accountant's career path look like?

In companies, accountants usually move from senior accountant to supervisor or accounting manager, then head of finance or controller. At public accounting firms, the ladder runs from junior auditor to the partner who signs audit reports and must hold a public accountant licence. Government accountants enter through civil-service selection, for example as auditors. Registered accountants with a CA and a practising accountant licence from the Minister of Finance can found or join an accounting services firm (PMK 216/2017 Article 6).

What is a registered accountant and how do you register?

A registered accountant (Akuntan Beregister) is a person listed on the state register of accountants kept by the Minister of Finance (PMK 216/2017 Article 1). According to IAI, registering through IAI requires an IAI Chartered Accountant (CA) certificate, at least three years of accounting practice, a tax ID and full (Anggota Utama) membership of IAI. Teaching accounting, or completing PPAk, a master's or a doctorate in accounting, can count towards part of that experience (PMK 216/2017 Article 2, paragraphs 4 to 6).

The register certificate is issued by the Ministry of Finance. According to IAI, since 10 March 2022 it has been issued electronically with an electronic signature that can be checked on the government document verification service. Registration is not unconditional: Article 4 requires registered accountants to stay members of an association, keep their competence through continuing professional education and follow the code of ethics.

A registered accountant who wants to offer non-audit accounting services to the public, such as bookkeeping or compiling financial statements, through an accounting services firm (Kantor Jasa Akuntan) needs a practising accountant licence. Under PMK 216/2017 Articles 6 and 7, the Minister of Finance grants it for five years.

Which accounting certifications exist in Indonesia?

A 2024 Ministry of Finance announcement names three accounting associations and their certificates:

  • Chartered Accountant (CA) from the Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (Ikatan Akuntan Indonesia, IAI). According to IAI, CA is the designation for members who meet every requirement of a professional accountant, and IAI runs the certification exam.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from Institut Akuntan Publik Indonesia (IAPI). According to IAPI, the public accountant exam has a basic and a professional level, and the pass certificate needed for a licence requires experience auditing financial statements at a public accounting firm.
  • Certified Professional Management Accountant (CPMA) from Institut Akuntan Manajemen Indonesia (IAMI), for the management accounting route.

None of these replaces a degree. Professional exams generally require at least a D4 or bachelor's degree in accounting, or a non-accounting graduate who meets the competence set by the association (PMK 216/2017 Article 5, paragraph 3).

What are SAK and PSAK, and who writes them?

Indonesian Financial Accounting Standards (Standar Akuntansi Keuangan, SAK) set the rules for preparing financial statements. According to IAI, SAK consists of the statements (PSAK) and interpretations (ISAK) issued by IAI's Financial Accounting Standards Board and Sharia Accounting Standards Board, and has converged with IFRS. There are several pillars:

  • General SAK for entities with public accountability, such as listed companies.
  • SAK for Private Entities, effective since 1 January 2025, for entities without public accountability that publish general-purpose financial statements.
  • SAK EMKM, effective since 1 January 2018, a simplified standard for micro, small and medium enterprises.

Government Regulation 43/2025 on Financial Reporting created a Financial Reporting Standards Committee that will set Financial Reporting Standards. Under Article 47, standards set by the accounting association remain in force until the committee issues new ones. If you apply for an accountant role, expect questions on the PSAK used most often in that industry.

Can Indonesian accountants build a career abroad?

Yes, but qualifications do not automatically travel across borders. Three routes we verified:

  • ASEAN CPA. According to IAI and IAPI, ASEAN countries signed a mutual recognition arrangement on accountancy services in 2014. IAI CA or IAPI CPA holders can apply to become an ASEAN CPA, but may not sign audit reports or other licensed reports in the host country unless separately agreed.
  • ACCA. According to ACCA, its qualification combines exams, an ethics module and three years of practical experience. It is a foreign qualification, not an Indonesian licence or register entry.
  • CPA Australia. IAPI has a dedicated membership pathway to CPA Australia for Indonesian CPA holders at professional level.

In the other direction, foreign accountants can only join the Indonesian register or obtain a public accountant licence where there is a mutual recognition agreement between governments (PMK 216/2017 Article 3; Law 5/2011 Article 7). Be wary of courses that sell a foreign qualification as a licence to work in Indonesia.

Which accounting career suits you?

Accounting has several entry points. If you are a vocational school or D3 graduate and want to start with bookkeeping, read our accounting staff guide. If you are drawn to checking reports and controls, read the auditor guide, including the BPK, BPKP and inspectorate routes. If you prefer tax rules and Coretax, read the tax officer guide. If you want to analyse financial statements for business or investment decisions, read the financial analyst guide; if you want to start in banking services, read the bank teller guide.

How do you check a vacancy and a title claim before applying?

