Entry-level mining workers in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely

Entry mining work for school leavers: helper, checker, plant operator, site admin. A recruiter who makes you pay for a medical check is suspect.

Summary

Very high scam risk
  • Entry-level mining jobs include helpers, checkers, crusher or plant operators, fuel and tyre crew, site admins and camp crew, at mining companies and their contractors.
  • Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 requires safety training for new workers and a pre-employment medical by a doctor the company appoints.
  • Manpower Regulation 18/2024, Article 51, says placement costs are borne by the employer when it recruits workers directly.
  • Labour market centre data: green and green-potential mining posts on Karirhub in 2025 had the top applications-per-opening ratio among sectors with 50 or more openings.
  • A request to pay for a medical check-up, psychological test, training, a flight or a mess deposit before you are hired is a sign of a fake vacancy.

What do entry-level mining workers do in Indonesia?

Entry-level mining workers keep operations running in the pit, on haul roads, at processing plants and in camp. Helpers assist mechanics or operators, checkers record trips and loads, crusher or plant operators run processing units, fuel and tyre crews look after equipment, site admins handle data and camp crews run the mess. All work under operational supervisors, whom Ministerial Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 says the mine's technical head appoints to inspect and test operations.

  • Assist mechanics, operators or field crews as a helper: prepare tools, clean work areas and move light materials.
  • Record truck trips, loads, equipment hours or output as a checker in the pit, on haul roads, at the stockpile or at the port.
  • Run and monitor crushers, conveyors or processing units according to procedure and the supervisor's instructions.
  • Refuel equipment as a fuelman, or inspect and change mine vehicle tyres as a tyreman.
  • Handle site administration: attendance, daily reports, production data and contractor files.
  • Take part in safety induction, pre-shift safety meetings and work-area inspections.
  • Support camp and mess services: kitchen, cleaning, laundry and daily supplies.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near misses or damaged equipment to the supervisor.

What do you need to work at a mine with a high school diploma?

Entry-level mining ads usually ask for a senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) diploma, a passed pre-employment medical and willingness to live in a mess on a roster. Once hired, Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 requires safety training for new workers, and Law 1/1970, Article 9, requires the employer to explain hazards, safeguards and protective equipment to every new worker before work starts. These entry roles are not licensed professions, and the basic safety training comes from the company.

What does a typical mining job ad in Indonesia look like?

A clear mining job ad names the position, site location, roster pattern, mess facilities and the actual employer: the company holding the mining permit or a mining services contractor. The description below is written by us from common ad patterns and is not a vacancy from any company. A genuine ad asks for no fees, does not keep your original diploma and gives an office address you can check.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • Senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK); SMK mechanical, automotive, electrical or mining graduates are often preferred for helper and plant roles.
  • Passing the pre-employment medical arranged by the company.
  • Willingness to live in a mess (company housing) and work a roster at a remote site.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights.
  • For site admin roles: good spreadsheet skills and careful recording of production data.
  • A driving licence (SIM) for the vehicle class if the job includes driving.
  • Experience is a plus; many helper posts accept applicants with no experience.

Skills

Safety awareness (K3), Following procedures, Physical stamina, Recording production data, Basic spreadsheets, Teamwork, Radio communication, Basic equipment care, Living independently in a mess.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)

How much do mining workers earn in Indonesia?

In their first year, mining workers must get at least the minimum wage where the site is (the provincial UMP, or a regency or city UMK where set), under Government Regulation 36/2021, Articles 23 and 24; micro and small businesses are exempt and pay an agreed wage above a set floor (Article 36). KarirAman does not yet have mining-worker pay data that meets our standards. For remote sites, Decree KEP.234/MEN/2003 says long working-day patterns already include fixed overtime.

Which education and training routes lead to mining work?

The closest route is an SMK in mechanical, automotive, electrical or mining geology, followed by training at a government vocational centre (BLK or BPVP). For plant operators, the national competency standard for coal processing (Ministerial Decree 320/2020) covers units such as crushing, sizing, washing and stockpile management, which licensed BNSP certification bodies can assess. New-worker safety training is given by the company after you are hired, not sold as a paid package to apply.

How do mining companies and contractors hire workers?

Many entry-level mining jobs are hired by mining services contractors rather than the permit holder. Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 says a contractor's site operations manager answers to the mine's technical head. Make sure your employment agreement names the company that employs you. Manpower Regulation 18/2024, Article 49, requires a written employment agreement before work starts, and Article 48 requires a pre-placement orientation when a company recruits from outside its province.

How do rosters and working hours work at a mine?

Remote mine sites may use long working days under Ministerial Decree KEP.234/MEN/2003, listed as in force by the Ministry of Manpower's legal database. Those patterns must use a 2 to 1 work-to-rest ratio, no more than 14 consecutive working days and at least 5 paid rest days. The company must give at least 30 days' notice of a change to the working pattern. Ask for the roster and mess arrangements to be written into your employment agreement.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How do you move up from helper to operator, mechanic or supervisor?

From helper or checker, common routes are heavy equipment operator after training and a licence, mechanic after workshop experience, or safety officer, whose skills are set out in the national mining safety competency standard (Ministerial Decree 5/2023). To become a supervisor, Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 requires an operational supervisor certificate (POP, POM or POU) registered with the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal, or a certificate or qualification recognised by the Chief Mine Inspector.

What safety and medical rules apply at Indonesian mines?

