What does a sewing machine operator do?
A sewing machine operator sews cut fabric into parts of garments, bags, shoes or other textile products on an industrial sewing machine. Each operator usually handles one step on the production line, such as collars or overlocking, and works to an hourly or daily output target. Operators also check their own seams, report machine problems and keep the work area tidy.
- Sew cut fabric into garment, bag or shoe parts on an industrial sewing machine.
- Handle one step on the production line, such as collars, sleeves or overlocking.
- Meet hourly or daily output targets to the quality standard.
- Check your own seams and redo any that are not neat.
- Change needles and thread and report machine problems.
- Keep the work area clean and safe.
What do you need to become a sewing machine operator?
Sewing machine operator vacancies in Indonesia are usually open to SMP, SMA or SMK graduates, and selection almost always includes a practical sewing test. Experience on industrial machines helps, but many ads accept beginners. Ads for this job rarely ask for certificates. A competency certificate from a professional certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP can still prove your skills when you change jobs.
How does factory sewing differ from home-based tailoring?
Factory sewing operators handle one step on a garment line, work rotating shifts and chase hourly targets. Boutique tailors and small garment workshops usually make whole garments, sometimes made to measure, and often pay per piece. There is also piecework taken home. For piecework, ask for a written note of the rate per piece, the quantity and the payment date, and never pay a deposit for a machine or materials.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- Junior or senior secondary education (SMP, SMA or SMK), depending on the factory.
- Able to operate an industrial sewing machine, usually shown in a practical test.
- Careful and able to work to daily targets.
- Willing to work rotating shifts and overtime within the rules.
- Garment factory experience is a plus, but many ads accept beginners.

How much do garment workers earn in Indonesia?
Factory sewing machine operators may not be paid below the minimum wage of the regency or city where the factory is, at least those with less than one year of service (PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24). We do not show a figure for garment or workshop sewing yet because there is no verified vacancy data with a large enough sample or an official pay scale. Advertised figures rarely state the sample size, so always compare them with the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) where you work.

Which training routes lead to sewing machine operator jobs?
The fastest routes into sewing machine operator work are an SMK fashion track or a sewing course at a vocational training centre. Kemnaker's National Vocational Training Programme on Skillhub is free, lasts one to four months and is open to Indonesian citizens aged 17 or older with an SMA or SMK diploma and a SIAPkerja account. A garment apparel track is on its list. A competency test with a BNSP-licensed LSP adds proof of your skills.
- BLK and BPVP: free government job training in Indonesia and how to register on Skillhub
- Vocational high school (SMK) in Indonesia: route to work, certificates and job centres

- LPK training institutes in Indonesia: choosing a licensed one and spotting warning signs
- Language tests for working abroad: JFT-Basic, JLPT, EPS-TOPIK, IELTS, OET and telc
Can a sewing machine operator work abroad legally?
Yes, through official routes. Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (Tokutei Ginou) visa covers industrial product manufacturing, including a sewing category, with a JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 Japanese test and a skills test for the field. South Korea recruits factory workers through its Employment Permit System (EPS), and Indonesia is one of its sending countries. Singapore does not list Indonesia as a source country for manufacturing Work Permits.
What contracts, shifts and social security apply to sewing machine operators?
Sewing machine operators are often hired on a fixed-term PKWT contract. Under Government Regulation 35/2021, a PKWT cannot include probation, and overtime is capped at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week. Employers must register workers with BPJS (Law 24/2011, Article 15). Employers who have women work between 23.00 and 07.00 must provide nutritious food and keep them safe (Law 13/2003, Article 76). A new labour law is being finalised.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What is the career path for a sewing machine operator?
Operators who master many steps can become multi-skilled operators, then team leaders or line supervisors. Other paths include quality control, sample or pattern making, and production planning (PPIC) in garment factories. A competency certificate from a certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP helps prove your skills when you change jobs. Some experienced operators work abroad through official routes or open their own sewing business.
How do you check a sewing machine operator vacancy before applying?
- Look up the factory's official website and confirm the same vacancy appears there or on Kemnaker's Karirhub.
- Check the company's full legal name on AHU through the service below. Do not rely on a business identification number (NIB) printed in an ad, because we found no public NIB search on OSS.
- Make sure the practical test and interview take place at the factory address, not at a house, cafe or roadside.
- Refuse any request for money, your original diploma or bank details before you sign an employment agreement.
- For overseas offers, check the placement agency against the official P3MI list.
- Keep the ad and messages, then check the ad with the job checker or report it through an official channel.

What interview questions might you be asked for sewing machine operator jobs?
Interview questions for sewing machine operator jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.
Questions for this field
Which machines, equipment or engineering software have you operated?
Why they ask: The company wants to know how quickly you can work safely on its line or site.
How to answer: Name the machines or tools, how long you used them, the basic maintenance you did and any certificate you actually hold.
How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?
Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.
How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.
What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?
Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.
How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.
How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?
Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.
How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.
Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?
Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.
How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.

Which job scams target sewing machine operator applicants?
Garment factory applicants should watch for requests for money to get hired, whether from brokers, people claiming inside connections or placement agents. Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees, and a factory that recruits directly bears its own recruitment costs. Also watch for demands to hand over your original diploma, which a May 2025 Manpower Ministry circular prohibits.

Where can you find safe sewing machine operator vacancies?
Look for sewing machine operator vacancies on official channels: factory careers pages, Kemnaker's Karirhub portal, school and training-centre job centres (BKK) and official job fairs. Under Ministerial Regulation 18/2024, BKKs, licensed job portals and job fair organisers may not charge job seekers. Go to the factory's registered address, not a house or cafe. Frequently asked questions
Can a garment factory job application involve fees?
Not from a placement agency. Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees, except for certain positions set by regulation, and bars job portals and school job centres from charging at all. When a factory recruits directly, it bears the placement cost. If anyone asks for money to get you hired, stop, keep the evidence and report it.
Can a factory hold my original diploma?
No. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 prohibits employers from requiring or holding workers' diplomas and personal documents as a work guarantee. The only exception is when the employer pays for your education or training, under a written employment agreement with a guarantee to keep the documents safe. Offer a certified copy if asked, not the original.
Is there free government sewing training?
Yes. Kemnaker's National Vocational Training Programme, registered through Skillhub, is free and includes a garment apparel track. It is open to Indonesian citizens aged 17 or older with an SMA or SMK diploma and a SIAPkerja account. Courses last one to four months depending on the programme. Register only through the official Skillhub site, never through someone who asks for payment.
How can I get a sewing job in Japan without being scammed?
Use an official route. Under Law 18/2017, Article 30(1), Indonesian migrant workers may not be charged placement costs. Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 says the employer bears placement costs, and you may only be charged costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement. Any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag. Check the agency on SISKOP2MI.
Is a home sewing job that asks for a deposit a scam?
Treat it as suspicious. The Ministry of Manpower says a request for money during recruitment is almost certainly a scam. A genuine piecework client pays you per piece after the work is done, and does not ask you to pay a deposit for a machine, materials or registration first. Ask for a written agreement on rates and quantities, and never transfer money to a recruiter's personal account.
