Forklift operators in Indonesia: duties, K3 licence (SIO), classes, pay and safe hiring

Forklift operators in Indonesia need a competence certificate and a K3 licence (SIO) for their operator class. Beware paid courses that promise a job.

Summary

Professional requirements: Competence certificate and K3 operator licence (often called SIO) High scam risk
  • Manpower Ministerial Regulation 8/2020 splits forklift, reach stacker and telehandler operators into class II (up to 15 tonnes) and class I (above 15 tonnes).
  • A class II operator needs at least junior secondary school, a minimum age of 19, one year assisting in the field, a competence certificate and a K3 licence.
  • The K3 licence lasts five years, is applied for by the employer, and is valid only while you work for the company that applied for it.
  • Operators must check the forklift and its safety devices before use, and may stop the machine if a safety device is faulty.
  • Do not trust training that guarantees a job; the Ministry of Manpower's vocational training through Skillhub charges participants nothing.

What does a forklift operator do?

A forklift operator lifts, moves, loads and stacks palletised goods in warehouses, factories, distribution centres and ports using counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks or reach stackers. Article 67 of Manpower Ministerial Regulation 8/2020 classes forklifts, lift trucks, reach stackers and telehandlers as transport equipment (pesawat angkut). Daily work also includes checking the machine before use, keeping to marked lanes and logging operating hours and faults.

  • Check the forklift before use: brakes, horn, lights, reversing alarm, chains and forks, tyres, oil, and battery or fuel.
  • Lift, move and stack pallets in warehouses, production areas or on the quayside following work instructions.
  • Load and unload trucks or containers with the brakes on and the load balanced.
  • Stack goods on high racking with a reach truck or reach stacker within the machine's capacity.
  • Keep to marked lanes and speed limits and keep a safe distance from pedestrians and other machines.
  • Log operating hours, machine use and faults, and report them to the technician or supervisor.
  • Help with stock counts and goods checks together with warehouse admins and checkers.

Do forklift operators in Indonesia need an SIO licence, and what else?

Under Article 153 of Manpower Ministerial Regulation 8/2020, a class II forklift operator needs at least junior secondary school, at least one year assisting in the field, a doctor's fitness statement, a minimum age of 19, a competence certificate and a K3 licence. Class I needs senior high school or equivalent, two years' experience and a minimum age of 20. That K3 licence is what people on the floor usually call the SIO.

What does a typical forklift operator job description look like?

Forklift operator ads usually state the machine type (counterbalance, reach truck or reach stacker), its capacity, the warehouse or industrial estate, the shift pattern and whether you need an SIO. The description below is written by us from common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any company. Gender, age, appearance or marital status must not be requirements unless there is a genuine job-related reason.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

How much does a forklift operator earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not yet have forklift operator pay data that meets our standards; the table below shows only a BPS group reference and the minimum wage. Under Government Regulation 36/2021 as amended by GR 51/2023, Article 23(3) bans employers from paying below the minimum wage, and Article 24(1) applies the minimum wage to workers with less than one year of service. Before you sign, ask for written details of base pay, allowances, overtime pay and shifts.

What training do you need to become a forklift operator?

There are three common routes: government vocational training at BLK or BPVP centres through the ministry's Skillhub portal, which charges nothing and for some courses awards an SIO after the test; accredited private training institutes (LPK); or training by the employer. The national standard is the SKKNI for lifting, transport and rigging operations (Manpower Ministerial Decree 180/2024), with units on preparing, operating and reporting forklift operations.

What is the difference between class II and class I forklift operators?

A class II operator may run forklifts, lift trucks, reach stackers and telehandlers with a capacity of up to 15 tonnes, while a class I operator may run machines above 15 tonnes and supervise and guide class II operators (Regulation 8/2020, Article 165). Under Article 154, a class II operator with senior high school can move up to class I after two continuous years in the class and passing the operator test.

What safety checks should you do on a forklift before use?

Article 165 of Regulation 8/2020 requires operators to check the machine, its safety devices and its accessories before work, and lets them stop a machine whose safety devices are faulty. The same regulation bans straightening or welding bent forks and lengthening forks with add-ons (Article 77), requires forklift forks to be at most 15 cm off the floor when travelling (telehandlers and reach stackers excepted), and bans using a forklift for anything except lifting, carrying and placing loads (Article 85).

What are working conditions and rights like for forklift operators?

Forklift operators usually work shifts in warehouses or factories. Article 21 of Government Regulation 35/2021 sets working time at 40 hours a week, and Article 26 caps overtime at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, with overtime pay. Article 14 of Law 1/1970 requires employers to provide protective equipment free of charge. Combustion-engine forklifts must not be used in enclosed rooms or areas with explosive materials (Regulation 8/2020, Article 82).

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What should you check before paying for a forklift course?

