What does event crew do in Indonesia, and what do event organiser staff do?

Event organiser (EO) staff plan and run events: they draw up the concept, run-down and budget, choose venues, manage vendors, handle permits and then oversee the dress rehearsal through to the end of the event. Event crew and ushers work on site, for example at guest registration, guiding participants and loading equipment. The SKKNI events standard (Kepmenaker 120/2024) covers these units, including crowd management and event safety.

  • Draw up the event concept, run-down and budget with the client.
  • Find and coordinate venues, vendors, performers and sponsors.
  • Handle event permits and coordination with the venue manager.
  • Manage the guest list, guest registration and participant check-in.
  • Supervise load-in, stage and booth set-up and load-out of equipment.
  • Lead the dress rehearsal and keep the event on its run-down.
  • Apply the crowd management plan and event safety procedures.
  • Prepare the event report, financial report and evaluation.
  • As an usher or crew member: welcome guests, guide participants and help things run smoothly on site.

What do you need to work as event organiser staff or event crew?

Event work is not a licensed profession, so no licence is required. Crew and usher ads usually accept senior high or vocational school graduates, while planner and coordinator posts usually ask for a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree and experience. Legitimate requirements relate to the job, such as communication and readiness to work nights. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 point 2 prohibits employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment.

What does a typical event organiser job description look like?

Event organiser ads usually name the kind of events handled, such as weddings, concerts, exhibitions or corporate meetings (MICE), then the duties, irregular working hours and whether pay is monthly or per event. We wrote the description below ourselves from common ad patterns; it is not a vacancy from any event organiser. Before accepting an offer, make sure the employer's name, the fee and the payment date are clearly written down.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • Senior high or vocational school for crew and ushers; a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree for planners and event coordinators.
  • Ability to work under pressure with irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Good communication with clients, vendors and guests.
  • Event or committee experience is an advantage.
  • For ushers: friendly, quick to help guests and following the event dress code.

How much do event organiser staff and event crew earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not show pay figures specific to event organiser staff or crew yet, because no official data or dated survey meets our standard. Permanent staff are usually paid monthly, while crew and ushers are often paid by the day or per event. For employees, PP 36/2021 Article 23 bars pay below the minimum wage. For daily workers, the wage must be written in the daily work agreement (PP 35/2021).

What education path leads to event organiser work?

Many people enter events through committee experience, then study at a vocational school or take tourism, communication or management at college. For proof of competence, the SKKNI standards for events (Kepmenaker 120/2024) and MICE (Kepmenaker 123/2024) are used as the basis for testing, and on 8 October 2026 the BNSP directory listed a MICE certification body with an active licence and schemes such as liaison officer, registration and event logistics.

How are event crew employed, and how are they paid per event?

Event crew often work as daily workers. PP 35/2021 Article 10 provides daily work agreements for work of fewer than 21 days a month; if you work 21 days or more for three consecutive months, the agreement becomes a permanent contract (PKWTT) by law. Article 11 requires daily agreements to be in writing and state the wage and rights, including social security. Wages are paid at the agreed time (PP 36/2021 Article 55).

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How is safety at large events regulated?

Large events bring crowd, electrical and working-at-height risks. PP 60/2017 requires organisers of public gatherings to hold a police permit, applied for at least 14 working days before a local event. The SKKNI events standard includes units on setting a crowd management plan and on building and managing the event's safety, security and health system. Ask for a safety briefing before you start work.

How do wedding organisers, entertainment events and MICE differ?

Wedding organisers handle weddings and often work at weekends with the client's family. Entertainment organisers run concerts and festivals with large crowds. MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions; the MICE competency standard (Kepmenaker 123/2024) includes units such as developing exhibition designs, coordinating guest registration and handling event permits.

What happens if an event organiser fails to pay?

A failure to pay can stop an event and hurt everyone working on it. In July 2023, the Karanganyar police chief said a concert at De Tjolomadoe was cancelled because the organiser had not settled its obligations to the sound-system vendor and other vendors, even though the event permit had been issued; ticket buyers and food stall tenants lost out too. For crew, the lesson is clear: ask for a written agreement, ask who pays you (the event organiser or a vendor) and record your working hours.

What should you check before accepting a per-event job?

Per-event offers often arrive suddenly by chat. Before you say yes, check the following:

  1. The employer's name, and its company name can be checked on AHU.
  2. The duties, hours, location and dress code are written down clearly.
  3. The fee, payment method and payment date are written in an agreement or official message; you can use the CariTalent free event-talent contract (not lawyer-reviewed) as a starting point.
  4. There is no casting, registration, training or uniform fee.
  5. For guest-welcoming and promotion work, also read the CariTalent guide to SPG and usher work.

What interview questions might you be asked for event organiser staff jobs?

Interview questions for event organiser staff jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Can you walk me through your portfolio and your role in each piece?

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.

How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.

How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.

How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.

How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?

Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

How do you follow trends without breaking copyright or platform rules?

Why they ask: Copyright or platform breaches can get accounts blocked.

How to answer: Explain that you use your own or licensed material, give credit and check platform rules before posting.

How do you juggle several projects with different deadlines?

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.

How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What event crew and usher job scams should you watch for?

Watch for a casting, registration or uniform fee to become an usher or crew member: the Ministry of Manpower names requests for money for administration, training or uniforms as a sign of a fake vacancy. Beware of castings that ask you to change clothes too: in December 2024 East Java police described a talent-casting scheme in which would-be models were filmed by a hidden camera while changing. Another risk is not being paid after the event.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an usher and a brand promoter (SPG)?

Ushers welcome and guide guests, handle registration and help an event run smoothly. Brand promoters (SPG or SPB) promote and sell products for a brand. Both are often hired per event through an agency or event organiser, so make sure you know who the employer is, how much you will be paid, when you will be paid and what the job really involves before you accept.

Can usher ads require a certain height or an attractive appearance?

Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment, and age limits are allowed only for work whose nature genuinely affects a person's ability to do it. Appearance, height or marital status requirements unrelated to the job should be questioned. Read our guide to recruitment discrimination.

When should event crew be paid?

If you work as a daily worker, PP 35/2021 requires the daily work agreement to be in writing and state the wage. PP 36/2021 Article 55 says wages are paid at the agreed time, and the payment period may not exceed one month. Ask for the payment date in writing before the event, and keep proof of attendance and your messages.

Do I need a certificate to work for an event organiser?

It is not compulsory, because event work is not a licensed profession. A competency certificate can help: the SKKNI standards for events (Kepmenaker 120/2024) and MICE (Kepmenaker 123/2024) are the basis for competency tests, and the BNSP directory lists a MICE certification body with schemes such as liaison officer, registration and event logistics. Check any certificate on the BNSP website.

What can I do if an event organiser does not pay me?

Claim payment in writing from the employer, with the agreement, attendance records and messages as evidence. If you are a daily worker, a rights dispute must first go through bipartite negotiation for up to 30 working days (Law 2/2004 Article 3) and can then be registered with the local manpower office. If it was fraud from the start, for example you were asked to pay, report it to the police through SPKT or call 110.

Do organisers of large events need a permit?

Yes. PP 60/2017 Article 5 requires organisers of public gatherings and community activities that may endanger public security to hold a police permit. Under Article 6, the application is due at least 14 working days before a local event, 21 working days before a national-scale event and 30 working days before an international-scale event.
