Couriers in Indonesia: duties, licence, pay, partner status and applying safely
Parcel couriers in Indonesia need a SIM C licence and a motorbike; check if you are an employee or a partner. Paying a deposit to start is a red flag.
Summary
- Couriers pick up and deliver parcels on a route, update status in an app and collect cash on delivery (COD) payments.
- Motorcycle couriers must hold a SIM C licence, available from age 17 under Law 22/2009 Articles 80 and 81.
- Many courier vacancies offer partner (mitra) status rather than employment, so ask in writing about minimum wage and BPJS.
- Independent workers, including partner couriers, can register themselves with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan as non-wage earners (BPU).
- A courier vacancy that asks for a deposit, a gear fee or your original vehicle ownership book (BPKB) as a guarantee is suspect.

What does a courier do in Indonesia?
Couriers (kurir) pick up and deliver parcels on a daily route, make sure the recipient and address are correct, and update the delivery status in an app. Couriers also collect cash on delivery (COD) payments, return parcels that could not be delivered and keep their vehicle roadworthy. Most parcel couriers in cities ride motorcycles, while larger shipments go by box van.
- Load parcels at the depot or pick-up point according to the assigned route.
- Deliver parcels and make sure the address and recipient are correct.
- Update delivery status in the app, including a photo or signature as proof.
- Collect cash on delivery (COD) payments and pay them in according to procedure.
- Pick up parcels from sellers or customers.
- Return undeliverable parcels with a note of the reason.
- Look after the vehicle and equipment so they are safe to use.
How do you become a courier in Indonesia?
Motorcycle couriers must hold a SIM C licence. Law 22/2009 on Road Traffic and Transport, Article 77, requires every driver to hold a licence for the type of vehicle, Article 80 sets SIM C for motorcycles, and Article 81 sets a minimum age of 17. Box vans with a permitted weight up to 3,500 kilograms need a SIM A. Vacancies also usually ask for your own motorbike and a smartphone.
What does a typical courier job description look like?
Courier vacancies in Indonesia usually look for people with a SIM C licence, a motorbike and a smartphone who know the area and can meet daily delivery targets, to pick up, deliver and update parcels. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any delivery company, so there is no apply button.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- A valid SIM C licence for motorcycles; for box vans, a SIM A.
- Your own motorcycle with valid registration (STNK); some vacancies provide a vehicle.
- A smartphone for the delivery app.
- A junior or senior high school certificate (SMP, SMA or SMK); some vacancies ask for no particular certificate.
- Knowledge of the delivery area and readiness to work outdoors with daily targets.

Navigation and local knowledge, Safe riding, Time management, Honesty with COD cash, Customer service, Using apps, Reading addresses carefully.
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)
How much does a courier earn in Indonesia?
No courier-specific pay data meets our standard yet, so that row in the table reads Not enough data. The floor is clear: under Government Regulation (PP) 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24, workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city. That rule applies within an employment relationship (Law 13/2003 Article 1 point 15). Partner couriers are usually paid per parcel, so work out your net income after fuel, phone credit and motorbike upkeep.