  1. Match the vacancy with the company's official careers site or Kemnaker's Karirhub.
  2. Check the company's full legal name on AHU through the service below. Do not rely on a business identification number (NIB) printed in an ad, because we found no public NIB search on OSS.
  3. If a recruiter claims to be a public accountant or uses a public accounting firm's name, ask for the full name and licence number and check them against the directory published by IAPI with the Ministry of Finance.
  4. If someone claims to be a registered accountant, ask for the electronic register certificate and check its electronic signature on the government document verification service; for a CA certificate, ask IAI directly.
  5. Do not send an ID photo, bank account number or selfie before a formal interview and an employment agreement.
  6. Refuse every request for money, then check the ad with the job checker or report it through official channels.

What interview questions might you be asked for accountant jobs?

Interview questions for accountant jobs often cover accuracy with figures, the accounting software or spreadsheets you use, handling discrepancies, what you would do if asked to change figures, and reporting deadlines. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

How do you make sure the figures in a report are right?

Why they ask: Financial reports drive important decisions, so accuracy comes first.

How to answer: Explain your steps: reconciling with transaction evidence, cross-checking between reports and keeping a traceable record of changes.

Which accounting software or spreadsheets have you used?

Why they ask: The company wants to know how quickly you can work with its systems.

How to answer: Name the programs and tasks, such as journals, bank reconciliations or summary tables. If you have not used their system, explain how you learn a new one.

Tell me about a time you found a discrepancy or a recording error.

Why they ask: How you trace a discrepancy shows persistence and honesty.

How to answer: Use the STAR pattern. Describe how you traced the cause, documented the correction and reported it to your supervisor.

What would you do if you were asked to change figures without a clear basis?

Why they ask: This tests integrity, which matters in finance.

How to answer: Say you would ask for supporting documents, refuse to falsify records and raise the matter through the company's proper channel.

How do you organise your work before month-end closing or a reporting deadline?

Why they ask: Closing periods are busy and deadlines are fixed.

How to answer: Describe your checklist, a schedule worked back from the deadline and the work you prepare early.

How do you keep up with changes in tax rules or accounting standards?

Why they ask: Rules change often and mistakes can lead to penalties.

How to answer: Name the official sources you follow, the training you take and an example of a change you applied at work.

What job scams target accountants?

The most damaging scams aimed at would-be accountants are requests for money to get hired, promises of a civil-service accountant or auditor post and offers to buy a title or certificate without an exam. Kemnaker lists requests for administration, training or uniform fees as a sign of a fake vacancy. Also watch for requests for your ID photo, bank account number or a deposit of your own money, which the financial regulator OJK flags as common scam openings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an accountant, a registered accountant and a public accountant?

In job ads, accountant describes a professional accounting post, but the Indonesian title akuntan is protected by Law 34/1954 and reserved for entitled people listed on the state register. A registered accountant (Akuntan Beregister) is listed on the state register of accountants kept by the Minister of Finance under PMK 216/2017. A public accountant holds a Minister of Finance licence to provide assurance services such as audits under Law 5/2011, and must pass the public accountant exam to get it (Article 6).

Does an accounting degree automatically let me use the title 'akuntan'?

No. Law 34/1954 says only entitled people may use the title, and accountants register their names on the state register. Under PMK 216/2017, to become a registered accountant you need to pass a professional accounting exam, join a professional association, hold a tax ID (NPWP) and have at least three years of practice. Completing PPAk counts as one year of experience.

Is ACCA or CPA Australia an accounting licence in Indonesia?

Not automatically. ACCA and CPA Australia are foreign professional qualifications. Law 5/2011 Article 7 only opens a licence to foreign public accountants where there is a mutual recognition agreement between governments, and PMK 216/2017 Article 3 applies the same principle to the state register. The pathway we found runs from IAPI to CPA Australia membership for Indonesian CPA holders, not the other way.

How long does a public accountant licence last?

Under Law 5/2011 Article 5, the Minister of Finance grants the licence for five years from the date it is issued, and it can be renewed. If it lapses without renewal, the person is no longer a public accountant and may not provide assurance services. Public accountants must also keep their competence through continuing professional training (Article 25).

Can a recruiter charge me a fee to be hired as an accountant?

No. The Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) lists requests for administration, training or uniform fees as a sign of a fake vacancy, and Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 bars licensed job portals from charging job seekers. Civil-service selection is also free according to the civil service agency BKN. CA or CPA exam fees are paid directly to the official organiser, never through a recruiter.

Can a registered accountant certificate be declared invalid?

Yes. Under PMK 216/2017 Article 4, registered accountants must stay members of an association, keep their competence through continuing professional education and follow the code of ethics. A 2024 Ministry of Finance announcement confirms that if the association revokes the certification or membership, the certificate can be declared invalid, which can also affect a practising accountant licence.