Mine safety rules apply from your first day. Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 on good mining practice sets out:

  • Medical examinations: a pre-employment check before a new worker is accepted, a periodic check at least once a year (twice a year for underground workers), special checks matched to exposure risks and a final check before employment ends. A workplace examining doctor appointed by the company carries them out.
  • Safety training for new workers, workers moving to new tasks, hazard training and annual refresher training.
  • Operational supervisors who are certified and endorsed to oversee work in their areas.

Law 1/1970 on Work Safety also applies at mines. Article 9 requires the employer to explain hazards and safe ways of working to new workers, and Article 14 requires required personal protective equipment to be provided free of charge. Employers must also register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011, Article 15), and the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan work accident programme (JKK) covers accidents and illness caused by the work environment.

How competitive are mining vacancies?

Very competitive, at least for green vacancies listed on Karirhub. The labour market centre's 2025 report on green job vacancies puts mining and quarrying at the highest ratio of applications per opening among sectors with at least 50 openings. The figure covers only green and green-potential vacancies on Karirhub, not all mining jobs, and the base of openings is small.

Competition this tight is exactly what scammers selling a "fast track" exploit. No paid route is legitimate: Manpower Regulation 18/2024, Article 51, puts placement costs on the employer when it recruits directly.

How do you apply for a mining job safely?

  1. Look for the same vacancy on the official careers page of the company or its contractor, or on Karirhub.
  2. Check the company (PT) name on AHU and make sure test invitations come from a company-domain e-mail.
  3. Ask who your employer will be (the permit holder or a contractor) and get a written employment agreement before you travel.
  4. Refuse requests for money for a medical check-up, psychological test, training, ticket, mess, uniform or protective equipment.
  5. Send copies of your diploma only; show the original and take it home.
  6. If the job asks for a police clearance certificate (SKCK), get it yourself through official channels; see Panduan Warga police clearance (SKCK) guide.

What interview questions might you be asked for mining worker jobs?

Interview questions for mining worker jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Which machines, equipment or engineering software have you operated?

Why they ask: The company wants to know how quickly you can work safely on its line or site.

How to answer: Name the machines or tools, how long you used them, the basic maintenance you did and any certificate you actually hold.

How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?

Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.

How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.

What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?

Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.

How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.

How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?

Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.

How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.

Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?

Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.

How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.

How do you stay healthy and safe doing heavy work at remote sites?

Why they ask: Remote sites make help harder to reach.

How to answer: Mention rest, drinking water, protective equipment and working in pairs. Before travelling, get the contract, pay, housing and transport in writing, and keep your own identity documents.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

Kompas TV (official statement via media)Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (Sekretariat Satgas PASTI)Koran Jakarta (official statement via media)

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What fake mining job scams should you watch for in Indonesia?

One reported pattern is a promised mine job on another island with staged requests for money. According to Sungkai Selatan police in North Lampung (Liputan6, 18 June 2026), a resident promised mine work in Mimika, Papua, was asked for transfer after transfer while departure kept being postponed; the suspect was caught by the victim's family and handed to the police. Refuse fees for medical checks, tests or training. The Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly fraud.

Where can you find safe mining job vacancies?

Safe mining vacancies are on the official careers pages of mining companies or their contractors, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal, vocational school job centres and local labour offices (Disnaker). Check the company name on AHU, make sure the recruiter's e-mail uses the company domain, and call the head office if in doubt. KarirAman does not yet list verified mining vacancies, so do not trust anyone claiming to be our partner.

Frequently asked questions

Can a high-school graduate with no experience get a mining job in Indonesia?

Yes, for entry roles such as helper, checker, camp crew or site admin, which often accept senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) graduates. Competition is fierce: the Ministry of Manpower's labour market centre found that green and green-potential mining vacancies on Karirhub in 2025 had the highest applications-per-opening ratio among sectors with at least 50 openings, though the base is small. You still have to pass a pre-employment medical and the new-worker safety training required by Ministerial Decree 1827 K/30/MEM/2018.

Who pays for the medical check-up for a mining job?

Examining new workers' health is the employer's duty: Law 1/1970 on Work Safety, Article 8, requires the employer to have the health of workers it will accept examined, and Decree 1827 says a doctor appointed by the company does the examination. Manpower Regulation 18/2024, Article 51, puts placement costs on the employer when it recruits directly. A recruiter who tells you to pay for a check-up at a clinic of their choice before the interview is using a scam pattern that East Jakarta's labour office warned about in August 2026.

What does a 2:1 roster mean at an Indonesian mine?

A 2:1 roster means the work period is twice as long as the rest period. Ministerial Decree KEP.234/MEN/2003 lets energy and mineral-resources companies in remote areas use long working days, with a work-to-rest ratio of 2 to 1, no more than 14 consecutive working days and at least 5 rest days with wages still paid. Travel from home to site that takes 24 hours or more counts as working time.

Can women apply for mining jobs in Indonesia?

Yes, for the entry roles on this page in open-pit mines, processing plants, site offices and camps; we do not cover the rules for underground work. Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans discrimination in recruitment, so an ad that accepts only one gender without a clear job-related reason is worth questioning. For night shifts, Law 13/2003, Article 76, requires employers to provide nutritious food and keep women workers safe from 23.00 to 07.00, and to provide transport from 23.00 to 05.00.

How is a mining worker different from a heavy equipment operator?

The mining worker roles on this page are entry jobs that need no operator licence, such as helper, checker, supervised plant operator, fuel and tyre crew and site admin. Heavy equipment operators drive excavators, dump trucks or dozers, and their job ads almost always ask for an operator licence. Many operators start as helpers or checkers and then take formal training. Our heavy equipment operator guide covers the licence rules and how to check them.
