Translators and interpreters: duties, sworn translators, rates and applying safely

Translators work with documents and interpreters with speech. Sworn translators are appointed by the Minister of Law; other translators need no licence.

What do translators and interpreters do in Indonesia?

Translators render written text, such as documents, contracts, websites, subtitles, comics or games, while interpreters convey speech at meetings, conferences, factories or industrial estates. Indonesia's general text translator standard (Kepmenaker 203/2021) includes units such as capturing the source text's message, choosing translation techniques and producing a quality target text. Both can work as employees or freelancers. Only sworn translators are appointed and sworn in by the Minister of Law (Permenkum 4/2025).

  • Translating documents, contracts, reports or websites from one language into another.
  • Interpreting at meetings, training sessions, factory inspections or industrial-estate meetings.
  • Creating or translating video subtitles and localising comic or game text.
  • Building glossaries so a project's terminology stays consistent.
  • Proofreading and editing your own or other translators' work.
  • Keeping clients' documents and conversations confidential.
  • Managing deadlines, rates and revisions when freelancing.

What do you need to become a translator in Indonesia?

Translator ads usually ask for command of two languages, sample translations and a degree in languages or in a field related to the texts. Ordinary translators need no licence. Only sworn translators are appointed by the Minister of Law; under Permenkum 4/2025 the requirements include being at least 25 years old, holding at least a D-IV or bachelor's degree and being declared competent in sworn-translator certification by an LSP.

What does a typical translator job description look like?

Translator ads usually state the language pair, the type of text or workplace, such as an office, a factory or a project in an industrial estate, and whether the role is full-time, contract or freelance. The description below is written by us from common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any company. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 point 2 prohibits employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. Age limits require the special circumstances and conditions in point 3.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • Strong command of two languages, written for translators and spoken for interpreters.
  • A bachelor's degree in languages or in a field related to the texts translated.
  • Some ads ask for proof of language ability, such as HSK, JLPT or TOPIK.
  • Sample translations or a portfolio.
  • Accuracy, research skills for terminology and discipline with deadlines.
  • For on-site interpreters at industrial sites, willingness to work at remote locations under contract.

Skills

Two-language fluency, Terminology research, Formal Indonesian writing, Consecutive interpreting, Simultaneous interpreting, Translation tools, Editing, Confidentiality, Deadline management.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)

How much do translators earn or charge in Indonesia?

Translators who are employees must earn at least the local minimum wage if they have less than one year of service (Government Regulation 36/2021, Articles 23 and 24). For freelancers, the translators' association HPI points to the government's cost standard per finished page as one reference, but the actual rate is whatever translator and client agree. KarirAman does not yet have translator pay data that meets our standard.

Which education and certification paths lead to translation work?

The usual path is a degree in literature or language education, but fluent graduates of other fields can translate technical texts in their own field. The work has national standards: general text translation, conference interpreting (Kepmenaker 198/2021) and sworn translation (Kepmenaker 23/2021). The Indonesian Translators Association (Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia, HPI), founded in 1974, also runs a national certification test for its members.

Can Indonesian translators work abroad safely?

Yes, through official routes such as Japan's Gijinkoku status (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services), which covers translation and interpreting; graduates are exempt from the three-year experience rule, and pay must equal a Japanese worker's. On costs, Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Regulation P2MI 17/2025 makes the employer bear them and allows only costs written and itemised in the placement agreement, and any other request for money is a red flag.

What is a sworn translator, and how do you become one in Indonesia?

A sworn translator (penerjemah tersumpah) is appointed and sworn in by the Minister of Law, registered with the ministry and fully responsible for their translations. Permenkum 4/2025 requires, among other things, Indonesian citizenship and residence and a competency certificate from an LSP; once appointed, sworn translators must belong to a professional organisation. Applications go online through the AHU directorate's site with the official state fee, followed by yearly reports. The standard covers legal texts and personal documents.

What should a freelance translation or on-site interpreting contract cover?

For freelance work, agree in writing on the language pair, deadline, rate, number of revisions, confidentiality and payment date before you start. If a factory or smelter hires you as an employee on a fixed-term contract (PKWT), Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 12 bans probation, and Article 15 requires compensation when a PKWT ends after at least one month of service. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires the employer to register you with BPJS.

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How do you spot a dangerous translator job offer abroad?

Language skills open official routes abroad, but they are also used as bait. The warning signs match the overseas online-scam jobs and human trafficking patterns:

  1. The country is Cambodia, Myanmar or Thailand. Indonesia has no placement agreement with these countries.
  2. You are asked to travel as a tourist, with the ticket paid, and told the contract will follow.
  3. The recruiter names no licensed placement agency (P3MI) that you can check on SISKOP2MI.
  4. You are asked for money that is not written and itemised in the placement agreement.
  5. On arrival, the employer asks to "keep" your passport.

