What does an AI engineer do?

An AI engineer builds features and systems that use AI models, such as chat assistants, document search, classification or process automation. The work covers choosing and connecting models, including large language models (LLMs), preparing supporting data and knowledge, writing integration code, evaluating output, then deploying and monitoring the system so it stays reliable, safe and affordable to run. Unlike a prompt engineer, who focuses on writing and testing instructions for models, an AI engineer also writes the code and deploys the system.

What do you need to become an AI engineer in Indonesia?

AI engineering is not a licensed profession. Employers usually judge your programming, machine learning basics, data processing and how you evaluate model output. The closest national standard is SKKNI Keahlian Artificial Intelligence Subbidang Knowledge Based System (Decree 103 of 2026), covering solution architecture, data labelling, generative models, fairness and privacy, and deployment. There are also standards for Data Science (Decree 299 of 2020) and Data Management (Decree 268 of 2020). BNSP certification is optional.

What does a typical AI engineer job description look like?

AI engineer vacancies usually ask for programming experience, an understanding of machine learning, experience integrating models through APIs, data processing, and the habit of testing and monitoring systems. How much does an AI engineer earn in Indonesia?

We do not show an AI engineer pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data, or an official role-level pay scale. If you are an employee, employers may not pay you below the minimum wage (Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3)); it is the reference for less than one year of service, after which pay follows the wage structure and scale (Article 24). Which education routes lead to AI engineering?

The most common route is a degree in informatics, computer science or electrical engineering, followed by deeper machine learning through projects, a master's or training. Government training is available through Komdigi's Digital Talent Scholarship and the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists AI Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer schemes at actively licensed bodies, but a certificate does not replace a code portfolio.

Is prompt engineering a real job, and how does it differ from AI engineering?

Not entirely: writing and testing prompts is one skill within AI engineering, not a separate competency standard. The Knowledge Based System standard (Decree 103 of 2026) lists it as one of 27 units, alongside integration, evaluation and maintenance. As of 8 October 2026 no SKKNI is titled prompt engineer or AI specialist. Which rules should AI engineers in Indonesia know?

As of 8 October 2026, the AI ethics reference in force is Communications Minister Circular 9/2023 on AI Ethics, which lists values such as inclusivity, security, transparency, accountability and personal data protection. On 3 September 2026 Komdigi said two draft presidential regulations on the AI roadmap and AI ethics awaited the President's signature; as of 8 October 2026 neither was listed on JDIH BPK. Law 27/2022 Article 10 also gives a right to object to automated decisions.

What does an AI engineer's career path look like?

Many AI engineers start as software developers, data scientists or machine learning engineers. The usual path moves from junior AI engineer to AI engineer, senior, then lead or AI solution architect who designs systems across products. Other routes are model evaluation and safety, MLOps, or AI product management. Explaining model risks to business users matters at every level.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

    What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

    What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

    What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

    What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

    What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Where can you find safe AI engineer vacancies?

Look for AI engineer vacancies on official company careers pages and the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. A sound AI engineer selection usually asks you to build or fix a small model-based feature, then explain how you test its output, including wrong or harmful answers. An AI trainer or annotator posting that asks for a deposit is not recruitment. Check the company in the AHU register and do not install apps from a recruiter's link. Does an AI engineer need to build models from scratch?

Not always. Much AI engineering work uses existing models, then adapts them, adds knowledge and tests them. The national Knowledge Based System standard (Decree 103 of 2026) includes units on adapting generative models, injecting knowledge and evaluating generative model output. You still need machine learning basics to judge when a model's output is good enough and when it is not.

I was offered a work-from-home AI training job but must pay a deposit first. Is that normal?

No. Genuine data labelling or evaluation work pays you, not the other way round. OJK's anti-scam task force describes online task jobs that pay a little at first, then ask for deposits for further missions with a promise of getting the money back plus a reward, until the scammer disappears. Stop contact, keep evidence, and report to OJK's anti-scam centre and the police if you have sent money.

Who owns the code and AI systems I build at work?

Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 40 lists computer programs as protected works, and under Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, the maker of a work created in employment holds its copyright. Your employment agreement can say otherwise, so read the clauses on ownership of code, models and data before signing, and do not put company data or code in your portfolio without permission.

Does a paid AI certificate or course guarantee a job?

No certificate guarantees a job. BNSP competency certificates are optional and can be checked on the BNSP website. A course is not a placement agency: licensed private placement agencies may not charge job seekers placement fees, except for certain positions (Manpower Regulation 18/2024 Article 11), and private training institutions may no longer run special job exchanges (Articles 14 and 84). Consumer Protection Law 8/1999 Article 9 bars offers containing uncertain promises.

Can an AI engineer vacancy set a maximum age?
