Waiters and waitresses (pramusaji) in Indonesia: duties, pay and applying safely

Waiters and waitresses (pramusaji) serve restaurant and cafe guests in Indonesia. A waitress ad that asks you to keep guests company is a red flag.

Summary

Low scam risk
  • Waiters and waitresses greet guests, take orders, serve food and drinks, and set and clear tables.
  • Waiting staff vacancies usually ask for an SMA/SMK certificate and willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Normal working time under PP 35/2021 is 40 hours a week, and work beyond that must be paid as overtime.
  • Japan suspended new Certificates of Eligibility for the SSW food service field from 13 April 2026.
  • A waiter or waitress vacancy that asks for a uniform or admin fee before you start should be treated as a likely scam.

What does a waiter or waitress do in Indonesia?

Waiters and waitresses (pramusaji) look after guests in restaurants, cafes and hotels from arrival to departure: they greet them, show them to a table, explain the menu, take orders and serve food and drinks. Waiting staff also set and clear tables, deal with simple complaints and often help prepare the bill. In hotel restaurants or event catering, the job can include setting tables for banquets.

  • Greet guests, show them to a table and explain the menu.
  • Take orders on paper or in an app and pass them to the kitchen or bar.
  • Serve food and drinks in the right order and to the house standard.
  • Set tables before guests arrive and clear them after they leave.
  • Handle simple complaints and call a supervisor when needed.
  • Help prepare bills and take payment when asked.
  • Keep the dining area, serving tools and service station clean.

What do you need to become a waiter or waitress in Indonesia?

Waiting tables is not a licensed profession, so no licence is required. Vacancies usually ask for an SMA/SMK certificate, a friendly manner and willingness to work shifts. An ad that wants only women or only men needs a lawful, job-related reason: Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment, and Law 13/2003 Article 5 and its elucidation guarantee equal opportunity regardless of sex.

What does a typical waiting staff job description look like?

Ads for waiting staff usually look for friendly, quick people ready to work shifts, to serve guests, take orders and keep the dining area clean. In hotels, banquet waiting staff serve dinners and weddings, often as daily workers (DW) called in per event. In hospitals, waiting staff usually deliver patients' meals from the nutrition unit according to the diet menu set by the nutritionist. Check whether the ad states the shift pattern, daily or monthly pay and who covers meals on duty.

  • A senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) certificate; hospitality or catering majors are often a plus.
  • Friendly, polite and able to talk with guests.
  • Willing to work shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods and carry trays.
  • Basic English is a plus for hotel restaurants or foreign guests.

How much do waitresses and waiters earn in Indonesia?

No pay data specific to waiting staff meets our standard yet, so that row in the table reads Not enough data. The floor is clear: under Government Regulation (PP) 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24, workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city. Restaurants classed as micro or small businesses are exempt (Article 36). Ask in writing whether you receive anything on top of basic pay, such as a service charge share.

Which education routes lead to waiting work?

The usual route for waiting staff is SMA or SMK, especially hospitality or catering, then on-the-job training. The Hotel SKKNI (Kepmenaker 125/2024) includes units on providing food and beverage service and serving food, and the SKKNI for small restaurants (Kepmenaker 104/2024) includes serving customers to a high standard. Tests are run by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP, and Skillhub vocational training charged trainees nothing as of 7 October 2026.

Can you work as a waiter or waitress abroad?

Official routes for waiting staff abroad exist, but restaurant work in Japan is currently limited. Restaurant service falls under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) food service field, and the Immigration Services Agency of Japan suspended new Certificates of Eligibility (COE) for that field from 13 April 2026. As of 10 September 2026, ISA was only processing applications received by 31 January 2026. For other destinations, go only through a licensed agency (P3MI) or KP2MI and check vacancies on SISKOP2MI.

Which work rights should waiting staff check?

Waiting staff often work on fixed-term contracts (PKWT) and long shifts. Under PP 35/2021, normal working time is 40 hours a week (Article 21), overtime is capped at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week (Article 26) and must be paid (Article 27), and a PKWT may not include probation (Article 12). Daily hotel workers may be on daily contracts only for work of fewer than 21 days a month; 21 days or more for 3 consecutive months makes the job open-ended (PKWTT) by law (Article 10). Your employer must register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15).

What is the career path for a waiter or waitress?

Experienced waiting staff can usually move up to captain or head waiter, then restaurant supervisor and assistant manager. In hotels, the path can continue into banqueting or food and beverage management, and some move into bartending or cruise ship work through licensed companies. English skills and a competency certificate from a certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP help when applying to larger hotels or restaurants.

What interview questions might you be asked for waiter or waitress jobs?

Interview questions for waiter or waitress jobs often cover food hygiene and safety, working through busy periods, handling guest complaints, shift work, and teamwork. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Which job scams target waiters and waitresses, including nightclub work?

Fee tricks still appear: applicants are asked to pay for a uniform, training or admin before starting, although the Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. More dangerous are waitress ads for cafes, karaoke bars or nightclubs that turn out to require keeping guests company or working as a song guide (LC). On 4 February 2025 Central Java Police uncovered a human trafficking case (Law 21/2007) in which a woman working as a restaurant waitress was forced to serve guests and told to pay before she could leave.

Where can you find safe waiter and waitress vacancies?

Look for waiting staff vacancies on restaurants' or hotels' official careers sites, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and local manpower office (Disnaker) job fairs. Make sure the interview takes place at a restaurant or office with a clear address, and ask for the shift pattern, pay and overtime rules in writing. Never pay to take part in a selection. Frequently asked questions

Are waiters and waitresses entitled to overtime pay when the restaurant is busy?

Yes. Under PP 35/2021 Article 27, an employer who makes staff work beyond normal hours must pay overtime. Article 28 requires an instruction from the employer and the worker's written or digital consent, and Article 26 limits overtime to 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, not counting overtime on weekly rest days or public holidays.

Can a restaurant hire only women as waitresses, or ask for good looks or single status?

Not without a lawful, job-related reason. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment; it does not list sex or appearance, but the elucidation of Law 13/2003 Article 5 refers to equal job opportunity regardless of sex, and Article 6 guarantees equal treatment. If an ad accepts only one sex or asks for attractive looks without explanation, you can report it to the local manpower office (Disnaker) and read our hiring discrimination guide.

Can you still work as a waiter or waitress in Japan through the SSW scheme?

For new applicants from outside Japan, only to a very limited extent. The Immigration Services Agency of Japan (ISA) suspended new Certificates of Eligibility (COE) for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) food service field from 13 April 2026, and as of 10 September 2026 it was only processing applications received by 31 January 2026. Check ISA's official site before paying for a language course or signing anything.

Do I have to pay placement fees to work abroad as a waiter or waitress?

Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) may not be charged placement costs. KP2MI Ministerial Regulation 17/2025 makes the employer bear placement costs by default, and you may be charged only costs written and itemised in your Placement Agreement (Perjanjian Penempatan). Any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.

What is the difference between a waiter, a waitress and a pramusaji?

In daily work there is none. Pramusaji is the Indonesian term, while waiter and waitress are English words that once marked a man or a woman; Indonesian job ads use all three for the same job of serving guests, taking orders and serving food. Because the work is the same, an ad that accepts only one sex needs a lawful reason.
