One table to choose a route into work: SMK, D3, BLK/BPVP, LPK, BNSP certification and S1, with length, entry requirements, provider type and who it suits.
Summary
- The table compares school, college, training and certification routes by length, provider, entry requirement and who each route suits.

- BPS publishes no separate wage figure for graduates of BLK training centres, LPK institutes or holders of BNSP certificates.
- Under Law 12/2012, a D4 graduate is an applied bachelor (sarjana terapan) on the vocational track, while S1 is an academic bachelor's programme.

How do these education and training routes compare?
This table compares 6 routes by length, who usually funds the provider, entry requirement, the BPS average wage of employees with that education, and how many careers on KarirAman ask for it.

What do these figures mean?
The BPS figure is the mean, not the median, monthly net wage of employees whose highest education matches the route (Sakernas, May 2026). It describes all employees with that education: it is not the result of choosing this route and not a promised wage. The difference is worked out against the national average of IDR 3,388,976 from the same survey.
Who is this comparison of education routes for?
This comparison is for school leavers and graduates looking for a first job or a new one, and for junior high school leavers and parents choosing a route. KarirAman is a free career portal for finding work safely in Indonesia: role guides, official minimum wages, legal routes to work abroad and a fake-job checker. The table above puts vocational school (SMK), the D3 diploma, government training centres (BLK or BPVP), private training institutes (LPK), BNSP certification and the S1 degree side by side, so you can compare length, entry requirements and the careers that ask for each.
How do I read the education comparison table?
Each row is one route, and its name links to the full guide. The length and entry requirement columns come from that route's guide. The provider column shows whether the route is usually run by the government (public), privately, or both, without any fee figures. The wage column uses the BPS Sakernas average wage of employees by highest education, with the difference from the national average computed from the same survey. The careers column counts KarirAman career guides that list the route. The Best for column is an editorial judgement.
Should you choose a D3 diploma or a bachelor's degree?
There is no single answer for everyone. First compare the length and entry requirement columns in the table, then look at the career you want: some careers ask for an S1 or a professional programme after S1, some accept a D3 or SMK, and some care more about a competence certificate. The career list in each route's guide shows which route is asked for. The BPS wage figures describe all employees with that education, not the result of choosing that route.
What is the difference between a government BLK and a private LPK?
A BLK or BPVP is a government vocational training centre, while an LPK is a training institute usually run privately; that is what the provider column shows. Entry requirements, course length and how to register differ, and the details are in the guides to government training centres and private training institutes. For an LPK, check its licence before paying anything, especially if it promises a job or an internship abroad.
Where does BNSP certification fit compared with schools and training?
BNSP certification is not a school or a course but recognition of competence through a competence test. Under Government Regulation 10/2018, work-competence certification means issuing certificates through competence tests based on national competence standards (SKKNI), international standards or special standards, carried out by professional certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP. So certification can come after or alongside SMK, a D3, BLK training or an LPK course, depending on the scheme you choose.
Where does the table's data come from, and what are its limits?
The length, provider, entry requirement and Best for columns come from each route's guide, which cites its official sources. The wage figures come from the latest BPS Sakernas round recorded in KarirAman's data, and the differences are calculated automatically. Limits: the BPS figure is a mean, not a median; BPS groups D4, S1, S2 and S3 together; BLK, LPK and BNSP certification have no separate figures; and the careers count includes only guides already published on KarirAman.
How do I choose the right route?
Start from the job you want, not from the route. Open that career's guide on KarirAman and look at its education section, then come back to the table above to compare length, entry requirements and provider. If cost is a barrier, check scholarships and fee support in scholarships and the Panduan Warga KIP Kuliah guide guide. For work abroad, the legal routes are compared in compare legal routes to work abroad.

Frequently asked questions
Why are tuition and training fees not in the table?
Fees differ for every school, college and training provider, and KarirAman does not publish a figure it cannot stand behind for all of them. The table only shows whether the provider is usually public or private. Ask each provider for its official fees, and for university check support such as KIP Kuliah on its official portal.
Will D3 and S1 graduates earn the BPS figure in the table?
No. The BPS figure is the average wage of all employees whose highest education is at that level, including people who have worked for years. It is not a starting salary, not the result of choosing that route and not a promise. Your pay depends on the job, the region and your employment contract, with the minimum wage as the floor.
Is a D4 diploma equal to an S1 bachelor's degree?
Law 12/2012 on Higher Education calls D4 graduates applied bachelors (sarjana terapan) on the vocational track (Articles 16 and 21), while S1 is the bachelor's programme on the academic track (Article 18). Both are bachelor-level programmes on different tracks. Whether a vacancy or selection accepts a D4 for an S1 requirement is decided by its rules or the employer, so read the requirements carefully.