Law 21/2007 defines trafficking in persons to include recruitment by deception for exploitation, including forced labour, and the victim's consent does not stop prosecution. If you or a family member has already left, contact the official channels below. Prepare a valid passport through the Panduan Warga passport guide only for offers you have checked.

How do you start freelancing as a translator safely?

Start with a short portfolio in the fields you know well, then offer your services through professional networks or platforms that use escrow. A freelance platform we checked holds the client's payment until the project is finished as agreed. Keep records of every project, invoice and payment so tax reporting is easy; the Panduan Warga Coretax guide explains the annual return. If you plan to run a translation business, learn how business registration works first. See also KarirAman's guide to safe freelancing.

What interview questions might you be asked for translator jobs?

Interview questions for translator jobs often cover your portfolio and your role in each piece, taking feedback, assessing results against a brief, using creative work responsibly, and juggling several projects. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Republika (official statement via media)

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.

Questions for this field

Can you walk me through your portfolio and your role in each piece?

Why they ask: In creative work, your portfolio is the main proof of skill.

How to answer: Pick three to five pieces that fit the vacancy, explain the part you did yourself and the results where you have them.

How do you handle revisions or criticism of your work?

Why they ask: Revisions are a normal part of creative work.

How to answer: Describe clarifying what the feedback means, agreeing priorities and deadlines, then revising without taking it personally.

How do you measure whether content or a campaign worked?

Why they ask: Companies want measurable results, not just good-looking work.

How to answer: Name the goal you set at the start, the measures you tracked such as reach, engagement or sales, and what you learned.

How do you follow trends without breaking copyright or platform rules?

Why they ask: Copyright or platform breaches can get accounts blocked.

How to answer: Explain that you use your own or licensed material, give credit and check platform rules before posting.

How do you juggle several projects with different deadlines?

Why they ask: Creative workers often handle many clients or campaigns at once.

How to answer: Describe your work calendar, how you set priorities and how you warn people early when a deadline must move.

Which software do you know, and what is your workflow from brief to final file?

Why they ask: A clean workflow keeps projects on time and easy to hand over.

How to answer: Name your software, the steps from understanding the brief to export, and how you name and store file versions.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

Republika (official statement via media)Kompas TV (official statement via media)detikFinance

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

Kompas TV (official statement via media)Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (Sekretariat Satgas PASTI)Koran Jakarta (official statement via media)

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What scams target translators and interpreters?

The most dangerous are well-paid office or digital job offers in Cambodia, Myanmar or Thailand. Indonesia has no placement agreement with these countries, and the Foreign Ministry brought home 1,203 Indonesian victims of online-scam syndicates from Myanmar between February and July 2026. Also turn down translator or admin offers there, paid tests or memberships before any project, and unpaid trial translations of whole documents.

Where can you find safe translator vacancies?

Look for translator vacancies on official company careers sites, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and campus job fairs. HPI runs a member directory for prospective clients. For freelance projects, choose platforms that hold the client's payment until the work is done. For jobs abroad, match the vacancy and agency on SISKOP2MI. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?

Translators work with written text; Indonesia's sworn-translator regulation (Permenkum 4/2025) even defines a translation as a written rendering. Interpreters work orally. The national conference interpreting standard (Kepmenaker 198/2021) covers consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and sight translation, plus a code of ethics and occupational safety.

Do all translators in Indonesia need to be sworn?

No. Only sworn translators are appointed and sworn in by the Minister of Law under Permenkum 4/2025; other translators need no licence to work. If an agency or embassy asks for a translated document, check whether it requires a sworn translation before you order or produce one.

Which language tests help when applying for translator jobs?

For Chinese, HSK is moving from six levels to a framework of three stages and nine levels, with translation skills tested at the advanced levels. For Japanese, the JLPT runs from N5 to N1, with N1 the hardest. For Korean, the general test is TOPIK, which differs from the EPS-TOPIK used for the work route. KarirAman's language test guide explains how to register safely.

Can a client ask for a free translation test?

A short test to judge quality is normal, but keep it to a short extract and do not translate a whole document without a contract. Never pay to take a test or unlock projects. OJK notes that job scammers ask for payment up front, and Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam.

Are translator jobs in Cambodia or Myanmar safe?

No. The government says Indonesia has no placement agreement with Cambodia, Myanmar or Thailand. The migrant worker protection ministry (KP2MI) says syndicates exploit visa-free tourist entry to Cambodia to recruit Indonesians into online fraud operations. The Foreign Ministry brought home 1,203 Indonesian victims of online-scam syndicates from Myanmar between February and July 2026. Turn such offers down and report them.

Is there a civil service track for translators?

Yes. The government regulates the civil-service functional position of translator through Permen PANRB 16/2023, amended by Permen PANRB 5/2026 in force since 5 May 2026. Civil service vacancies, when opened, are announced and filed through the BKN's SSCASN portal. Do not trust anyone who promises a translator post for money.