Which education routes lead to courier work?
Couriers need no special education; what is required is the right licence. Law 22/2009 Article 77 says driving competence can be gained through training or self-study, and Article 81 requires passing the tests. The competency standard for deliveries is the postal and courier SKKNI (ministerial decree 354/2014), which includes a unit on making deliveries. Ministry of Manpower vocational training on Skillhub charged trainees nothing as of 7 October 2026.
What is the difference between an employed courier and a partner courier?
An employed courier works in an employment relationship, based on an employment agreement involving work, wages and instructions (Law 13/2003 Article 1 point 15), so the minimum wage rules apply and the employer must register them with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15). Partner couriers are usually paid per parcel. If the company does not register you, you must register yourself (Article 16), for example as a BPJS Ketenagakerjaan non-wage earner (BPU).
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What is the career path for a courier?
Couriers with a good record can usually move up to route coordinator, courier team leader or operations staff at a sorting hub. With a SIM A or SIM B I licence, a motorcycle courier can move to box van or truck delivery. Field experience is also useful for warehouse administration or customer service roles at logistics companies.
How does an office messenger differ from a parcel courier?
Office or bank messengers carry documents, letters and files between offices, to banks or to government offices, not online shoppers' parcels. These posts are often filled through outsourcing companies; under PP 35/2021 Article 18, the outsourcing company is responsible for the outsourced worker's pay and protection. They usually need a SIM C, a motorbike and honesty, because messengers often carry important documents or cash, so ask for written rules on who is liable if a document or money goes missing.
What interview questions might you be asked for courier jobs?
Interview questions for courier jobs often cover getting goods or passengers there safely and on time, damaged or wrong deliveries, safety at work, difficult recipients, and shifts or long journeys. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field
How do you make sure goods or passengers arrive safely and on time?
Why they ask: Punctuality and safety are the core of this work.
How to answer: Explain how you plan routes or schedules, check the vehicle or load and tell people straight away about delays.
What do you do if goods are damaged, lost or sent to the wrong place?
Why they ask: How you report it shows honesty and responsibility.
How to answer: Say you report it at once, photograph the condition of the goods and follow company procedure rather than hiding it.
How do you put safety first at work?
Why they ask: Accidents on the road, at sea or in a warehouse can be fatal.
How to answer: Name real habits: enough rest, protective equipment, vehicle checks, no phone while driving and correct lifting technique.
How do you deal with a recipient who is not there or who is angry?
Why they ask: This happens every day and must be handled by procedure.
How to answer: Explain how you contact the recipient, follow the company's redelivery rules and stay polite.
Are you ready for shifts, long trips or changing schedules?
Why they ask: Much logistics and transport work does not follow office hours.
How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the schedule, rest time, any meal or lodging allowance and how overtime is recorded. Get it in writing.
Which driving licence do you hold and what is your driving experience?
Why they ask: The licence type decides which vehicles you may drive.
How to answer: State your licence type honestly, how long you have driven and the vehicles you usually drive. Show original documents only for checking.

The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.
What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target courier applicants?
A common trick is a partner-courier sign-up that demands a deposit or payment for a jacket, helmet, bag or device before you start delivering. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. Some recruiters also demand your original BPKB or diploma as a guarantee, although Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from holding original personal documents as a guarantee for work.

Before signing, ask in writing whether you will be an employee or a partner, how pay is calculated and who pays for BPJS. Do not hand over your BPKB, original diploma or money. Frequently asked questions
Are partner (mitra) couriers entitled to the minimum wage?
The minimum wage is set for workers in an employment relationship, meaning one based on an employment agreement that involves work, wages and instructions (Law 13/2003 Article 1 point 15; PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24). If you are offered a partnership agreement, ask in writing how pay is calculated and what is deducted, then work out your net income after fuel, phone credit and motorbike upkeep.
Can a delivery company hold my motorbike's ownership book (BPKB)?
Not as a guarantee for work. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding a worker's original personal documents as a guarantee, and it names the vehicle ownership book (BPKB) and diplomas explicitly. If you are asked to hand it over, politely refuse, keep evidence and report it to the local manpower office (Disnaker).
What is the minimum age to work as a motorcycle courier?
The minimum age for a SIM C motorcycle licence is 17 under Law 22/2009 Article 81(2). You also need an ID card (KTP), physical and mental fitness, and to pass the tests. Any other age limit in an ad needs a job-related reason, because Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment and allows age requirements only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability.
Do couriers get BPJS in Indonesia?
Independent workers can join BPJS Ketenagakerjaan as non-wage earner participants (Bukan Penerima Upah, BPU) through official BPJS Ketenagakerjaan channels and partner outlets. Law 24/2011 Article 16 requires anyone who is not an employer, a wage-earning worker or a contribution-assistance recipient to register themselves. Keep proof of your membership and contribution payments.
