What does an interior designer do?
An interior designer plans indoor spaces so they work well, are safe and fit the budget: laying out floor plans and circulation, choosing materials and finishes, creating 3D visuals, preparing working drawings, then seeing the work through with builders and furniture workshops. Indonesia's Interior Design standard (Decree 17 of 2024) sets out units from pre-design, design concepts, working drawings and material specifications to managing project schedules, costs and quality.
- Measuring rooms and learning the client's needs, style and budget.
- Drawing up floor plans, circulation and zoning.
- Creating design concepts, material boards and 3D visuals for presentations.
- Preparing working drawings and furniture details for builders and workshops.
- Choosing materials, finishes and lighting, then writing their specifications.
- Estimating project costs and preparing price quotations.
- Supervising work on site with carpenters, laminate (HPL) workshops and suppliers.
- Recording design changes and completing the project handover.
How do you become an interior designer in Indonesia?
Interior designers in Indonesia usually hold a diploma or bachelor's degree in interior design, with a portfolio and skill in drawing and 3D visualisation software. In construction services, for example at a design consultancy or interior contractor, Construction Services Law 2/2017 Article 70(1) requires a construction competency certificate (SKK). Director General of Construction Decree 114/2024 sets junior, intermediate and principal interior designer jobs at levels 7 to 9.
- Licence or certificate
- Construction competency certificate (SKK) for interior design (for designers in construction services)

What does a typical interior designer job description look like?
Interior designer ads usually name the project types, such as homes, offices, cafes or hotels, the drawing and rendering software in use, site visit duties and a portfolio request. At design-and-build firms, designers often meet prospective clients and prepare price quotations too. We wrote the description below ourselves from common ad patterns. Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment.
General example, not a vacancy

How much does an interior designer earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not yet show a pay figure for interior designers because no data meets our standard. If you are an employee, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3) bars pay below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt and set wages by agreement (Article 36), so ask about the studio's size. Get base pay, commission and targets written into your contract.

Which study routes lead to interior design work?
The most common route is a diploma or bachelor's degree in interior design. Vocational school (SMK) students can take the KKNI level III Interior Design and Furniture Engineering scheme or the beginner interior design drafter occupational scheme on the Directorate of SMK's list. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists an actively licensed interior design certification body with schemes such as interior design drafter and junior interior designer for new graduates.

How does an interior designer work with builders and furniture workshops?
On site, an interior designer turns working drawings into real work: re-measuring rooms, explaining details to carpenters and laminate (HPL) workshops, checking material samples and recording changes. Indonesia's national standards for Interior Works Implementers and Interior Works Supervisors (Manpower and Transmigration Ministry Decrees 308 and 342 of 2013) still apply to these site roles. Record every design change in writing so its cost and responsibility are clear.
How can a freelance interior designer avoid clients who do not pay?
Before starting, ask for a written contract covering scope, number of revisions, down payment, payment stages, deadlines and the right to use the drawings, then hand over final working files once the matching payment arrives. Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 36 says copyright in commissioned work belongs to its maker unless agreed otherwise. Self-employed workers must register themselves with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 16(1)), for example as non-wage-earner (BPU) members.
What are the stages of an interior design project, and what should you agree on?
Interior projects usually run in several stages. The table summarises the output of each stage and what you should agree in writing, whether you are an employee or a freelancer. The order and names of stages differ between companies.
| Stage | Output | Agree in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Survey and pre-design | Room measurements, needs, style and initial budget | Survey fee, if any |
| Design concept | Floor plan, material board and 3D visuals | Number of revisions included in the price |
| Working drawings and budget | Technical details, material specifications, cost plan | Right to use the drawings and payment stages |
| Construction | Coordinating builders, workshops and suppliers; quality control | How changes to the work and their cost are recorded |
| Handover | Snag list and final documentation | Defects period after handover |
If you set up your own design practice, business registration and tax are explained in the Panduan Warga guide to NIB on OSS and the Panduan Warga Coretax guide.

What interview questions might you be asked for interior designer jobs?
Interview questions for interior designer jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.
How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.
How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?
Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.
How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.
How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?
Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.
How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.
How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.
Which software do you know, and what is your workflow from brief to final file?
Why they ask: A clean workflow keeps projects on time and easy to hand over.
How to answer: Name your software, the steps from understanding the brief to export, and how you name and store file versions.
Common questions that also come up (12 questions)

-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
-
When can you start?
Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
-
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

What scams target interior designer job seekers?
Schemes that hurt interior designers include design tests that are full designs for a real client's home or shop without pay, designer-sales vacancies that offer only commission with no clear employment status, and clients who do not pay after receiving the drawings. Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 36 says copyright in commissioned work belongs to its maker unless agreed otherwise. The Ministry of Manpower names any request for money during recruitment as a sign of a fake vacancy.

Where can you find safe interior designer vacancies?
Look for interior designer vacancies on the official careers sites of design consultancies, interior contractors, property developers and furniture makers, and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. A fair process asks for a portfolio and an interview, sometimes a short test with clear limits. Check the company on AHU before sending personal documents, and ask for a written contract stating base pay, commission and your status. KarirAman has no verified interior designer vacancies yet.

How is an interior designer different from an architect, a CAD drafter or a graphic designer?
An architect designs the whole building, from its form to its spatial layout. An interior designer plans the indoor space: layout, materials, furniture and lighting. A CAD drafter draws technical details from the designer's direction. A graphic designer creates visual communication such as logos and promotional material. Director General of Construction Decree 114/2024 groups interior design jobs with landscape architecture and lighting, separate from architect jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Does an interior designer in Indonesia need a certificate?
It depends on where you work. Interior designers working in construction services, for example at a design consultancy or interior contractor, must hold a construction competency certificate (SKK) under Construction Services Law 2/2017 Article 70(1), obtained through a competency test. Anyone's SKK status can be checked on LPJK's construction workforce search page. Outside construction services, BNSP certificates are optional.
Is it normal to do a design test without pay?
A short test with a reasonable deadline is common in hiring, such as a concept sketch for one room. Be suspicious of requests for a full design, working drawings or renders for a real client's home or shop with no contract. Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 40(1)(f) lists drawings among protected works of fine art, and Article 36 says copyright in commissioned work belongs to its maker unless agreed otherwise.
What about interior designer vacancies that pay only commission?
First ask about your status: employee or partner. If you are an employee, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3) bars pay below the minimum wage, but micro and small businesses are exempt and set wages by agreement (Article 36). Pay may be agreed per unit of output (Articles 14 and 18), and compliance is then judged on the average of the last 12 months' pay (Article 19). Ask for the base pay, commission and targets to be written into your employment contract.
Which software do employers usually ask for?
Interior designer ads usually ask for CAD drawing software for floor plans and working drawings, 3D modelling software such as SketchUp or 3ds Max, and rendering tools, including real-time renderers for quick presentations. Many vacancies also ask you to prepare cost estimates in a spreadsheet. Use licensed software or a legitimate education version for your portfolio.
Can an interior designer vacancy require an attractive appearance?
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. When the circular was announced, the Minister singled out attractive-appearance and marital-status requirements as discriminatory practices (reported by Kontan). An interior designer's skill can be judged through a portfolio, a reasonable short test and an interview. If an ad sets such conditions, see KarirAman's guide to discrimination in recruitment.