A legitimate forklift course means your training money is not wasted. We cover the general K3 licence rules for other lifting and transport equipment in our heavy equipment operator guide. For forklifts, check the following before you sign up:

  1. Make sure the class on offer fits you: class II needs at least junior secondary school, age 19 and one year's experience; class I needs at least senior high school, age 20 and two years' experience (Regulation 8/2020 Article 153).
  2. Ask which type and capacity of machine you will practise on. A class II operator is only authorised for machines up to 15 tonnes (Article 165).
  3. Type the institute's name into the Temukan Mitra service on Skillhub and note its accreditation status.
  4. Ask for the name of the testing body (LSP) up front, match it against BNSP's directory, then enter your competence certificate number on BNSP's certificate check page after you pass.
  5. To make sure your record exists, use the personnel search on the ministry's TemanK3 portal with your full name and date of birth.
  6. Pay only into an account in the institute's name and ask for an official receipt for every payment.

What is the career path for a forklift operator?

Many forklift operators start as a warehouse helper loading and unloading goods, then take training and a competency test to become a class II operator. Article 154 of Regulation 8/2020 lets operators with senior high school move up to class I after two continuous years in class II and passing the test. From there, common paths are warehouse team leader or supervisor, or moving to cranes and other heavy machines through the heavy equipment operator route, which has its own requirements and classes.

What interview questions might you be asked for forklift operator jobs?

Interview questions for forklift operator jobs often cover getting goods or passengers there safely and on time, damaged or wrong deliveries, safety at work, difficult recipients, and shifts or long journeys. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

How do you make sure goods or passengers arrive safely and on time?

Why they ask: Punctuality and safety are the core of this work.

How to answer: Explain how you plan routes or schedules, check the vehicle or load and tell people straight away about delays.

What do you do if goods are damaged, lost or sent to the wrong place?

Why they ask: How you report it shows honesty and responsibility.

How to answer: Say you report it at once, photograph the condition of the goods and follow company procedure rather than hiding it.

How do you put safety first at work?

Why they ask: Accidents on the road, at sea or in a warehouse can be fatal.

How to answer: Name real habits: enough rest, protective equipment, vehicle checks, no phone while driving and correct lifting technique.

How do you deal with a recipient who is not there or who is angry?

Why they ask: This happens every day and must be handled by procedure.

How to answer: Explain how you contact the recipient, follow the company's redelivery rules and stay polite.

Are you ready for shifts, long trips or changing schedules?

Why they ask: Much logistics and transport work does not follow office hours.

How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the schedule, rest time, any meal or lodging allowance and how overtime is recorded. Get it in writing.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • You are asked to pay for a test, a psychological test, a medical check-up, training or a uniform, or to book tickets and a hotel through an appointed agent with a promise of reimbursement.

What to do: Do not transfer anything. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate recruitment does not charge applicants.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target forklift operators?

Watch out for SIO courses that promise a job, SIO cards offered without an exam, and brokers who ask for money to get you into a factory. Article 159 of Regulation 8/2020 requires a competence certificate before a K3 licence is issued. In July 2025 the Metro Bekasi police arrested the people behind a fake job placement agency (LPK) in Cikarang Utara that promised jobs at particular companies and collected administration fees; no victim was ever called to work.

Where can you find safe forklift operator vacancies?

Look on companies' official careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal or the local labour office's job fair. Check the company's registered name in AHU and make sure test invitations come from a company e-mail domain. Article 51 of Manpower Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 says that when employers recruit directly, they bear the placement costs, so you do not need to pay to be hired. Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for forklift lanes and parking in a warehouse?

Article 81 of Regulation 8/2020 requires forklift runways to be strong, level and marked, without sharp bends or steep slopes. Article 84 requires a side clearance of at least 60 cm for one-way traffic and 90 cm for two-way traffic. When not in use, a forklift is parked on level ground with the brakes locked and the forks resting on the floor (Article 85(2)). Tell your supervisor if the lanes at your workplace do not meet these rules.

Does my forklift SIO move with me when I change employer?

Not automatically. Article 163 of Regulation 8/2020 says the K3 licence is valid only while the holder works for the company that applied for it. If you move before it expires, your new employer applies to have it changed. The competence certificate from the certification body (LSP) stays in your name, so keep copies safe.

Can a school leaver with no experience become a forklift operator straight away?

Rarely straight away. For class II, Article 153 of Regulation 8/2020 expects at least one year assisting in the field before you run a machine yourself. The usual way in is a warehouse helper or checker post working alongside operators, followed by training and a competency test. Paid crash courses that promise to put you straight in the operator's seat deserve suspicion.

How do I check a forklift training provider (LPK)?

Search for the institute in the Temukan Mitra service on the ministry's Skillhub portal, which filters by operating status and accreditation. Ask which certification body (LSP) will test you and check it in BNSP's directory, then check your certificate number on the BNSP website after you pass. The ministry's TemanK3 portal also has a K3 personnel search by full name and date of birth.

Is Regulation 8/2020 still in force for forklift operators?

Yes, except for three provisions. Manpower Ministerial Regulation 11/2026 on labour inspection procedures, in force since 3 July 2026, revokes Article 1 point 5, Article 141(4) and Article 173(3) of Regulation 8/2020, which deal with specialist K3 labour inspectors and who examines and tests equipment. The operator requirements, classes and K3 licence rules cited on this page are not among the revoked provisions.

Do forklift operators have to buy their own safety boots and PPE?

No. Article 14(c) of Law 1/1970 on work safety requires the employer to provide all required personal protective equipment free of charge. A company that tells you to buy your own safety boots, helmet or vest as a condition of the job is not meeting that duty. Ask about it before you sign a contract.
